My hubby is a techie guy and would have all the latest gadgets if we could afford them. I balk at technology, and especially when it takes away from good ol' personal interaction. That's why I have not gotten my kids any of the handheld systems, even though they're old enough now. Its partly a money thing, but I also wonder how wise it is to get them addicted to gaming at such a young age. The one tech purchase I've made for them was the Tag reader, and I am SO glad I did that. That helped my son so much in figuring out how to read. He can now read books by himself, and he's only 5.

Anyway, I guess I'm old school - give kids a book, toys, Legos, trains, whatever, but make their imagination work. Help their brain grow. Don't park them in front of a TV/iPod/computer/DSi/whatever and let them go comatose. laugh out loud

I'm thinking about giving in a little and getting my son one of the systems, either the Leapster (or whatever the current one is called Roll Eyes (Sarcastic) ) or the DS, for Christmas. Of course, he is only 5 and not very responsible with things, so I haven't decided if that's a good idea or not. Big Grin

Hope everyone is having a fabulous Monday!!

I guess I'll go Hide as I have no TV that has ANY inputs besides a cable input (I have a plan to remedy that), no DVD, no TiVo, a cell phone that only calls and texts (I haven't mastered that), no Ipod, no MP3 player, no laptop, no iPad.

Even though I'm well paid, I've never understood spending the money all on myself. I did buy myself a La-Z-Boy sofa last year for Christmas, and gas logs for the house 3 years ago.
I'm very generous to the Brother and SIL though (and their 8 kids).
I guess to a certain extent I am like you... I personally do not own an Ipod, mp3, ipad, fancy cell phone or any of that.. I do buy it for my kids and dh tho... I tend to be very cheap on myself... I feel like if I can give to others I am happier... I think its great that you help out your brother and his family, very sweet!! Does your brother live near you? HUGS!!

Okay, so I need some advice. My son is fixing to be 7 and wants an iPod for christmas. I am the most iPod challenged human on this earth. I don't think he's mature/responsible enough for anything touch screen, but I also don't want to get him something that's going to quit working. I saw the little nano ones for like 50 bucks but they are reeeeally small and easy for him to lose.

So gimme the low-down on what's good and what's not.
I have one of the Creative Zen 1G MP3 players from the Napster FB giveaway that is still in the package. I know it is not an ipod, but just say the word and it is yours! You have done so much to help me. hug

I like a lot of Zen products, especially for a youngin'. Easy drag and drop interface should make your life easier.

I love my phone but have no interest in owning an ipod or mp3 player of any kind. I find the Tivo service to be more annoying than anything else (because dh and my older ds constantly think they have to pause every single stupid show to walk 10 ft to the kitchen to get a drink).

Like cathi wrote, we all have our own interests. Wouldn't life be boring if everyone were the same? Big Grin
What is your phone? I use to have a Data phone but don't now. Just a plain old phone. I do miss Internet access though. I am on Verizon, previously Alltel. Use to have a cheap unlimited Data plan but Verizon changed all that. Sucks.

Checked 12 pack Cokes at T and they are $4.99. Won't be using the MQ that DS7 posted there. Anyone need the Coke Q?

I have/had an iPhone until AT&T cancelled my service for "excessive data use". It was seriously the biggest waste of money for me- I never, ever talk to people on the phone. So now I can use my iPhone on the wifi here at home and have a cheapo Tracfone for calls (and at maybe 5 mins talking a month, it's a deal! lol)

W.T.F.
I had that pop up yesterday, downloaded Avast! (free anti-virus software that actually works), since it said the same thing "Windows Security Tool", but guess what, I don't have Windows laugh out loud I'm on Linux/Umbuntu

OMG Mine just turned 7 this month and I'm positive he has no clue what an I-Pod is. Though his grandma has one of those new I-Pad or Kindles or both actually and one of them has some silly touch screen slide game. Kind of like the old hard plastic games with the squares you slid around. I'm sure he would love whatever device had that but wouldn't have a clue what else it was good for.

