Thanks for the reassurance! Luckily a lot of our laundry was due to be washed anyway...I threw together a few extra loads of stuff and anything plush-like that I knew they'd been playing with just to be sure. Dh was home today and gracious enough to help me clean worship thank heavens because I never attempt to clean the house in one day anymore, it is too daunting a task! We tackled it and are almost done, I will remember to check dd's hair every day thanks!
When I hear about a lice outbreak at school, as a preventative measure, I have my DD use the Suave coconut shampoo and conditioner. Then we put her hair up in a braided pony and spray the heck out of it with hairspray. Allegedly, lice do not like coconut oil (or tree tea oil) nor do they like the stickiness of the hairspray. I don't know if it truly helps, but it at least makes me feel like I'm doing something - plus there's a new suave TQ!

it will take awhile. our lives revolve around coupons but only about 3% of coupons ever get redeemed (maybe a few percentage points more now due to the economy) and most of the population don't even use them. it's not big news. look how long it took for the target thing to get going and only b/c it was a slow news month. i think the update was around june and those consumer reporters didn't pick it up until august and only b/c the state DA's were starting to get involved. i think the biggest effect was that target and walmart read the coupons and law very carefully and now just give overage b/c it doesn't happen all that often and has a minuscule effect on their bottom line.

somebody has to inform the mfrs, their legal teams have to investigate and then they may not do anything to her personally but they'll just cut down or discontinue some coupon promos. the legal fees may not be worth it unless they want to make an example of her. she may only get tarred and feathered by public opinion but she has to have done enough $ worth to bring it above a misdemeanor for it to be worth it. what's the limit for grand larceny in MD? hmmm- http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_va...n_Maryland

what was her total and how much was illegit?

her target runs were only misdemeanors so probably not enough to get the corporate lawyers interested.

many mfrs and retailers may also be just waiting for the gs1 databar sunrise on july 1st. they will have spent millions of dollars on it. although i understand from that article i posted several months ago that that retailers can choose not to read certain sections of the databar just like target doesn't right now.

Key Points

* GS1 Company Prefixes. The existing structure only allows companies with a 6-digit prefix the ability to coupon. The new format can accommodate variable length prefixes.
* Coupon value codes can now be in any amount up to $999.99, and the are not limited to a table of only 100 possibilities.
* Precise offer descriptions and validation of offers involving specified quantity purchases can now be expressed.
* Fraud reduction due to complexity of description and save values. Also, the entire bar code encoded data is not presented in human readable format.
* Automatic expiration date checking for retailers.

i think the 3rd part is silly. just because it's not in human readable format doesn't mean somebody won't have a scanner and not be able to decode it. duh!!! iphones and androids can scan barcodes right now. somebody will sit there and decode them all and publish a list of all the values on the internet eventually. anyone who can scan them will be able to decipher them instead of going by the numbers underneath the barcode right now.
Not sure where you found that current redemption rates are only 3% but that is not the case since the start of the recession in 2008.

In fact, coupon use has grown so monumentally the statistics for 2009 are staggering.
While the reliability of the statistics on this site [ilovecouponmonth.com] may be questionable...most of the other stats found on other sites are similar.

Quote :
27% increase in coupon redemption [from 2008 to 2009]
I've come across #'s of 27 & 29%

Quote :
More than 3.3 billion coupons were redeemed in 2009, for a total savings of $858 million
Quote :
Internet coupons are on the rise, but they still represent only a tiny fraction of the market, less than half a percent. But of all coupons redeemed, they account for 1.5 percent.
The last quote is based on 2009 statistics.

So, it's not as small as you think.

And stats on those that use coupons...

Quote :
In 2010, the survey reveals that 78.3% regularly use coupons compared to 77% in 2009, 75.8% in 2008 and 63.6% of consumers in the pre-recession survey of 2007.

Submitted by onlyethicalcouponers on Fri, 04/08/2011 - 03:20.

A lot has happened since Jill's original post. Got to read this as it sure looks like J'aime committed coupon fraud on TV.

Smart readers took screen shots from your trip and nothin's matchin' up, J'ai'me.

