hey there everybody! i'm back! went to a bbq on saturday that a college friend arranged after a friend of a friend passed away from breast cancer earlier this year and we were all feeling the need to make more effort to see each other more often.

since his lakehouse was less than an hour and a half from our god-daughter who we hadn't seen in 2 yrs, we headed up there afterwards to stay for a few days. she wanted to go to the renaissance fair but it ended up raining (again) on sunday so we went to the farmers market and then watched movies and had takeout pizza and pasta for dinner. we will try to meet up for the fair next month when we find out her dad's work schedule.

monday we went to a really cool historic state park that is a converted railroad bridge over the river. beautiful views that must be gorgeous during fall foliage. checked out the new plaza at the cooking institute. they have very interesting planters of veggies mixed w/ flowers. too bad the bakery didn't have much left. mexican for dinner. way too many chips and salsa.

tues we went to the cty fair. very nice day, could have been a little cooler, very crowded. watched the pig races, watched a cow end up having an assisted birth. they reached in and attached chains around each front hoof and then 2 guys yanked on the handles. still wasn't coming out so another guy attached a rope to the middle the chain while a 4th guy stuck his hand in and lubed up what he could reach. calf finally came out w/ a lot of pulling when they got one knee in front of the other.

checked out the specialty foods and vendor exhibits while gd and her brother went on the rides. bought a bottle of pickled cantaloupe to try. got on that ferris wheel w/ the cages that spin around w/ gd b/c her brother was too short and her mom didn't want to go and dh doesn't like rides. had to wait in the most uncomfortable position w/ the car facing down and all our weight pressing our stomaches into the lapbar while 2 sets of riders could not get on the ride b/c the lapbar could not go down all the way and lock the cage. then we had to wait in the astronaut on the launchpad position but no neck and head support while other people got on the ride. b/c i am heavier than my 12yr old gd, the car had a tendency to settle sideways and spin when the ferris wheel was spinning first backwards, then forwards. good thing i'm ok on most rides except the ones that feel like your stomache is falling. as long as there is momentum and no free-falling sensation, i'm good. haven't really gone on any serious rides in yrs b/c of dh. afterwards gd said that was the worst ride ever Teehee! glad i can still hack it. then we had expensive japanese. i think i'll just wait until next wk to get on the scale. Wink

yesterday after breakfast we climbed the hill in the park behind their house and enjoyed another beautiful view that must be magnificent in the fall. headed out but stopped to do some grocery shopping on the way home. picked up some beautiful organic peaches for only 1.99/lb at the korean supermarket. the ones at the supermarket haven't been looking good so i haven't bought them. gg- if you have an Hmart in your area, you should go check it out. it wasn't as cheap as i thought but the quality was good.

We have gotten way too much rain!

Hugs!

I will be glad when summer is over!! I'm tired. Hope everyone is doing well.
i'd swear i saw mushrooms the size of dinner plates on one of the neighbor's lawns on our way out on saturday. rain and thunder again this morning. last wk i welcomed the rain but why is it so loud and violent and thunderstorming practically every day? so unnatural.

i'm sad summer is almost over! i like it sunny and hot! it's getting too cool at night for me!

Yeah, with homeschooling for years, I have had to buy all of my kids books too. I have been very fortunate with getting used books from the bay lots of times.
This time, it just snuck up last minute. I thought she was supposed to get a book allowance from the state in the dual enrollment program, so I was wai ting for that. I checked around, but only 1 book was available from amazon. Sadly, 2 of the books were institutional specific.. The science book alone was 160.00. But, it is a brand new edition and hopefully we will be able to sell it back!

Yeah, we rented one of her English books.. sadly, the other 3 weren't rentable this semester..

oh well, it is done now. Hopefully we will sell some back and get some money back at the end of the semester!
after the first year of college i learned to sell my books to students taking the course the semester after me. i would buy the books new at the bookstore, keep them very neat and clean and then sell them for 2/3's of the original price, undercutting the university bookstore. the bookstore would only pay 1/4 the original price and sell them for 3/4, so it was a win-win for everyone. i would get most of my money back and the buyer got cheaper books in great condition.

