Has anyone dealt with Staples rewards Theft??

205 28 July 17, 2010 at 12:02 PM in Question
Ok, so I have been turning in ink cartridges to staples for a while now, and have received rewards since February I believe, and I have never been able to use them except one. I usually waited til the last day before they expired and then they wouldnt work when using them online or in store they wouldnt work, so i just figured i missed my chance, and would try again next month (i know, not the smartest approach, but thats a different issue).

Anyway, since I kept having non-stop problems with my rewards, I just logged onto my account to check my status on rewards.. Well apparently, EVERY single one of my rewards was redeemed in New York by somebody buying external hard drives both times. One was in Staten Island and the other in Selden... The problem here is that I am from Indiana, and have never been to New York in my life.. Now I dont know if 'New York' shows up if you buy online, or if someone guessed my rewards account number, because I keep my computer clean and scan it constantly for everything, and have never posted any information anywhere.. I cant call the rewards people til Monday to figure this out.. Do you think they will credit me with any of these rewards, or am I screwed?

So has anyone else had this happen, or did i win the unlucky lottery again? lol

I called. The account was created 2/16/2012 and a $50 purchase was made in MA. Forgot to ask the date. There is this $40 apparently for June(that doesn't make sense) and another $40 for the month of May that is still outstanding. These are ink recycling. I went online to try to create an acct., but of course one already exists. Maybe this weirdo looks for vacant property or those that are for sale and uses those addresses. idk

I'd check with JAXXBOSS.

I got my July rewards in the mail (the ones that were just issued that included double ink recycling). I don't know why I got them in the mail....... they 're on line as well. Maybe someone stole your mailed reward???????
Not familiar with double ink rewards and I always obtain/print my vouchers via email. Nothing ever mailed. When the cashier stated, "this was used on-line previously" I knew immediately it was associated with the scammers. It has been many months since I regularly checked the number of ink reward vouchers listed on eBay, but there was some NY joker who always had 50 to 75 available.

Have to wonder what took Staples soooo long to shut this rewards theft scam down. Not to mention the bogus $25 off $75 coupons that were available a few years ago. I picked up a few of those and had no reason to believe they weren't legit when the stores didn't hesitate to accept them. You could go in with two $30 ink reward vouchers and a $25 off $75 and clean up. Those with multiple accounts, and within a 20 mile radius of 3 or 4 stores, could really go bargain shopping.

Can anyone guesstimate the amount Staples has been scammed for due to the number generators.

No one had their rewards stolen after Staples implemented a new system?

I just wanna accumulate my rewards and not have to worry about them being stolen.

Good question. Since turning in odd numbers of inks before they implemented the new system I've not had my rewards stolen and have stocked them up to five rewards with premier. I won't risk it till it's pretty solid that rewards are safe now. The $2 lost isn't much for peace of mind.

Well, since you "found" it, you should be able to "use/keep" it.

Does anyone have any insight as to recent changes at Staples. A store is closing in the suburbs of Chicago, six months after the office max closed, in a thriving area. In addition, other stores are changing their hours to 9-7, that is unbelievable for a retailer!

It is part of their strategy to save $250 million/yr and return $1 billion to shareholders in the form of buybacks and dividends this fiscal year.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-09-25/staples-to-shut-60-stores-in-plan-to-save-250-million.html

This is obviously in preparation for a buy-out by a private equity firm soon. Such firms are known to be vultures who have slash and burn economics that only benefit their pockets.

I haven't done Staples rewards for a few years because last time I did them, my rewards were stolen. I'm concerened if I turn in toner cartridges, they might get stolen again. Since I don't have a staples real close to me and would have to drive 9 miles away to find one, I was wondered if they ever fixed their system to make it more secure. I don't want to go to all this trouble only to have my rewards stolen.

thanks for any advice.

It was fixed in May 2012. Your reward number is no longer in your 16 digit voucher number. They randomize the 16 code now every month for every account. No reported thefts of rewards since they started that anyone has reported.

thanks - I really appreciate the information - especially since I have about 600 empty toner cartridges. Smilie I've been doing Office max and Office Depot and would really love to get back into Staples. Smilie Smilie Smilie
