Flugette, Setsail, L2SM, glad you are all ok! Flug, why in the world did they send everyone to the basement? Having lived in SoCal, that's the last place I'd want to be. Evacuate is best bet then 2nd is in a doorway preferably one with a nice strong header.

L2B, we pay for Mini's books as well even though she's just in HS. I've learned to get her books used off Amazon. We were paying $400-$500 in books and they weren't even all new when we went through the school bookstore. I've had great luck with sellers with super fast shipping.

Some dairy got into my diet. I'm suspecting it was the AF ham we had for dinner last night. Poor No-ey has green dipes and streaks of blood too. Frown Hopefully it will leave my system soon as I don't have a big build up of dairy. Poor lil dude!
Poor little guy!

And thanks for thinking of us! hug I lived outside San Francisco for a while growing up, and dh and I lived near Seattle for 8 years so earthquakes (SMALL ones) aren't that big a deal. The kids, however freaked out a little. I wasn't home, the youngest and I were out on errands. My oldest ran outside to the sidewalk until the house stopped shaking. She's a smart cookie though we teased her about leaving her 12 year old sister behind- her response was, survival of the fittest. LMAO

Yeah, with homeschooling for years, I have had to buy all of my kids books too. I have been very fortunate with getting used books from the bay lots of times.
This time, it just snuck up last minute. I thought she was supposed to get a book allowance from the state in the dual enrollment program, so I was wai ting for that. I checked around, but only 1 book was available from amazon. Sadly, 2 of the books were institutional specific.. The science book alone was 160.00. But, it is a brand new edition and hopefully we will be able to sell it back!

Yeah, we rented one of her English books.. sadly, the other 3 weren't rentable this semester..

oh well, it is done now. Hopefully we will sell some back and get some money back at the end of the semester!
Sometimes I wish we lived in a state that paid for courses since we aren't utilizing the public schools, least they could, but then other times I think, eh it's less they can stick their noses in our curriculum. I've bought used books off eBay and also done a book swap with a large local homeschooling group.

Dillard's having an additional 30% off today of permanently reduced merchandise. Was hoping for a Coach Bag but alas someone came in yesterday and bought all Coach that was 30% and 50% off. I guess she was afraid someone else would get one! Ranting It's almost my birthday and I wanted one.........:
Well poo on them! Do you live near a Coach outlet? There is a coupon for additional 30% off (again). Last time I was there, they had a fair amount of stock that was regular retail store items, not just the items that were made specifically for the outlet.
Quote from flugette :
:scratchingmyhead: They didn't go to the basement. They were sent outside. Hubby was far more shook up than I thought he would be. His building is huge and solid (think industrial/military) and during the quake, the floors were actually shaking and rattling. Buildings out here and in DC are not built to withstand earthquakes, and many of the ones in DC are super old. Well, *American* super old, not *European* super old. Wink Anyway, here's hoping that's the one and only for the next 100 years!
Dh's office is a trailer right next to the air strip on a military base. He said the first thing they thought was that there was an unexpected cargo plane landing. Did you feel the second quake last night at around 1 am? A friend of mine's dh works with the USGS in a monitoring project, if anyone wants to go through the link below to answer a few questions. Gives them an idea of how and where quakes were felt. Click on the number for the quake you want to reply to, and then look on the right side of middle of the next screen for "did you feel it".

Quote from getgreen09 :

interesting morning here.

and by interesting i mean, Ranting

1. internet goes out while I am in the middle of sending out an email message. lose the whole long important business message.
2. try to call comcast. the phone is out. great.
3. go to use cell - battery is dead because a member of the tribe conveniently took away my charging cord after destroying theirs (apparently telling someone every single day that they're going to destroy their cord - if they keep the phone plugged in to the wall and then pull it on to the bed - is all annoying nagging stuff, until of course the cord falls apart and then it's an aha moment).
4. find the destroyed cord and physically hold it for 30 mins to get a charge on the phone and call comcast.
5. they get me to power cycle the router, and then power cycle the modem and despite my protestations, make me RESET BOTH. i lose my whole network Faint but still get no internet connection Head Bang
6. they inform me there appears to be an outage and it'll be a few hours. great.
7. try to print a bunch of stuff sitting in the printer queue for pressing errands. figured i'll go take care of those as will other members of the clan. guess what? yeah, i lost my network so computer can't talk to printer.
8. spend 45 mins. recreate the whole network. does nothing. modem reset means it's all wiped out and sans a home internet connection i can't download the new firmware into the router, or put in all the settings. so, no printing. which means all the work that was planned for today is now on hold.

are we having fun yet? cos this gets better.