Stop talking about fall. After fall -- a very short fall here -- comes winter... snow, ice, freezing temps for months on end. I am not looking forward to it. Although, I don't know why I really care, it's not like I do anything anyway. Other than haul out the snow blower and shoot snow all over.
i'm not looking forward to it either. Frown

As long as all goes as planned, we have a buyer who is coming from across the country to buy the car -- with cash. We are meeting him at the airport so he can return his rental car. I was just curious about safe selling option for future reference.
get a counterfeit bill pen. i know some of the garage sale people use it.

Well....we ARE right by a quarry. And my husband failed to tell me that they "blast" at the quarry Roll Eyes (Sarcastic) You should have seen the drama that ensued here when they did that a couple days ago laugh out loud DD and I both thought the house was gonna cave in on us; after all was said and done it was quite hilarious and dh was not here at the time and missed it all.
i live by a quarry too! yeah the house quivers when they blast. not so sure i would have noticed an earthquake.....at least at first. the handyman was wondering why our roof was double beamed. tues we were outside at the county fair so didn't notice anything.

in 1987 i was staying at my roommate's house for spring break in beverly hills (on the wrong side of wilshire blvd) when there was a 4.0 earthquake off the coast of malibu. at first i thought it was the subway b/c my dorm building would shake, even on the 16th fl every time the N and R train would go by. but then i realized i was in CA and there are no subways (at least back then). friend's mom got us into a doorway while the newscasters on tv ducked under the desk. the only thing that really happened was the dining room chandelier swayed back and forth.

exactly 20 yrs later to the month, i was in San Jose staying at my cousin's apt and there was another earthquake.

i happened to be awake in bed (probably reading) one yr when there was a minor earthquake in nyc in the middle of the night many yrs ago. it felt like all of a sudden the bed dropped out from under me. i even went to the basement to see if there was something wrong w/ the furnace. didn't find out about the earthquake until the next day.

I just got back from a local grocery store and they had a peelies I hadn't seen before, on shrinkwrapped 5 packs of macncheese save $2 on one package of kool-aid jammers when u buy this kraftmacncheese5pk.

43000 81682 seems like a good coupon to me!

They were on a endcap set up to display in cases and across from the bakery and the bakery dude was totally staring at me, especially every time I passed the display. I need to go back and get me a few more Wink

They still haven't set up the rice dream milk display that they had last yr with the $3.50 peelies. I keep checking.

Ok, gotta tell ya my story. I mentioned earlier my husband was mean and called and told me about the kid catching fish last night. In the pond where I swore I would never go back. The walk is hard -- about a half mile up and down two steep hills. The pond is usually yucky and all I drag in is weeds and slime.

Wellll, I couldn't resist the lure... pun intended. I ran to HyVee and got a license and trekked my fat arse up and down the hills.

Ya know I take Heidi to a little lake between here and town all the time. She doesn't swim. She loves the water and charges right in but does not swim. When it starts going over her back, she won't go out any further. I don't know why.

She was having a ball running up and down the hills. We got to the pond and she went charging right in the water as usual. I looked over at her and she was swimming. Out and out swimming. And she swam and swam and swam nonstop for probably half an hour. Under the dock, out and around, back under the dock, over and over. Only problem was, now that she is swimming she would swim out and fetch my bobber back to me. Yeah, the one I was fishing with!

No, I didn't catch a damn thing.

Mediacom is notorious. My mom took pretty much that same deal with the contract not too long ago and I can't figure out why..... And of course she can't switch because she's in the contract now.

ALTHOUGH....we did order a phone that should connect to both of our cell phones so you can make and take calls through the landline that are coming through with your cell if that makes sense.
I looked your little town up. It's a regular metropolis! My town is about 550 - 600. BOOM! Are ya gettin' twitchy yet?

Your mom can cancel with penalty of two hundred and some dollars -- that decreases by $30 every 3 months, I think is what he told me. What ticked me off was that if we move to an area where Mediacom is not an option you still have to pay it. Not planning on moving but ya never know. I love the small area but hate not having options for things like that. It's Mediacom or no one.

Yeah, the phone makes sense to me. I did a product test for one, two actually. I would never have considered going all cellular until recently. First, up here the cell plans suck and reception was bad until a new tower went up last year. But now there is the unlimited Straight Talk for $45/month. Second, cell phones go dead. A lot. But I have two sets of those now --- you talk on a house phone - with multiple handsets -- but you are using the cell phone plan. No home line required. I tested it using my daughter's cell and it worked really well. Just leave the cell on the charger and use a house phone as usual.

