Q: Will this automatically renew?
A: NO!
Quote :
The automatic renewal provisions in the Amazon Prime Terms & Conditions (which would require you to pay for Amazon Prime) do not apply to this membership, even if we decide to extend the free Amazon Prime offer beyond one year.
Q: Can I get this if I'm not a student (even if I have a .edu e-mail address)?
A: You might be able to. And you might not.
If you do not qualify and they catch you, Amazon will make you reimburse them for their costs
Quote :
If you do not provide documentation indicating that you meet the eligibility requirements above, you may be required to reimburse us for benefits you received as a result of your Amazon Student membership.
*I am not the arbiter of morality, but please don't abuse this by signing up if you do not meet Amazon's requirements*

Q: What happens if I already have a prime account?
A: I'm not sure, however people are reporting that if they currently have a prime account and they sign-up for the Amazon Student account, the following happens:
1. Their current prime account gets cancelled and they get a pro-rated refund
2. They get signed up for the free 1 year amazon student prime

Q: My .edu address isn't my Amazon.com address -- do I have to create a new account?
A: No
Quote :
If your .edu e-mail address isn't listed on your Amazon.com account, that's OK. The only e-mail we'll send to your .edu e-mail address is the verification e-mail. After that, other Amazon Student e-mails will be sent to the e-mail address listed on your Amazon.com account.
Q: Ohh my gosh, this is amazing, how can I thank you!?!?!
A: Students are notoriously poor. Many have to work minimum-wage jobs while taking classes to pay for rent, tuition and food. Let a student know about this deal and help them save money. Also, donating old books you have lying around the house to schools and libraries (especially those dealing with budget cuts) could potentially enrich a child's life and help them get interested in many different subjects and put them on the path to higher education.

"Join Amazon Student and get FREE Two-Day Shipping for one year with a free Amazon Prime membership ($79 value), as well as e-mail alerts for exclusive promotions. There is no cost to join--simply sign up by providing your school and major. If youre not a student, you may still be eligible for a free trial of Amazon Prime."

EDIT: This is really crazy!! Almost 2750 thumbs ups and counting! -- Over 3900 reps (I started with only 17!) Thanks everyone for all the support!

Here's the back story of how this deal came about: My sister-in-law really wanted a prime account since their's had just ended a short time go. She kept asking if I wanted to split one with her and my other siblings, but the rest of us weren't so keen on the idea because we didn't have that much of a need for it.

Fast forward to yesterday afternoon, she calls me and tells me about this Amazon Student thing and asks if I've ever heard of it. I told her no and did a search on slickdeals and google and couldn't find a thing on it. I went to the website she gave me and saw that you get Prime free for a year if you're a student, etc. etc. I verified it worked and that you could add family members to the account.

As soon as that happened, I posted it here since I've been a member for a while, but never posted a deal before (everyone is really quick on the uptake for this kind of stuff so by the time I find out about something, it's probably been on here for days already). I wanted to give back to everyone and this was the perfect opportunity.

The rest as they say, is history (1 day old history!)

That is your opinion. And mine is you are wrong. It will not bother them one bit and a lot fewer will drop then you would guess.

"Membership dates: March 22, 2011 - March 22, 2012"

it will soon come to an end Frown

but then again, when I look back over the year that has gone and how many orders I have placed under the $25 for FS, I have only saved maybe $30 of the $40 priced membership... so not worth it unless I need to get stuff faster, and I never do

I have a knack for predicting things. Believe me when I tell you that ALOT of people will NOT renew their membership after their Prime ends. Your average Amazon customer probably does not order a lot, and will definitely not pay $40 to use this service.

A lot of people will refuse to pay for something that every other major company on the internet provides for free. Amazon needs to understand that only a select few will pay $40 when one can get the same Costco membership for the same price. Amazon will backtrack on this and provide this service for free (which is what it should be)
Curious if you have any business background because you are so off on this.

I buy online as much as everyone and really have to wait until shipping promos or special sales to get free shopping at other sites. Amazon is consistently cheaper and have quick shipping not to mention easy returns. I can buy $5 items and get 2 day shipping unlike other sites.

