Wasps (if they are true wasps and depending on what type of wasp) are creatures of habit. Everyday around 2:00 PM and then again at 4:00 PM they go back home. It is easy to locate their nest based upon this. Once you find the nest you will need to watch it to find the holes. If you decide to kill them yourself..you can use a window screen to put over the holes so when they come out they can't get you.

You can tell what kind of wasp or yellow jacket (which is different then a wasp) it is by the markings on it's back. Typically nest will be huge this time of year. I am not sure where you live and if you have a winter. If you do have a winter and you don't get to killing the bees, they will die off after 3 consecutive nights of 32 degrees or below. Only a few will fly away to overwinter (hibernate) to become queens next summer.

Do not bother to try and plug up the hole without killing them. They will find another way out. They are smart little creatures.

If you do decide to kill them do so after dusk when they will be in their nest and you will get em all. Do not shine a flash light into or on the hole. They will respond aggressively. If you need to use a flash light, use a red light or put red cellophane over the light. Why red, because wasps cannot see the color red.
Cold Um yeah, I think I'll let DH deal with them. Or they can freeze, I am afraid winter will be here to soon. We get them in the yard every year but usually they are not this bad and I don't ever remember them in the grass before. The nests are those honeycomb balls and usually they stay under the rain gutters or other high places around and DH sprays them with Raid Wasp at night. The neighbors call them yellow jackets so that may be what they are.

I'm sad about your veggies, I hope you get some good ones. When I went to get starts I had waited to long and not one would produce before it freezes here. I've been living through your garden adventures.

I got some herbs instead and they were doing ok but there is a freaky tiny bug that covers the plant in spiderweb stuff and is killing them. I have the hotspot for a minute so I need to google some stuff, like WTH are these bugs and how to kill them. I am pissed!

Those bugs must have come off the herbs I bought and they are killing them but they also completely covered a mini rosebush that I have had since the FTD Valentines Chocolate fiasco and the bugs encased every leaf in one long weekend we were gone and killed every single leaf on it!

I was sure it was dead but I washed the bugs off and kept watering it now there are a whole bun:h of brand new tiny leaves starting to bloom all over it again nod I just need to find out how to keep those little spider web bugs away.

Huh, Heidi's came really fast -- just a few days. I think I'd check up on it.

Stop talking about fall. After fall -- a very short fall here -- comes winter... snow, ice, freezing temps for months on end. I am not looking forward to it. Although, I don't know why I really care, it's not like I do anything anyway. Other than haul out the snow blower and shoot snow all over.
Short fall here too, hopefully we move sooner than later. I don't want it to snow.

So I just experienced my first earthquake and hope to never experience one again! I have to say it was a little exciting, but only because I was in my van. If I had been at home, it would have totally freaked me out. People on FB are saying it was strong enough to rattle dishes and rock computers and that sort of thing. 5.8 magnitude. Crazy!!!
I was sleeping when one hit where I live. It sounded like a freight train and my bed was bounced a few feet. It cracked the house, the damage was mostly cosmetic. Glad you are safe, crazy!

Faint

internet fixed.
network re-established.
staples qs and info printed.
dinner prepared.
dishes done. twice.
garbage pulled out of trash pail. need someone to take it out. i'll get lots of complaining for that.
and a host of other to-dos checked off.
finished fighting with Bank of America.
now there's a company I have really grown to dislike because of how they cheat their banking customers. charge me an arm and a leg - fine. i'll make the decision whether i want to do business with you.
but, come up to me smiling and then pull a sleight of hand? now that gets me REALLY angry.

now to tackle the rest of my to-do list for today:

list new in box printer on craigslist
finish photographing things for ebay
send out job apps
prepare the stack of papers for medical reimbursals from insurance
send out job apps

Faint

i just want to crawl under the covers and say goodnight.

You may be looking for the wasps/yellow jackets in the wrong spot. A few summers ago I had a ton of them in my backyard and couldn't figure out where they were coming from. I just happened to be repositioning some landscape blocks around my a/c unit and uncovered this very hard shelled thing that sort of looked like a football. It was, I think, a yellow-jacket nest. Anyway, as soon as I moved the landscape block there were a gazillion of these things exiting the shell and I was almost frozen with fear but quickly just dropped the stone and ran! I got a can of Ortho or some other wasp/yellow jacket spray and sprayed it in the evening - from about 100 feet away (I exaggerate Smilie) while wearing a motorcycle helmet, gloves and winter boots - along with snow pants and a heavy winter coat to protect myself! What a site!! Anyway, once they were dead I dug out the nest and threw it in the trash, They never came back. Ewww... i have the heebie jeebies now!!!

Ugh, GG sounds like you had quite a day! I hear ya on the internet issues...we have a lovely provider here in town and they are our ONLY option for internet to my knowledge....ours was out from about 10:30 or so PM until 7:30ish AM the 2nd or 3rd night we were here and then went out again for a little bit later in the day Mad Sooooo frustrating when you've been working all day then get on to pay bills or whatever and it's not working!

Enlightening info. on the wasps/bees. We have some sort of nest/colony.....empire? laugh out loud under our front porch and I bet dh has killed 40 or so of these things already....he really went after them BIG time after one stung my completely innocent dd who wasn't doing a THING to aggravate the thing. Problem seems to be better today at least, we'll see.

Can't remember where I left off on the whole move/house thing but our shower was leaking (inside the wall) and our home warranty does cover that...so the plumber was scheduled to come and then we find out that the washing machine pipes are also leaking....at least we only had to pay one service call fee for both problems Roll Eyes (Sarcastic) BUT I now have a significant HOLE in my kitchen wall where they had to access the shower...last moron who'd lived here had put a nail/screw straight through the copper pipe shake head Luckily beyond some of the fixes and the quirky things about the house we pretty much love it here and are settling in nicely. Tonight new neighbors stopped by with fresh veggies from their garden. Yesterday we bought a dishwasher and it should be installed by tomorrow Yahoo! We've not had one as long as we've been married. Between this house being double the finished sq. ft. and getting a dishwasher we feel like we're living like royalty Roll

Baby & JJ aren't lactose intolerant. Milk/Soy Protein intolerant. Their little guts can't handle the protein in either. Which reminds me, Culturelle is B1G1 @ Wags this week!

I blame it on sleep deprivation. Hide Apparently I am so tired that posts just run together!

Toad-ily bookmarked that. Nacks!
Quite understandable! No worries! I actually hadn't recalled anyone mentioning the basement, so that's why I was totally confused. laugh out loud

Morning to all my (friendly or mostly so) creatures! Gotta go brew me some coffee.

TM4D, so happy for you guys! And yay on the dishwasher!!!

I'm going to try to hit up T today, along with maybe a drugstore or two. I have the kids, though, so we'll see how successful I am. I got so spoiled last week shopping without them!

Hope everyone has a lovely almost-Friday. Big Grin

TM4D, eek no dishwasher? J/K Glad you were able to get the leaks fixed quickly.

Meeshe, congrats on the new house!

I feel like I was somehow transported back to the West Coast this week. 2 earthquakes in 2 days, thankfully nothing severe. Just enough to knock bottles off shelves. Dh looked up the epicenter, which is about 30ish miles from our house, on Google maps. There are 3 farmhouses about 500 yards from the epicenter. Wouldn't want to live there because both earthquakes and the aftershocks originated within the same small area.