J'a'i'me's shopping list shown on TV shows only the product family code part of the bar code and the dollar amount. Why would someone make a spreadsheet of coupons that might work on other products made by the same company? Well let's see.

To use .75 Fiber One cereal coupons on Kix, Cheerios and Lucky Charms. The .75 Fiber One cereal coupons will scan on any General Mills cereal but they are higher value then the other cereal coupons that were out the first week of February for her trip.

To use Buddig Deli Cuts $1 coupons for 12/16oz. meats for the cheap little 2 ounce Buddig packets on sale for .89 and get them free. Only missing about 10 more ounces of meat plus it is the wrong item.

To use .50 Pillsbury French Bread coupons on the tiny cans of .99 Pillsbury rolls, because the coupons will double to $1 and get them free. Only again, completely wrong product, total fraud.

To use $5-off-2 Nivea Body Lotion coupons on Nivea Body Wash, because the lotion is almost $6 but the body wash is under $3 per bottle. Wrong product again, princess.

What next?

This is only what got shown on TV. What didn't? Hope J'a'i'm'e is ready for a coupon fraud charge.

Only Ethical Couponers.
Holy cow! I knew there was more fraud to be found. Why the crap would you ever think it would be a good idea to go on TV when you roll like that?!

Have you found anything that gives the current rate of redemption though? If the redemption rate was 3% - and has an increase of 27% to 29% - has it risen to 4% yet?

Thanks for the info. I know someone who is working on an research paper about coupons for their English class. I will pass some of the links on to them. Smilie

sorry, but ya gotta be careful of that marketing spinRoll Eyes (Sarcastic).

i've barely done anything productive all day so i didn't want to spend too much time hunting around for numbers so i'll just use this article from 1/07 and extrapolate b/c there was just too much hype online to weed thru unless i was writing a paper for school or work.

*Overall coupon redemption rates hover between 1 and 3 percent year-over-year.*
http://mthink.com/affiliate-perfo...redemption

this article says between 1-5% but it doesn't have a date-
http://www.toolkit.com/small_busi...d=P03_7016

this article from 9/10 says-
Coupon Redemption Rates
There is one potential downside to the use of coupons by consumers. In 2009, business nationwide issued 367 billion coupons, of which only 3.3 billion were redeemed by consumers. That's a redemption rate of slightly under 1%.
http://www.consumerwarningnetwork...pon-craze/ but they are just trying to justify the groupon craze. they are comparing apples to oranges. you don't find coupons for massages, manicures and exercise classes in smartsource and redplum.

i'll just use the number from your article-
General Facts about Coupons in 2009
3. Coupon redemption increased for the first time since 1992
17%- The percentage that coupon usage increased in 2009 over the year before. (in big bold pink down in the lower left corner.)
http://www.ilovecouponmonth.com/statistics/

i will be generous with all the numbers. let's just assume in 2007 3% of all coupons issued were redeemed and we'll increase it by 17% year over year for 2008, 2009 and 2010.

so 3% x 17% = .51%. so we'll say overall coupon redemption in 2008 was 3.51%
3.51% x 17% = .60%. so we'll say overall redemption in 2009 was 4.11%
4.11% x 17% = .70%. so we'll say overall redemption in 2010 was 4.81%

that is less than a couple percentage points increase in overall coupon redemption from my 3% which i accounted for.

even if i used 30% increase yr over yr on 3% overall redemption, the number comes out to 6.59%. so if i were to spin that, i could say that coupon redemption increased 120% from 2007. however, in that number i don't take into account the increase in the number of coupons distributed so the number would most likely shrink, maybe by a lot since there are now mobile q's, cellfire and a host of other coupon distributors since 2007. so while redemption rates have grown, so have the amount of coupons offered.

if we do it on a more personal level, let's just assume between a smartsource and redplum every wk there are 100 coupons altogether. how many of those 100 coupons do you redeem? 5, maybe 10, and you are a coupon enthusiast which accounts for only 10% of shoppers. 81% of units purchased w/ coupons came from only 19% of households according to this article-
http://www.brandweek.com/bw/conte...d2e4335d04

for example, out of the whole p&g every month, either me, bff or somebody else usually uses just the tide, bounty, cws, oil of olay bar and maybe 1-2 more coupons of the 55 coupons in the 4/3 circular from last wk. but i doubt anybody is going to use the tide b/c it's only 1.00/2, i won't be using the charmin 1.00/2, and there wasn't *any olay bar* q this month. so say 3 of the 55 q's in there end up being redeemed this month. that comes out to 5.5% and that's being very generous. it may only end up being 1 of 55 or 1.8%.