9. i'm sitting on the desk chair trying to enter the network info into the printer and i nearly fall off. huh? check why - someone here has been rocking the chair, so that the screws on the metal plate under the seat have come loose. they almost fell out in my hand. can't get under the chair in current injured state, so this will have to wait till later in the day for someone else to fix. result - desk chair out of commission.

10. go to fix the printer stuff and a careless clan member has left out a tub of this highly fragranced stuff that gives me major migraines. no idea it was there until i started to smell it and next thing you know - bam! migraine #7

11. darling pcp called in an rx for imitrex while on vacay. pharmacist calls me to say it's not going through on blue cross. um what? my insurance number has changed - they didn't send me the new card yet but canceled the old one. how fantabulous.

and it's not even 10:30 am yet. somebody please give me a barrel of vodka and a neanderthal club to knock myself out senseless. Bonk

did the earthquake just scramble everyone's minds?
Don't you love how they first want you to cycle the modem endlessly before they admit it's an outage? I think there should be a direct to tier 3 tech support for cable companies so I don't have to listen to "did you cycle your modem" endlessly. It's the first thing I try, at least once, before calling them.

Doggies are all good. Heidi needs a pawdicure and is being uncooperative. I need a treat feeder. The little sh1t... I sit down on the floor and as soon as she sees me pick up the rotary tool she runs over, plops down, and puts her paw on my leg. Then she lets me get one little buzz on the nail before she yanks it back and stares at the treat bag. I assure you , it takes more than one little buzz to grind/trim her nails. Apparently, she just likes to taunt me... and I still fall for it. Now, if I convince one of these people to sit there and feed her treats, she's good as gold. Roll Eyes (Sarcastic) The chihuahua's nails are done. Like she has a choice....laugh out loud

I have a question about selling online and safe payment. I told you I have recently sold or am selling a car assuming all goes as planned. Now, we are meeting this guy at an airport so he can return his rental, he is paying cash and driving away in the car. All fine and dandy.

But, I have had another inquiry about the car. I think it's a scam for a couple other reasons but it still makes me ask how to do something like this safely. This guy says he will send payment via wire transfer or Paypal and have the car pick up and shipped. That isn't all that nutty because we are talking about a 40 year old collectable car and sometimes shipping one can be as cheap if not cheaper than traveling cross country to buy it and drive it.

No way would I do wire transfer because I've heard the horror stories, which I find weird because that used to be the safest way to send money. In fact, my daughter is buying a house (if the damn thing ever closes) and that is the required payment method.

But, I digress.... So, let's just say I was convinced the guy is legit and wants this vehicle shipped -- buyer arranges and pays for transport. What would be a safe method of securing payment? Shoot, even Craigslist warns you about bogus cashier's checks. We've eliminated wire transfer. Paypal... I don't think so, I think it's pretty easy to get that reversed, isn't it? So, what? What about a U.S. Post Office money order? Just curious.

Once the stove and car are gone, I have my eye on a small boat and older motor and an antique boat motor (it runs) next... to sell, not to buy. Poor DH, I followed him into the bathroom last night quizzing him on price. Hmmmm I wonder what his antique railroad crap is worth....laugh out loud

Setsail, nope, I didn't feel the aftershock this morning/last night. Slept like a baby, both me and dh.

I am delaying my departure this morning - I so don't want to wrangle the kids all through the store, but I do need to get some things for dinner. Guess I might as well just get it over with!!

GT, I think I would probably take the cash in hand from the buyer that is close by but if you are considering the other buyer's offer, I would accept Western Union. Money orders, even postal money orders, have been counterfeited as well, plus I think there is a $1000 max value on USPS money orders.

Tentatively it's supposed to skim the coast though we'll definitely get a lot of rain. Saturday morning should be a good time to use confusion as our cover. woot

Oh yeah, internet. I was gonna rant about that too. I have Mediacom and have actually been quite happy with them for seven years. Now my rates have skyrocketed and they simply refuse to offer existing customers any kind of deal at all.

We have family cable -- with one HD/digital box. We do have starz/encore simply because it was part of the last package and was cheaper with it than without (I can drop this now and save three whole dollars) We also have internet and phone.

Phone is $30 month with the other stuff. I have no problem with that. No long distance charges, all the calling options, blah blah blah. And phone wouldn't stop me from dropping it. I would go with Straight Talk for either $30 or $45/month.

Phone is $30
Internet is now $46
Cable is now $80

Problem is, we have no other internet provider other than possibly dial up and I would rather have no internet than slow internet. I could drop cable but then it would be $61 for just internet or $85 for internet and phone. And then I would have to get dish or direct tv too since my husband refuses to give up television. I could shut it off and be fine with that. Over the air with an antenna is not an option here.

