Well, technically dh said you don't need to do a back up of a back up. He said back up once a month and then put the external drive away.

To find out how much drive space the file takes up, easiest way I know how is to go to the start menu, scroll to the file name, right click and then select properties. Under the general tab, it will show how much data is in the file. (info taken from Windows Vista, 7, etc but should apply in most Windows based pcs)
i think this is the way to go. i kept reading in that staples thread about how the 2T doesn't have a fan and it will cook and could get a cheap fan at target to blow on it. which is what i think happened to the last 2. they just stop working after awhile. and dh is totally oblivious to the weird noises, constant running, etc.

had dh look and we currently have less than 50 gb. laugh out loud so 1T or 2T is totally overkill but even 500gb is kinda rare on the market unless it's portable but then you pay extra for the portability. so i'm kinda lost and dh is not helping at all.

If it were me, I would buy the 1T drive, yes it's overkill but you can use it to back-up computers and more. With less than 50gb of pictures, I would also burn them to a DVD as a just in case. Orrrr, get a SSD drive, because it has a much lower rate of failure than the average hard drive.

last yr i bought 200 dvds on bogo sale at costco to back up our pics (you see how little i know) and of course dh didn't do a thing so they just sit there.

i just don't understand his attitude. 2 yrs ago he took 400 pictures just between st louis and kansas city. he seems not to care if we lose everything. which we almost did b4 when we had the 1st hard drive we had b/c he hadn't backed stuff up for 6 months.

ST -- I don't think guys care as much about pictures as women do. I couldn't find the pictures from when my daughter was born and my stomach felt ill. Luckily I found the CD's. I had forgotten I had burned them off to disk.

Off to my grandma's house. Since she lives in the nursing home now we are cleaning out the house. Trying to get the attic emptied before it gets hot out. It's a small house, but it sure is packed full of stuff.
Unfortunately I have to bring my girls with me and they are fighting like cats and dogs. ugh

How is your knee doing? I had one a few years ago but not that bad, still have problems with it, hoping my DD doesn't. So good so far.
I'm just now starting to go down stairs with the knee. I can go up with it, but I feel like a speed bump (ie, too slow) for most folks, so I just take the elevator up, unless it's the back stairs. I've lost 32 lbs since the knee surgery, so that helps as well.

Applause You can stretch that $40 T GC into more than $100 easily by shopping smart... but you already know that.

I can go up and down stairs but just can't walk as fast as I used to, at times it bothers me. I need to loose weight, that would probably help. I need to find a walking partner, makes it more enjoyable.nod

I agree, I don't think guys care as much either. Long ago, I learned to de-select the "delete from card" option when downloading pictures. My camera was having issues and pictures didn't transfer correctly. I lost most of 2003, including my now 9 year old son's first birthday pictures. It still makes me sick to my stomach to think about it.

hug hope you were able to get some work done today.

funny story this evening.

was at the supermarket checking out in the 20 item express lane w/ 13 items and noticed 2 of my 4-.75 nut thins ip's did not double. was in the midst of bringing it to the attention of the cashier when the customer behind me in her 50's or 60's started having a cow and said *i will pay you to get out of here. how much is it? 30 cents?* me- it's $1.50. she pulls out $1.50 from her wallet and hands it to me so i swipe my credit card and push off.

hey, if you cannot even wait a few minutes for the supervisor to fix the problem, then fine, i will take your money. it probably would have taken 3-5 minutes so the $1.50 cost her the equivalent of $18-30/hr.

but then she starts calling out, *this is an express lane. you're welcome!* obviously still wasn't happy.shake head maybe b/c it was 5X more than she thought it would be and now was unhappy about how much it had actually cost her. Teehee so i answered back - *it's not my fault the computer didn't do it right. this is the 20 item express lane, i had 13 items. there are 2 other express lanes (6 and 12 items max, she had like 5-6). she still calls out- *have a nice life!* what's her problem? Confused

i just went to the entrance and stopped there to check over my receipt and then left.

after thinking about it while getting dinner on the table i came up w/ a snappy comeback, after the fact, as usual. i should have gone back and told the lady, *obviously $1.50 was too much money to pay me to cash out. instead of being happy, you are still mad. so take it back. and next time, i would wait and find out exactly what the situation is b4 you open your mouth.*

paid by a complete stranger.

Applause ST for being that much of a pain in the ass to this woman (not a lady) that you got paid to get out of the way.

Wink5 do a correction on your receipt the next time you are in the store (to collect your $1.50 the store owes you).

i hadn't even finished showing the cashier the problem when she offered to give me money and pulled out her wallet. i didn't even have the chance to be a pain in the ass yet.

i thought about going to cs and getting my money and donating her money to the food pantry along w/ the 25 boxes of mp mac n cheese, 18 beechnut fruit-to-go and 3 boxes of mashed potatoes i'm taking on monday. but they would have to pull the coupons from the cashier's coupon bag and it was getting late and still needed to go home and eat dinner. so i decided time is money, and i got my money. time to go home. and this shoprite will only do coupon adjustments the same day so it was either do it or not do it.

Rather than let some asshat like that pay you (even though that's a nice enough punishment) it would be more fun, and traumatizing to her, to say "You'll just have to wait for the supervisor to sort it out, just as I would do if it was someone in front of me having the same problem." Make her wait and kill her with sugary sweet kindness that is (obviously) not sincere.

...and if that's not enough...

Maybe her blood pressure would skyrocket even further, she'd have some sort of heart attack, and you could save her with CPR and become a hero. Target would be so thrilled they'd reward you with unlimited gift cards! We can dream...

Cathi, I'm sorry for your loss.
Ha! You definitely need a night out, thrift! I agree with paying your daughter in gift cards or swag or whatever. Big Grin

One time, I had a guy behind me at Safeway holler, "Hey, just pay full price like the rest of us!!" Rofl2
