Now who would think of checking slipper boxes to see if there were any earrings inside?
Though I am wondering if the slippers were returned - and the earrings were someone's Christmas present that got stuck inside.
I am a fast reader, so I think I will take your advice and wait on that series! I am starting a new list of books on my phone, so I will have that in case I forget (which I always do!).

years ago when domestic long distance wasn't included in landline phone plans, we signed up with verizon as our local call provider and AT&T as our long distance provider. ok, all good. then from the home phone we made one call - one, mind you - to germany because the prepaid calling card that offered a cheaper rate had run out. next month I get my bill and it shows a 12.95 charge from AT&T for a monthly international calling plan which supposedly gave you lower rates on calls. I rang them and said no thank you, and moreover, I never opted to sign up for this plan, and legally you cannot sign me up for any plan and then charge me for it without my consent. well, the guy gives me hard sell, and then says he can't take it off and he needs a supervisor for it. puts me on 45 min hold for a supervisor, hangs up on me. I call back, same thing again, hang up. 4 hours that day. I give up, try again another day. same thing. once one guy says to me, supervisor is busy right now he'll call you back, let me take your number (ummm, you have my telephone account open in front of you, you don't know my number??!).
they played this game with me for 5 months! and kept charging me. and I kept refusing to pay that amount. now it was about 65 bucks. Then one At&T rep says I'll offer you a deal, pay half and we'll stop it.
I paid nothing and canceled the account and told them I was going to send a complaint to the Attorney General's office. Immediately after that they stopped sending me notices for that amount. Then they sold it to a collection agency and I had to tell them the same thing and decline the amount and said I was going to report them to the AG. they too stopped and sold it to a 3rd company. On and on it went for 3 years, until it showd up on my credit report and I declined it there and said I had reported to AG. so it was removed.
I will never again do business with AT&T because of that. will not own an iphone until some other cell provider offers it. AT&T's long distance unit went bye-bye with all the changes in the phone world, as it should have. I refuse to do business with companies that cheat.

I haven't figured out if we are going to work on time today or delayed (snow last night... water on roads has frozen. Marshall (ie Nasa) is 2 hour delay, but I haven't heard about Redstone).

I just tell them to send me verification that I owe the bill. They never send it. A couple people got all snappy with me. Geez! They would snap "We already CONFIRMED this!!" "You need to pay it NOW!" One even asked if I had a lawyer. I told him I would have if they didn't stop harrassing me. I realize the only power they have is to bully me. Can't really take me to court for an 18 year old credit card bill.
An interesting point is that it actually HURTS your credit to pay an OLD bill. It is no longer on your record. Pay it - and it leaps back on your record for 7 more years. Kind of ironic, don't you think?
To be perfectly honest, I DID owe about $1,500 many years ago. My son was in the hospital for several months, I was hardly working , and there was no way I could pay it. The credit card company was actually nice though. The guy I talked to actually gave me the CHOICE to have it written off as uncollectible. But he did tell me that it would be on my credit report for seven years. In retrospect, it would have been on my credit report as a negative for longer than that if I would have paid tiny little payments late all the time...
Anyway - true to their word they never bothered me again until 18 years later.....geez...

you owe them nothing.
once it is past the 7yr period, they can do nothing. the statute of limitations is over. if they attempt to pursue you they are violating the law. moreover, if a company writes something off, they no longer can collect on it. it's one or the other. either you write something off as a loss and claim it on your taxes, or show something as a debt/receivables and carry it foward for years. you can't write it off, get the tax benefit and then get people to pay you.
so if i were you i would not get into arguments with these folk, nor explain anything to them about 18 years ago, because the statements can be used against you, as can the phone contacts. Ask them to stop calling you, tell them they are violating the law, and then ask for the person's name and let them know you will report them. end of story.

Can I get on the "I hate AT&T" bandwagon? When we moved here we got AT&T. Service was crappy. We spent more time offline than on, so after struggling with it for 5 mos, we cancelled and went back to Comcast. Got a bill the next month. Called and told 'em we had cancelled and didn't owe the bill. They said "Oh, yeah, we'll take care of it..." Did that for 5 mos when they send me a notice that THEY are cancelling my service and sending me to collections.
Morning, everyone! Today is a day of cleaning for me! Soon as I get back from taking Jaden to school, gonna get this house whipped into shape! Tired of living with junk everywhere. Plus I want to get the floors ready so hubby can steam clean them tomorrow.
And those sage pork chops sound so yummy. Definitely need to pick some up and try that.
Have fun with the cleaning... Ours isn't too bad - though the hardwood could use a good wash. I need to get some vinegar!
Today should've been DH's payday with his former employer. Before he gave his notice, he was told that all accrued vacation and personal time would be paid, in accordance with company policy and Michigan law. Did he get anything? Not a single cent. I am so pissed. All hell will break lose at 9AM.
