How much emergency money do you keep?

8,038 649 March 25, 2011 at 07:56 PM in Question
Just wondering approximately how much cash people keep on hand in the event of an emergency…

not talking about the 20 behind your drivers liscense…

i am referring to the money burried in your sock drawer, under your mattress, in a box in the back yard etc..

they money you keep on hand for the earthquake, flood, riot, hurricane, etc…

I am refreshing my emergency supplies and just am not sure if I have enough cash on hand (yes I am making sure i have it in smaller bills so i can make change in the event others cant)

can you recommend anything that's decent and not too expensive. cuz, now that i'm thinking about it, a shotgun probably is better as you guys mentioned.
Best values will be the Mossberg 500 ($250-300) or Remington 870 ($300-350). I personally prefer the Mossberg. I have a 500 Persuader model that stays near my bed. I have a Glock 17 closer though.

Check out www.budsgunshop.com they usually have good prices. Of course, if you buy from them, you will have to have it shipped to an FFL dealer in your area. Your local dealer will probably charge you a fee for the transfer ($20-35).

12 or 20 gauge would work fine. Both shotguns are available in either. The 20 will be a little less recoil, that might be something to consider if you want to get your wife shooting as well.

much difference between a 12 gauge and a 20 gauge. it appears that the 20 guage remington 870's are cheaper.

if i wanted to go really cheap, is the maverick 88 okay if i don't plan to really ever use it?
Dude, I own a Maverick 88. It's an excellent weapon.

Like I said, if you were looking for a cheap shotty, I couldn't recommend the Maverick enough.

20 gauge may be a little harder to find, though. 12 gauge is the more popular size. (Talking about ammo here, not weapons)

Not a lot of difference. Odd, 12 and 20 are usually about the same price.

thanks guys! I really appreciate it. So, I think it may be the Maverick 88. Do you think I should order it online and have it shipped to a store or just buy from a local store?

It'll be cheaper to buy it at the store. They generally go for what you can get online, and you don't have to pay the FFL tranfer fee or shipping.

Oh. General rule with shotguns - don't store them with a round in the chamber. Most aren't considered "drop safe". There's very little chance of anything crazy happening, but better to be safe than sorry.

It's not just about natural disasters directly affecting you. If something like what happened in Japan occurred here, do you think Americans would react as calmly and rationally? Katrina says "Hell no."

When people are looting, robbing, raping, and pillaging because a certain section of the population believes it's the rapture, apocalypse, end times, etc... You're not gonna just be able to run to the store to get basic supplies.

As for the zombie talk earlier, I feel it's necessary to point out that many people talk about zombies, but it can be used as an allegory for any type of disaster/civil disturbance. If you're prepared to face hordes of the brain-eating walking dead, you should be able to have a cogent enough plan to survive most things.

Not necessarily, check it both ways. I've ordered several from Bud's cheaper than instore even with paying $20 for transfer. Also no sales tax or shipping buying online.

I'll probably be ordering more soon, because a buddy just got a class 3 FFL. He's only going to deal in suppressors, but he said if I ordered anything online, he'd do the transfer free.

The 18" barrel is best for home defense. Inside, you want as short of a barrel as possible.

My 18" makes a pattern about the size of your fist with low-recoil 00 buck from about 7 yards. That says "GTFO" like nothing else.

18" barrel for self defense. For hunting, you'd want a longer barrel. I'm not sure about the Maverick, but I know you can get the 500 & 870 in a combo that comes with a short and long barrel. You could also buy a longer barrel later and just swap it if needed.

A 500 barrel will fit in the 88. You can just buy a 21" or whatever down the road if you decide you want to hunt with it.

Indeed. Good thing simply being prepared per FEMA's advice is not irrational.

I'd suggest you go look up some of the crazy shit that went down during Katrina. Unless you like to keep burying your head in the sand. Whatever works for you. Smilie

I don't think they are legal in California, but if you can, a collapsible stock might come in handy too. That would allow you to adjust the length of the buttstock to a comfortable length for you, your wife, even your kids when they get old enough.
