slowtech... organic bok choy is on sale 1.49/lb at WF this week. those things are so light, one can get quite a bit in a pound, no? what say you?
your meals sound yummy. i want to eat them.
bok choy with bellas and shrimp - in what kind of sauce? like a white sauce? (not western white sauce of course)
i want home made fried rice. with home made flavorful crunchy gingery stir fry.
and i want my mommy. Sadwalk
gg- your recovery time seems excessively long for the pain to not have lessened to some extent. maybe a second opinion? wish there was something i could do for you besides hug.

1.49 for organic bok choy isn't bad. i was looking at choy sum which is just a young version of boy choy at .99/lb but it didn't look so good so i passed. i really should have gone on sunday b/c wknds are the busiest times at asian mkts and that's when everything is freshest. on wkdays the produce usually looks rather old but there are certain things that are constantly restocked.

bok choy is typically cooked w/o sauce. the most popular is just to stir fry w/ garlic. my mil will also add very skinny threads of ginger but we don't like it and pick it out. i think she also uses white pepper. i know she uses msg which is really bad esp since she has high blood pressure. that's a whole nother story by itself. most chinese people wouldn't add the soy sauce in this recipe b/c there is probably some other dish on the table w/ soy sauce. then everything would just taste like soy sauce. in cantonese cooking you are supposed to enhance and enjoy the natural flavor of each food.
http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipe...index.html

in chinese restaurants that cater to chinese people, what you would do is ask what fresh seasonal veggie is available and then you can get usually cooked 2 ways, garlic or fu yer (fermented bean curd http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fermented_bean_curd). the softer leafy veggies like watercress, spinach, water spinach, etc people like to get w/ the fermented bean curd but i think b/c bok choy has a crunchy texture and very subtle flavor you always order w/ garlic.

at home for contrast, people will cook it w/ something like dried shitake mushrooms cut into strips if they are big, half moons or whole if they are small for a veggie dish.

you can stir fry it w/ beef and then you would add oyster sauce at the end. shrimp is ok but may be kind of bland. they don't use oyster sauce in the restaurants b/c it turns everything brownish and less attractive but everybody uses it at home. if you cook w/ shrimp i would toss w/ a little sesame oil right at the end.

or it could be part of a vegetable medley w/ broccoli, carrots, etc. then beef, chicken, shrimp or pork alone or some combo would be very nice. then some of those bottled stir fry sauces would be very nice. just watch the sodium. even oyster sauce and soy sauce is very high.

don't know why bok choy is not very popular amongst chinese right now. i took a tour at whole foods a few months ago and boy choy scores 824 out of 1000 on the andi scale so i have been going more often to the asian mkt for produce. watercress, which is one of our favorites scores 1000.

just for comparison, broccoli scores 376, napa 704 and cabbage 481.

Quote from ank220 :
Wow - I got the same except no kohlrabi (no clue what to do w/it) and no tofu!

So... what are your recipes?? Big Grin
i'll do my recipes daily as i cook them. today i think i'm going to cook bean thread noodles b/c i started soaking the shitake mushrooms yesterday, but they weren't going to be ready on time, so i used the baby bellas instead. and i defrosted the ham steak. there's a lot of prep work involved so i don't do it often. this is a homestyle dish you will never get at a restaurant. you can use chicken, pork or shrimp also. this will be a main dish w/ rice for 2 people. for more people my mom would probably steam a fish or chicken dish and then stir fry a veggie.

-4 bunches mung bean thread noodles soaked in cold water for about half hr
-shitake mushrooms rehydrated and cut into 1/4-1/3 inch strips
-half lb ham steak cut into 1/4 x 1.5-2in strips
-1-2 eggs scrambled and cooked into a thin pancake then cut into thin strips, same size as ham and mushroom
-qtr of a medium-sized napa cabbage cut into 1/3-1/2 inch strips crosswise

stir fry napa cabbage, add noodles and cook until turns clear, add ham, mushroom and egg and heat thru. add about 1-2 tablespoons soy sauce and stir thoroughly. can drizzle some sesame oil also and stir thoroughly. little white pepper if desired. you can always have some sort of hot sauce on the side or maybe a little chili oil if you want heat. you could probably add shredded carrots for more color but dh doesn't like carrots.

eta- i forgot, when you add the noodles you need to add water or chicken broth. between a qtr to half a cup.

