Student loan mysteriously paid off?

637 146 December 20, 2011 at 05:49 PM
I recently went on my student loan website and realized that it's mysteriously paid off on 12/8/11. I'm the only one who knows my account information and very few people even know I have student loans. I researched the web extensively on student loan forgiveness and I definitely don't fit ANY of them by any stretch of the imagination. Has anyone else experienced this? The only thing I have come across is that my FIRST student loan disbursement was on 12/7/01, so 12/8/11 marks a 10 year anniversary. The website gives absolutely no information on how it was paid off, or why. Under "payer", it says "other", nothing else. I've also examined my portfolio to make sure I didn't pay it off myself under a drunken stupor, but nope, nothing there either. Maybe this is just a Christmas present from the government?

ETA: My loan was in good standing and on automatic payment. They automatically take out of my checking account every month on the 28th. I'm anxious to see if they will this month.

Are you Chinese or Japanese? I hear that their governments have been paying off student loans for years!

A few months ago I paid off one of my ex-wife's student loans. It was through our local school district where we had both graduated high school and when we got them they let us co-sign for each other. Apparently she hadn't made any payments in a while and they sent out a notice about the loan being delinquent and I got a copy as the co-signer.

I called the number in the letter and asked for the payoff amount and just sent a check to pay it off. I never let her know I paid it off but she would have gotten a statement saying it was paid along with the original paperwork marked paid.

I wonder if she will ever mention it? laugh out loud

Just a wild guess, but I say your student loan was sold to another entity. Either that or somebody paid off their student loan and your account was credited by mistake. Dontknow

Likely a transfer of loan holders, happened to me but I didn't think it mysteriously got paid off, I was more or so ticked because I didn't want to be charged late fees because of their slow transferring process and I couldn't pay them on time. The letter finally showed up in the mail about the "transfer" from one loan holder to another. Did you try calling them?

Depending on what you do, there was a 10 year plan that if you work for non-profit all your loans will be forgiven.

There are people going around and mysteriously paying off Lay-away Plans for people who cannot afford the payments and are delinquent on them - maybe this is happening with Student Loans Dontknow

But with the Lay-away Plans for KMart, people specifically are going in and asking who is in arrears that holds toys, and items such as this - and are paying the accounts off - and KMart is calling the people to tell them their Lay-away Plan has been paid off - and to come pickup their items - and whomever the good Samaritans are - are nameless - I think this began in Michigan - and has now spread across the USA - but funny thing - WalMart does not seem to be included - as KMart has always had a Lay-Away Plan - and WalMart did not always have one.

So possibly someone paid your Student Loan off as a goodwill gesture for Christmas like the above Dontknow (but don't believe so Nono2)
