A very dear friend saved my butt on this one. She decided that as she has minimal taxable income this year, she'd accept the prize under her name and SS#. Once it arrived, she graciously forwarded it to me. My sending it to my niece should have been the end of the whole story, but this is ME we're talking about. ME and a PURSE.
Before it even arrived here, I excitedly showed a picture to my sister and told her how I'd won it for her daughter-in-law. She just shook her head and told me, "There's no way she'll want that." Now, I'll admit, it's not my idea of beauty incarnate, but it's a Valentino purse and it's my nephew's wife who would be getting it, right?
My sister gently explained that it's a day-time purse, something a woman would wear to a country club luncheon with her rich friends. It's not a purse that a woman with two young children would wear grocery shopping, or to Target. As much as Debbie might love it, it would end up in a closet and never see the light of day again. She suggested that I send her the picture of it and explain that I'd won it and wanted to know if she could use it.
I emailed Debbie Tuesday morning and she called me that evening. She was almost in tears because, as gorgeous(????) as the purse looked, she would be afraid to wear it. She then told me that just a few months before, her daughter had somehow knocked Debbie's purse out the car door and Debbie had run over it. As it was a Kmart special, she'd simply pulled out what could be salvaged and dumped the rest of the mess. But, she said, if it had been a Valentino purse, she'd probably still be in shock.
As my sister had warned me that this might be the result of my offer, I'd already been considering alternatives. I checked eBay and nobody was bidding on purses. I checked Craigslist but the purse is way too high-end for that. I asked my fashionista boss if she had any suggestions, and she said, "Why a resale shop, of course." She has a lot of friends that take things they're bored with or that don't fit to resale shops. The ones they use are in Beverly Hills, naturally. She figures that if the MSRP is $2,400, I could probably get about $1,000 for it less the shop's commission, but no guarantees. And it might take a while to sell.
So when my niece called, I told her I'd sell it and buy her another kind of Valentino purse and asked what she wanted. She said she'd love a small evening purse for when she goes to business functions with her husband. I told her to check out possibilities and let me know what she came up with. (My nephew emailed me and said that she'd been poring over websites after the kids were asleep and had even visited a few expensive retailers to check out the stock.)
Are you sitting down? She found the perfect item – a wristlet. It's black (not PP colored) with the Valentino logo somewhere on the clasp and she adores it.
I wish I had a nickel for every person I seen peeing on the side of the road..