Good morning everyone Smilie I slept in today and it felt wonderful bounce seems like I had about 3 or 4 nights with very little sleep and then worked 12 hours on Monday and was exhausted! But, I slept pretty good Monday night and last night like a rock! My toddler didn't get up until 10:00 am, and she woke up in such a sweet mood heart

Flug - no snow here.. it is just chilly and very windy.. and very wet too cause it rained all night! I think a day inside in PJs with coffee and the internet sounds nice Wink

Dia - Don't get to see you in here too often anymore, but HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! *hugs* to you.
Congrats on the good night's sleep, and your dd sleeping in, as well! That is always so nice.

I ended up giving my sisters a call (two are teachers and the third is gov't, so all 3 have the day off - actually the gov't worker sister had her boss tell her to take a mental health day due to my grandpa) and we all hung out together. And since that included a trip to Target, it was extra specially nice. Big Grin I didn't go too crazy, but I did get a lot for a little, and was very happy with it. My kids love every single chance they can hang with their aunts, so it was a happy day all around.

Now I'm at home listening to the ice falling. It was actually thundering and lightning a few minutes ago! Crazy weather. Not sure if we'll make it out for church tonight - this ice is falling fairly quickly and accumulating fast.

Your K-cup train box is out for delivery today, so maybe you can sip on a new flavor later!
I got it!! Thanks BUNCHES! Hopefully I'll be able to get the box back out, but maybe not until Fri or Sat, depending on the weather. All the flavors look yummy! Is it ok if I replace them with multiples, or just one flavor of each? Not sure of the etiquette of the K-cup train. Big Grin

gg- was thinking and remembered another good thing to cook w/ bok choy is wood ear fungus which is very good for you b/c it has anti-coagulant properties esp right now. it's an ingredient in hot and sour soup.

if you cannot find some, i will mail you some.

i will think of some other things you should be eating, besides chicken soup of course.

lots of ginger too.

Bout damn time.

I haven't done a lot today. I am so dang tired that I can barely stay awake. No idea why. Drank more coffee, pot is now empty, didn't help. I vacuumed the living room and kitchen and dusted. My new tables were delivered, so I dusted them, situated them correctly, and put them lamps back. Oh yeah, and I threw a load in the wash. I suppose I should go dry it too.

Gotta figure out some supper. Nothing sounds good. bulb There are two very thick, smoked pork chops in the fridge. It's probably going to be that, just by default.

Why is fridge spelled with a "d" but refrigerator isn't?

You should go kick their @sses for me.

Dinner is pasta and meat sauce.

Cleaning...I did a load of laundry.
I got the mop out and put it in the corner.
I contemplated washing the floor.
I looked at the mop.
The End.

Fridge has a d and refrigerator does not because the person putting words together that day did not have a Keurig!

Bunnies is a fragile vessel.

When I say that to DH, he just says uh-huh..I don't think he believes me. Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

If you are closer to North brusnwick, some of those Asian stores esp korean and chinese in RT 27 has very fresh sea food esp on weekend...

hug I can totally relate to that.. I lost my sis to AML couple of years back and everytime i think i wish this couldn't have happened to us.
She was only 23, married for less than 2 yrs and just had her most wanted baby girl for 2 months, though she had her 9/10 matched donor, her cancer cells were uncurable and in the end we had to let her sleep within 7 months..Your post moved me to tears..hug
Teehee! i went to great wall so you must know where that is. next time i go to costco i will check out hmart. a friend told us it was crazy in there a few saturdays ago.

let me know next time you are heading up this way and we can go to the asian mkt together.

would be even healthier if dh would eat brown rice at least once in awhile but i find it difficult also.

i'm sorry about your sister Comfort.

the exact translation is *wood ear*. fungus is thrown on there in english so you know what it is. it is a fungus and not a mushroom.

and you've probably eaten it if you've ever had hot and sour soup at a place that makes it properly Evil.

it's like the sobe dyed w/ bugs that .teri. won't drink. anything w/ cochineal or carmine is bug dye. you've probably eaten it but didn't know it.

now the taco bell beef. that is vomit! i like taco bell but thank goodness i only eat there once or twice a yr. only having steak or chicken from now on!!!

ok, gotta go back to RL and get some stuff done including cooking said recipe.