not saying coupons aren't big business b/c it obviously is to the companies and consumers involved. just have to be careful of the spin marketing companies put on it to drum up business.

these numbers show why more targeted marketing of coupons is more attractive to mfrs and why they get you to sign up for email newsletters, cellfire (i just did last month), facebook and other targeted programs to increase redemption rates over sunday newspaper distribution.

Thanks for all the positive thoughts guys. I had a nice stiff drink last night and went to bed. I'm feeling much better today. I just don't want to come across as a whiny brat when I'm bitching about how stressed I am with the move and new house. I totally know that people have sick kids, cheating husbands, dead parents, incurable cancer, and other real problems that make mine look miniscule.

Anyways, went to T this morning and made myself feel better. Evil After that baby bop and I went to Sears and checked out washers and dryers.

Quote from Dazzledby5 :
I hate HATE my front loader washer and dryer.
We're going to go ahead and get our washer and dryer that we'll eventually move to the new house. Does anyone have one that they love, recommend, hate, etc? I don't really need anything fancy, there are only 4 of us so it's not like I'm doing laundry for 12 people.

Quote from mamaoftwins2 :
I haven't done anything today at all..That.Is.All...I was working much more efficiently when my kids were sick...cleaning the house top to bottom, doing laundry, cooking...I have 1 load of laundry on my dining table to be folded, another in the dryer, kids toys scattered around, have no idea what I am making for dinner, tons of cpns arriving in the mail that would need filing, pack DH's bags...Can we start the day all over again
Duuuuuuuuuuuude... tell DH to pack his own bags and get yourself to T. Whee

I have heard that a lot of ppl hate their front-loaders m2c Dontknow And then I'm sure there are some ppl that are happy with them too. One complaint that made sense to me was that it is very hard if not impossible to add anything to the load once it is started? I know I find myself doing that on occasion. DH and I bought extra-large-capacity Roper washer and dryer (slightly used) shortly after we were married because someone offered us a great deal on them and the ones that came with the house weren't that great. That was nearly 5 yrs. ago and we've had no issues (well, except the water backing up which was a plumbing issue, not a washer/dryer issue) and I just love them. My washer is sooooo nice and roomy. We have enough clothes that I can usually manage 3 big lds. every week-and-a-half or so. They are not HE but at least the big capacity means bigger loads less often which is supposed to be more energy-efficient.

I got the Kenmore HE Elite top loading washer and dryer and I absolutely LOVE them! You could probably fit 2 queen-sized comforters inside the washing machine - seriously. I used to wash at least 2-3 loads of towels each week, now, just one. It doesn't run for as long as some of the other HE washers so it's truly economical from a water AND energy perspective.

The dryer, well, what can I say.... it's a dryer - just monster sized. Dries everything in 1/2 the time but can take longer if you want a cooler temp. It has a steam dry feature (really it's a touch-up feature), shoe rack - everything you could imagine. I know you only have 4 people in your house but we only had 2 (and now 2 guests that have been here for a few months) and we never have backed up laundry anymore. I'm usually searching for stuff to throw in the load each week! 1 load of colors, 1 of whites (usually every other week now), 1 load of towels and 1 load of delicates - done for the week! It's awesome!

In terms of price, buy them when they're on sale, or when you get double or triple SYWR points - even if you buy them at regular price though, they are comparable to any other HE washer/dryer and you will LOVE them.

i can, no problem. just hit the star/pause button and wait for the door to unlock. they may think it uses so little water they can't add anymore, but the machine senses if it needs more water and will add as necessary. even my 1998 maytag neptune front loader would adjust the water level.

it just takes getting used to. front loaders are definitely more gentle on clothes so they last longer. they use so little water now you are supposed to mix different weights of clothing, ie, mix jeans and shirts together to add to the pounding on rocks actionlaugh out loud.
