kay - JofC is ovewhelming if you leaf through it. it's not designed to be a look at pictures book. it's a reference book. i was overwhelmed too when i first saw it. i'm a visual person. for me, the best way to use it is, identify something you want to make (wheat dinner rolls, broiled salmon, white sauce, mashed potatoes, whatever). then look up that recipe page from the index at the back. and then just follow that recipe a sentence at a time. before you know it, you'll have a well-made thing and you'll like the book.
JofC is like a cooking teacher. you want to learn to make something, it'll stand there and teach you. done.
you want inspiration and pretty pictures to look at? JofC doesn't care.
