Photography thread - for Schoob

10,796 659 July 8, 2010 at 11:18 AM
Schoob asked for people to post their photography in a thread.

I'm not a pro, but I take some good photos and I have a sincere passion for photography. Soon, I hope to learn more and take some great photos.

Since Schoob wants to see a thread about photography, here are some good ones that I took of Luray Caverns last weekend.

As you can imagine, it's tough to get good photos in a cave, but this is my favorite view of Dream Lake inside the caverns:

Here's the formation that I think looks like a little resting sherpa carrying his pack. Or, if you look at the back of the formation, it kind of looks like Vlad Dracul.

This is my favorite picture that I took of the Wishing Well:

Here's one of the ceiling of one of the caves:

And one of some contrasting stone:

Thumbup Very nice. I really like the black and white shots of the kids and the color/shading of the flowers. How on Earth did you get that pelican to stand still for the pic? Stick Out Tongue Where did you capture the pic of the Rhino?

OK experts, answer me this. What's the best method of photographing a bright moon (full or near full) surrounded by clouds? If the exposure is two long, the moon and surrounding clouds get blown out, too short and it makes it look like a cloudless sky.

Yeah, but the moon's blown out. Works for that picture though.

Your exposures look pretty good, the fountain pics are a little under exposed but not bad. The bigger issue I think is the variability of the focus. This could also be blur from a lower shutter speed. I suggest using a tripod so you can keep the camera very still.

Remember the rule of thirds and that you should in general keep your horizons straight.

take two pictures: one where the clouds are showing nicely, then one where you get the moon like you want it. take them with a tripod and don't move the camera between shots, making sure there are no clouds overlapping the moon.

using photoshop/gimp, put the one with the nice moon on the base layer. create a new layer and put the nice clouds pic on top of the other layer. use the eraser tool to erase the top layer where the moon is and maybe around it if the glare shows obviously. might have to work in some custom gradients to make it look somewhat natural. in the end, you get the top layer of the clouds with the nice-looking moon from the bottom layer.

note: i have never done this myself (my wife does the image processing), but i believe this is how she does it.