I really don't know where you are getting better deals but good for you.

i just checked my Amazon account that I did not do the re-sign up trick a while ago and my prime membership expiration date is on June 21, 2012! On the other hand, the other account (that I mostly use) and did the re-sign up trick on, had it's expiration date changed to the 28th of February.

Like others, I got 2 years (or very close) of Student Prime and have recently renewed at the $39 rate, but would never renew at the full price. Most of my orders are over the $25 minimum, and usually not in that big of a hurry to get the items. For the handful of times that speed is of the essence or the order is less than $25 it would cheaper to pay the shipping than a full price Prime membership. Even at $39 Amazon might still come out ahead: depends on how often I use the VOD.

Funny this thread popped up. I've had free prime for a little over 3 years now. since fall of 2008 i believe. first time i signed up as a college student. that was a year or a month of free membership? I don't remember. anyway, i totally forgot about it and when it ended, they automatically renewed.

So when i took a look at my bank statement and saw the $79 charge, i got mad and contacted them telling them that's bad business practices and etc. they refunded the full amount which was great.

Later down the line, i think there was some exploit on the Amazon prime page that allowed you to renew using the same email/account. Maybe someone can confirm this. Another free year.

Then in 2011 I believe I went through the normal renewal process and got another free year. Now, in 3 days my membership will expire.

It was a nice run. Amazon saved me a ton on shipping cost, but for me it was more of being able to get the item at my door in 2 days. I'm really thinking of renewing now.

Mines looking to expire in 2 days as well after about 3 years of free prime (Membership dates: March 10, 2009 - February 28, 2012). I'm thinking about popping on it as well for $40/year.

huh? What other online company offers what Amazon offers with Prime for free?

I gladly payed the $40 after having Prime free for two years. It is definitely worth the money for me considering how much stuff I order. I'm sure many others have done the same.

1) amazon prime is not just about free 2 day shipping
2) even if it were, it would still be free 2 day shipping. not many other sites offer this.

throwaway seems to be trolling, imo. saying something like "oh i have a good knack for this, so just trust my opinion" is not enough to sell me.

the fact is that millions of people own kindle fires right now. they sold 5.5 million units in Q4 2011.. i haven't found data for Q1 of this year, but i wouldn't be surprised if there are 10 million people with kindle fires. that just means prime accounts and renewals will likely rise.

if you are really serious about what you say throwaway, stop being so ignorant. just because you don't care for the features that come with prime, it doesn't mean that others wouldn't. it's one thing to say that the product is not for you, and it's another thing to say that it's not everyone else because you don't like it.

Agreed. He is way off. Buying online is just so much more convenient than going to the store, and nowadays you can often find many items actually cheaper online. Even if I can get some items cheaper in store, I still sometimes choose to order online after factoring in gas, tax, and convenience.

I've been a prime member from July 4, 2008 - February 29, 2012 and i've become way too accustomed to free 2 day shipping. A lot of the time, 2 day ends up being 1 day thanks to Amazon's awesome fulfillment procedures. I'm hoping something pops up between now and Wednesday but if not, I will be renewing for $39. I can't shop online without Prime.

I have Costco membership and I have Prime (free one). I am debating which one to keep, once Prime membership expires. And frankly, I see myself spending $40 and getting whatever crappy video streaming and free 2 days shipping with Prime, as compared to Costco. On the other hand, I pay $110 for Costco executive membership, but I get cash back check from Costco at the end of the year for the same amount anyways. I also have Netflix. But with $40 prime, I am still spending half than Netflix. But on the other hand, Amazon can't deliver milk or fresh produce or bread etc. So I might just cancel Netflix, keep Amazon for video streaming and Costco for other shopping choices. And Costco membership turns out to be free anyways for me.
For some people Prime with Streaming might be a better choice, for some, Costco and Netflix (or other steaming services).
  • Streaming selection really sucks
  • 12 free kindle books (must have a kindle)
  • Amazon has terrible pricing on food staples compared to local pricing/sales

Prime isn't that great of a deal. In its current state, $20 is the max I would pay and it is reported amazon may not be breaking even at $80.