Personally, I really wouldn't get it for him. Both because I also doubt he is old enough but also because aren't they suppose to run with head-phones? I'm not the most paranoid mother but I'd be a bit concerned about him using the head-phones. I'd worry a bit about their harm to his hearing and also the possible danger he could get into if distracted while he had them on.

Then again, if you decide to get one for your son, I'd be the first to let you know if I saw a good deal. After all it's your decision not mine. And just because this is something I might be Leary of giving my son I'm sure if you reviewed my parenting choices you would find plenty of things that would have given you pause as well.
My oldest DS is named for his dad's bff growing up. About 5 mos into the pregnancy, his bff and his friend were riding their bikes to school with headphones and tape players (showing my age a little), and they went over a little hill, and he didn't hear the car coming from the other way over the music. He died instantly.

We also had a kid last year that was walking on the railroad tracks by our house with headphones on. He didn't hear the train (though there is some debate about if it was an accident or suicide), but the official story is that it was a tragic accident.

My kids know that they NEVER wear headphones while they are out riding bikes/scooters or anything like that. They can use headphones while at home, riding in the car, or walking on the sidewalk. Never when there is not a sidewalk, while they are on the road, ect..

Oh... and did ya'll know that Alton Brown is married??

Color me confused!! Confused
I knew that, and that he had a kid. But, he did a lot of his recording for Good Eats around here, and we've watched it from the beginning. I could easily see that if you only started watching him from Iron Chef America that you could get that impression. Ever since he lost all that weight, he looks kinda that way, at least to me. Sort-of like he is "wearing an Edgar suit" (Men In Black movie reference). Like his skin is just a little too loose for his body.

Quote from dreemedayze :
Who is Alton Brown and I heard a long time ago that the guy that played Zach on Saved by The Bell died in a motorcycle accident. But I thought I saw recent pics of him. WTH?
He was on a show on TNT last year about lawyers called Raising The Bar. It was a decent show but got cancelled.

Teri, I think and hope that you'll receive good news from the doc! Smilie

As others mentioned, I have heard positive reviews of the SanDisk Sansa and Microsoft Zune players
as well and they usually cost considerably less than an iPod. Here is a recent deal with 14 TU votes
for the SanDisk Sansa Fuze 4GB MP3 Player.
I have a Sansa 2GB I just got on clearance for $23 at TRU last week. I needed a MP3 player that would play while it charges for my Halloween set-up. It's pretty nice for the money.

My kids have some Insignia 1GB MP3 players that were $20 new a few years ago (i.e. would be about $5 now). They are still going strong. Well, except my son's. I was using it for my Halloween display, stuck it in my back pocket, then did laundry Roll Eyes (Sarcastic) It may be good for washing Elmo, but not so good for MP3 players Nono He still doesn't know that I did that. I gave him an old Disney one I had from years ago. He never uses it, once in a few months, so he won't miss his other one.

I would start out with a reg. MP3 player, let the kids take care of that for a year or so, see if it's something they take care of and use, that way if they do lose it, no big deal.

BTW- saw that Halloween costumes and accessories are all 30% off now until the 30th, probably posted in deals, but I don't feel like going over there to see.

Funny, my DH has a $9.99, 100 minutes plan. This is an old Alltel plan and carried over to Verizon. He very seldom turns it on. Usually I will turn it on when he goes somewhere without me in case I need to reach him.

Lucky you! This is a nasty virus Annoyed it hijacks your computer and completely disables all anti virus software, won't allow you to download any anti virus software and you can't get rid of the thing. It keeps popping up telling you your computer is infected (duh) and to get rid of it you have to pay 79.95. By the time I had spent several hours trying to fix it I was almost ready to give the farkers the money to get my computer back. I finally had to start in safe mode so I could get online and find a program that would delete it. Avast wouldn't, Malwarebytes wouldn't and finally HitmanPro did the trick. I just wish I had known about it before it consumed by netbook Sadwalk
