Setsail, is this the Taurus X??? If so the more I hear you talk about that thing (assuming you were the one that told me your dh had one laugh out loud) the more I am glad we didn't go w/the Freestyle. Though we see a TON of them around here.

I am still loving my Mazda5 BTW. Loving that it's a van but smaller. Got 24.4 mpg on the last tank of gas, 23 on the tank before that and I would guess we are about 25% highway 75% stop 'n go driving. That's a lot better than what my old Caravan was getting and EPA ratings for it are 19 city, 24 highway so I couldn't be more pleased since my #1 thing was wanting something more fuel efficient but not as small as a car laugh out loud

The one and the same! That's why I said I was cautious about the model. I know one vehicle doesn't make the example for the entire line, and it's not like I'm a Ford hater, out of 5 Fords that we've had in 20 years, 2 I would recommend to people. The others? Not so much. I'm just cautious anymore about buying one of their vehicles.

(winners- 1991 Ford Mustang, no problems with it. 1998 Windstar- transmission was replaced at 35,000 miles and power steering replaced at 60,000 and 108,000 but otherwise a reliable car. losers- 2003 Windstar, 89 Taurus sedan, 08 Taurus X)

Knock on wood, so far no problems with my 08 Odyssey other than a recall for a computer adjustment for the transmission. In the first 3 years of ownership, my 03 Ford van had 3 recalls, and died on the way to the dealership at 62,000 miles. When it's time for another car, we're looking at the Mercedes/ Dodge Sprinter. Diesel so it gets 24 mpg in the city EEK! and is as big as an Econoline van (which, with 4 tall kids, would be nice to have the extra space). Dh will get an econobox of some kind. laugh out loud

Stick Out Tongue Me too! Sometimes I wish I had power sliding doors but then eh, it was discounted well below msrp because few people wanted a van without that power option. I love the amount of room, both in the seating area and in the hatch area. We can fit enough luggage for a 4 day trip, for 6 people, plus bring back shopping goodies. Wink

I have the power sliding doors and I wish I had the power back door thing. We bought ours previously owned Honda certified. DH bought a lottery ticket one week and asked me what my dream car would be if we won. I told him I'd take the new Odyssey with all the bells and whistles. I WISH they'd release one in a hybrid. Then I'd really be in heart.

I know it looks a little funky on the outside but that Mercedes van, especially with reconfigured seats, plus the better fuel economy... yep I think that's my dream car. laugh out loud Dh's dream is a convertible of some kind. both me and dh are from queens and my parents, db (the one i've spoken to you about) and sil (that all you guys know about Teehee) are still there. in-laws are now in SI and we are in central nj.

the new flushing target is in between citifield and my parents' house so that's how i ended up going there a couple times, once was around the time we were buying all the cheap crayola and art supplies b4 easter. we refuse to pay for parking (and obviously so does everyone else) so dh would drop me off for a little bit and wait out front so i've never had time to do more than browse. normally we would go to the college point target cuz we go to restaurants in northern queens. i have been to the queens center target a few times over the yrs w/ sil but i never get my own shopping done when i'm w/ her. although this past sunday i was able to buy 8packs of mm schick disposables, 2 free flashlights and 2 tennis racket bug zappers at superwalmart cuz she didn't have much to buy so i got to go off on my own.

so of course we go to queens for my family's family occasions. since dh's grandparents live in senior housing in the city, and his parents are in SI, for his family we tend to meet in the city for family occasions. of course sil would prefer we go to queens but traffic and now parking has gotten so bad over the yrs that we try to avoid that as much as possible. and we would have to drive both grandparents and in-laws home while sil would already be home. when we meet in the city we pick up grandparents and then sil drives them home and we drive in-laws home. much more equitable for everyone and less resentment on our part.

when we first moved it would take 1hr 10 minutes to sil's house and 1hr 20 minutes to my parent's house. now it takes min 2hrs to my parents's house. we used to park at my parents house, buy food at main st and take the subway or walk to the game. nowadays we always park in sil's neighborhood (used to buy subway sandwiches to eat at shea) near where we used to live across the street from her b/c you can't find parking closer by the subway anymore and take the subway to the game. it's a tradition to get a snack at white castle whenever we are there. we also have a favorite japanese restaurant, ariyoshi, on queens blvd if we do end up eating there.