Oh, after seven years they did offer me one thing. To cut the bill to $129 month for one year, with a two year contract. We have never, ever had a contract. And let me tell ya, those sale/customer retention people aren't very nice.

As long as all goes as planned, we have a buyer who is coming from across the country to buy the car -- with cash. We are meeting him at the airport so he can return his rental car. I was just curious about safe selling option for future reference.

Shopping should be fun! bounce

It's from the Southern Living Busy Moms Weeknight favorites cookbook. Awesome cookbook, they have pics for every recipe.

Baked Apple French Toast

2 12 oz packages of frozen, cooked apples (I am using Stouffer's Harvest Apples, searched high and low and finally found them at Kroger)
1/2 16 oz loaf French bread
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
4 large eggs
1 1/3 cups milk
1 tsp vanilla extract

Garnish with whipped topping and ground cinnamon

1. Preheat oven to 350. Thaw apples in microwave at Medium/50% power for 6 minutes. Cut bread into 6 equal slices.

2. Stir together apples and brown sugar. Spoon into lightly greased 13 x 9 greased baking dish.

3. Wisk together eggs, milk, and vanilla. Place bread slices, 1 at a time, in egg mixture, and let stand 1 minute. Turn bread slice over and let stand 1 more minute. Place bread slices in a even layer on top of apple mixture.

4. Bake, uncovered, at 350 for 35 to 40 minutes or until bread centers are firm. Garnish and serve.

Reviews are really good, so I can't wait to try it!

My husband is a mean, mean man. First of all, we haven't been doing any fishing. We went for our week trip to Minnesota and haven't fished here at all. Heck, I don't even have an Iowa license this year.

He just called to tell me that the kid working with him went to this pond last night. A pond we have fished in the past and caught nothing but 2" long babies. It's half mile or so hike down in there. We quit fishing it. So, he called to tell me he caught nice, big bluegill - lots of them and a couple decent bass. LAST NIGHT.

I am seriously consider a trip to town for a license... I really think Heidi would like to go hiking and fishing.

Population 1000 in the whole town Smilie

Marion was popuplation 20,000+ and then you had CR right on the border with a much larger population even. This is heaven. Soooo quiet and barely any cars going by in the street. Plenty of kids but not too many either. It could not be better as far as that goes.

Well....we ARE right by a quarry. And my husband failed to tell me that they "blast" at the quarry Roll Eyes (Sarcastic) You should have seen the drama that ensued here when they did that a couple days ago laugh out loud DD and I both thought the house was gonna cave in on us; after all was said and done it was quite hilarious and dh was not here at the time and missed it all.

Mediacom is notorious. My mom took pretty much that same deal with the contract not too long ago and I can't figure out why. Our Qwest (they just became CenturyLink) down here was awesome, reliable, cheap service....no phone line required and about $35/mo. and now they have a deal going where you can get it for $20/mo. for 5 yrs. OMG And of course she can't switch because she's in the contract now.

Now here we pay $42 just for the base DSL and then we are required to have a phone line because it is a Co-Op so that is another $20....for something we likely won't use. ALTHOUGH....we did order a phone that should connect to both of our cell phones so you can make and take calls through the landline that are coming through with your cell if that makes sense. At least we will actually use what we are paying for and my cell battery tends to drain quickly anyway so this should help that problem too. My dh built an antenna that worked awesome at our old house to pick up the local digital channels but it is only picking up one here so he is going to have to do some modifying and mounting of the antenna so we can hopefully get a bit better reception. I really don't want to have to get cable but at least I think basic is only like $35. We'll see. The whole internet thing is definitely not one of the perks but I do think it's at least a bit faster than what we had before.

Well we ended up getting the second house that we placed an offer and on and go to closing Sept 2nd... thud... but we won't be moving til right around Christmas time. So much to do... I already started going through lots of our stuff.. need to do it early before my school starts again.. cause I am in school until Dec. 23rd. OMG!! errr lol

Nikayla-- When are you moving? Have they ever heard anything more about your renter? HUGS!!

GT-- how are the doggies doing?

GG- Hope your night ended up alot smoother than your morning!! HUGS!!
hey! DH has some things to finalize here so anytime between 2 months to a year. Also depends if/when we find a perfect house.

Still haven't heard anything about missing renter Steve. They did mention him in the news again a few days ago while talking about a missing woman from the area Susan Powell.

TM4D, your house sounds wonderful, glad ur getting all settled in.

GT, we have a 'buyer' for our boat that wants to pay the exact same way and use a shipping service. I don't think there is any safe way of selling like that except cash only. Which they will not do. They were relentless emailing me for awhile but finally stopped. I think I sent them 10 messages cash only that they responded to with other payment options.

Dpags, freaky yellow jacket story!! I wonder where the heck the nest is. I am sure there is more than one.
