The word 'rape'

3,834 187 May 29, 2011 at 07:26 AM in Question
Some of you have already read this because I posted this on my fb status but I feel like its worth repeating. We bought (financed) a mattress today and the guy who was selling it to us told us to make sure to pay it off before the interest free period ends because "They will rape you, they will absolutely rape you, they won't even take you to dinner first."
Was that okay for him to say? I thought it was unprofessional and I personally would never use the word rape in every day context like that. It takes away from the severity of the meaning.

I both agree and disagree with this. Some words really ARE offensive..the "n" word comes to mind....but in some instances, it's become a little much. You can't say anything without offending SOMEONE and it's really time to stop looking for something to be offended by in everything.
I can see why some words are more offensive than others. I still believe it's all about how much you let it bother you, rather than some innate mechanism that the word possesses.

Honest to God, I read this as "the most laid black person ever" and I thought...HEY that's not only offensive, it's intrusive!! Stick Out Tongue
LMAO

I'm neither of the above!

  2. I wouldn't expect you to.
  3. I'm content with that. Cool
  4. Brownie points for proper grammar on the bolded. Smilie
Do you mean when people say I COULD care less? That never made sense to me and makes the person sound like an idiot because inferring that they could care less is saying that they care at least a little bit.

I think it's more offensive when it's MEANT to be offensive, not when someone's just talking, if that makes sense. Like if you attack someone's ethnicity, religion, character, etc...that is more offensive than if you're just having a conversation about some random things.

And while you may never be black, here's hoping you get laid...at some point.

Inappropriate and unprofessional. And if he speaks that way to a customer it makes you wonder what else he finds acceptable in the workplace.

Ahhh Paint with his "words are just words." Rolleyes Perhaps, but it's best to watch them in the workplace and in dealing with customers lest someone sue.

To your first point, it could have just been an expression that he doesn't think is bad.

To the second, don't completely invalidate the fact that there are two approaches to this. The philosophical, in which Paint is dead right... the only value a word has is that which we give it. And the realistic, in which (unfortunately or not) people can be sensitive to certain words or phrases and we would be wise to be aware of that.
So we can all argue til we're blue in the face over the "right" or "wrong" of the philosophy, but I'm not quite ready to run through Harlem yelling the N word.

I was just saying that in this litigious society I have seen people sue on the basis of far less. If a pattern of behavior could be proven or corroborated there is a greedy plaintiff just waiting.

Who was that comedian who joked that he loved seeing white people try to sing rap songs that got stuck in their head because they never knew what to do when the N word came up? laugh out loud So true.