When my kids were little the town we were in was ~356. A man that we knew very stopped and was talking to our son from his vehicle. My friend/neighbor didn't know him and didn't recognize the car. In less than a minute I knew some man was talking to my kids and I had a vehicle description complete with license and the kids never left her sight. Yeah, there are advantages.

Wave

Hope everyone is warm & dry! Smilie

Had a nice run today at a new store. Literally in the middle of the parking lot w/ a cart FULL of stuff--torrential downpour. I ran to my car, opened the hatchback and tried to huddle underneath with all my stuff, but the rain was coming in sideways and soaking my interior. Thought about running back to the store but instead opened the door and just threw everything in the back. Thankfully, I had the car to myself! Had to go back inside to BUY towels because I was wet like I had just walked out of the shower. Got back to the car and saw that my mascara was running down my face. Thanks a lot Physicians Formula! Thumbup

Question: Have any of your kids wanted to be the same character/thing for Halloween 2 years in a row? I know we still have 2 months, but it's been 10 and DS still wants to be the Cat in the Hat again. I just asked him again tonight before bed. He is still so obsessed with Dr. Seuss. Plus side is we have a great costume already that fits him and I could make little modifications on it and we are in a different location this year, so no one has seen him wear it. I guess I am the one that's disappointed--I was looking forward to doing something new.

But, I have had another inquiry about the car. I think it's a scam for a couple other reasons but it still makes me ask how to do something like this safely. This guy says he will send payment via wire transfer or Paypal and have the car pick up and shipped. That isn't all that nutty because we are talking about a 40 year old collectable car and sometimes shipping one can be as cheap if not cheaper than traveling cross country to buy it and drive it.

But, I digress.... So, let's just say I was convinced the guy is legit and wants this vehicle shipped -- buyer arranges and pays for transport. What would be a safe method of securing payment? Shoot, even Craigslist warns you about bogus cashier's checks. We've eliminated wire transfer. Paypal... I don't think so, I think it's pretty easy to get that reversed, isn't it? So, what? What about a U.S. Post Office money order? Just curious.
A DEFINATE SCAM! They work both ways - they try to sell you cars claiming they will ship them to you and they try to buy your car and do all sorts of crazy crap with the money. No car is worth shipping unless it's a rare or super luxury vehicle and these are not typically sold through CL, but more typically through car enthusiast channels. Never, ever ship a car or purchase a car to be shipped to you, from EB or CL!

Hi.

I need about 27 more hours in a day. And some coffee.

We've been super busy with just kids and house stuff. *sigh* I have barely shopped, adn only then for absolute essentials. I have no idea what to make for breakfast/lunch tomorrow - and really no desire to cook right now. *sigh*

Anyway, overall things are great - just hectic with no real sign of slowing down.

Hope all is well with you ladies and gentlemen.

Cold hard cash is the only way to accept money on CL! I don't remember if I posted here about this but my BIL sold some car audio equipment on CL at least 4-5 years ago and the person paid w/ bogus USPS money orders. At the time I think it was a common way to scam payments. BIL deposited the money orders and withdrew the money. It took a couple of weeks but the money orders bounced and the bank came after him. He had to pay it all back and penalties. To this day, he still can't get a bank account in his name. It has wrecked a lot of stuff for him financially.

I would agree with Dpags and say this is definitely a scam. You should suggest that he find a local representative for himself in your area to tender the cash on his behalf.

You know, I totally thought Cole would want to be an elephant again this year. I was almost excited about the idea of not having to buy a new costume. But when I asked him the other day he told me Captain Hook. I have no idea where that came from, but we'll roll with it. Baby cakes is going as Tinkerbell. Smilie

I'm not selling the car to him and I didn't list it on Craigslist. I am selling it to a man who is coming here to get it and paying cash. Well, almost here. We are meeting him where he can return his rental car. I live in the middle of nowhere and the closest national car rental place is an hour away at a small, regional air port.

I did, however, list my Jenn-Air on Craigslist and there is someone coming Sunday for it. Well, I guess they might get here and not like it but, they must be fairly sure since they are coming from quite a ways away.

Gator, my kids have wanted to be the same thing a few yrs in a row. I was relieved not to have to get new costume, we just switched it up a bit. From bad witch to good witch or was it good to bad? Hmmm...

Ank, sending super mom vibes so you can get everything done and shop too. But don't forget the delegating, that usually helps a lot.
