The word 'rape'

3,834 187 May 29, 2011 at 07:26 AM
Some of you have already read this because I posted this on my fb status but I feel like its worth repeating. We bought (financed) a mattress today and the guy who was selling it to us told us to make sure to pay it off before the interest free period ends because "They will rape you, they will absolutely rape you, they won't even take you to dinner first."
Was that okay for him to say? I thought it was unprofessional and I personally would never use the word rape in every day context like that. It takes away from the severity of the meaning.

Unprofessional, but I use it all the time casually. I'd never say it to someone I didn't know or a customer/boss.

I never use the word. So yes, and I would have told him not to say shit like that.

You should have started shaking uncontrollably and curled up on the floor in the fetal position and had your boyfriend explain to the salesman that you were recently raped and his insensitivity triggered a flashback.

But yeah, I think the word does get used far more than necessary.

Extremely unprofessional. I would never use "rape" as a synonym for "overcharge."

Its really not rape anyways. You consented to the interest charges, so really its just unpleasant consensual sex.

I use it in casual conversation with friends, but I wouldn't even use it in front of a customer/boss/boyfriend's parents/someone I didn't know, etc. There's a time and a place, but that's definitely not one of them.

I'm surprised how easily many people use the term, considering how egregious an act rape is, and considering how often rapes occur. I've heard various statistics, but it sounds like at least 5% of women have been raped (and some studies say it's much higher).

I'm just excited that I got to use a big word like "egregious." Whee

yeah, that was inappropriate, utr.

another over-used word is "gay". gay used to mean happy, then sexual orientation and now it means stupid. kids today are saying "oh that song is so gay" or "that video was gay".

i don't believe they mean it in derogatory sense, i think the word has evolved like the way it used to mean "happy"

Rape is a brutally action against a person consent, can be plunder, despoil; often associated with sexuality but not limited to, I think.

I don't mean to say in a way that would make it seem like I'm downplaying the seriousness of rape, although I understand it comes off that way. That's why I'm really careful who I say it around, especially because I could never know one's history and if they've been seriously affected by it. I read about women/men getting raped, but I feel really far removed from it since I've never been affected by it directly (and hopefully it stays that way), as I'm sure is the case for those who use the term liberally. Doesn't make it right, though, and I acknowledge that.