nowadays i'm in the city about once a month, sometimes more. i'm in queens about every month may-sept and then every 2-3 months the rest of the yr. i also used to go into the city for sample sales once or twice a wk nov-dec but they've been pretty horrible for the last couple yrs so i haven't been going. it costs me 13.80 just for the bus when bff is working. when she wasn't working it cost 20.00 plus 4.00 parking. then you have to buy food and drink and sometimes pay for subway but luckily most of the sample sales are w/in walking distance of port authority. after a couple times coming home empty-handed, it was not worth it. sometimes i get lucky and warehouse sales happen to be on the way to the city when we happen to be going.

i think it was in jan 1999 we were in a ford aerostar and the transmission died on the freeway in northern california a few miles from the car rental. in-laws have an old ford taurus piece of crap that started falling apart when they got it.

some things just don't change.

Ford transmissions are known to give out early and often. I know of 3 people personally (what are the statistical chances?) who had their transmissions die on the highway in fords. All cars were under 30K. one had 12,000 miles!

I'm big on buying American made goods on most everything EXCEPT cars. We do a really bad job with our cars these days, in my humble opinion.

Dear friend of mine has the Mercedes van. With 4 kids it's perfect for em. I've driven it. It's great. Great trunk and folding seats make for lots of cargo room. Only thing is, it's BIG. or atleast the model they have (don't know which year) is big. which means, she has a hard time parallel parking it even with the parking guide! laugh out loud

Same here, I know quite a few people that had Ford transmissions that went out. For the longest time, Ford kept using the same sucky AXOD (AXO4? Something like that) transmission, it was a piece o'junk that they had a not so secret extended warranty on, it was listed under recall databases but they (Ford) didn't like to talk about it. And the transmission would cause engine problems. main seal and other issues.

There is another mom, that I see at my son's weekly speech class, that drives the Mercedes. It is huge, definitely taller, maybe a smidge wider, and about 20 inches longer than the Honda. Not having to hear, "mom she touched me!!!", might be worth it. laugh out loud I worry about parking, not having trouble with it because after 14 years of driving a minivan, I can parallel park and back into parking spaces like a champ, but fitting the longer wheel length into parking lots. Guess I'll have to take up two spaces. Embarrassment

Morning, everyone! Wave

Love hearing all the talk about NYC. I've been there several times, always love the time spent there. I used to live in a huge city, and so its almost like coming home. Not that I would care to live again in a city, but its nice to visit. laugh out loud

Headed out this morning to use 2 DSW gift cards. New shoes!!! Big Grin Nothing too exciting, though - I desperately need shoes for regular everyday wear. Flip flops, while my favorite form of footwear, do not keep the feet warm in 50 degree weather.

you would think companies would learn not to use known crappy parts. i wonder how many college case studies have been written about maytag, an old iconic american company that had a sterling reputation and a marketing image recognized by most of the population that was put out of business by using a cheap lock on just one of their many, many products.

and it's funny how these days bankrupt companies don't die anymore. maytag, linens 'n things, sharper image and circuit city have been magically resurrected.

ss- you could do like some people and park a little further away or you can park like everyone else, w/ their giant pickups w/ extended cabs, yukon denalis, and even commercial vehicles, wherever you find a space you can fit. about 80% of the time i have to guess where my little subaru forrester is in the parking lot b/c i can't see it b/c it's hidden by some minivan or truck.

st, I usually park in the back edges of parking lots anyways because it peeves me greatly when people nick my car with their doors. My favorite spots are usually near the farthest back cart return at T, I park along one side so that I know at least one side of the car is protected from idiots. They are probably the same idiots that can't seem to back their teeny car out of a parking space. lol

setsail - I park the same way. One side of my car is the cart return and the other side is a pole light with a large concrete base that keeps another car from getting very close.

how about the idiot who put his shopping cart behind my car to unload it and i hit it? the cart was lower than the back window and headrests so i couldn't even see it and it's metallic and the interior of my car is grey. and then he had the audacity to say what if there had been a human being in the cart? wtf??? how stupid can you be? it's not like i was sneaking around the parking lot in broad daylight and all of a sudden pulled out. he didn't notice somebody was in the car getting ready to leave? his grown-up daughter was smart and kept her mouth shut. he was the one who was wrong and should have apologized instead of getting mad. i could have hit him instead of the cart where he had no business being.

it's always better to park far away from a**holes and idiots except when it's raining.
