Student loan mysteriously paid off?

637 146 December 20, 2011 at 05:49 PM in Chat
I recently went on my student loan website and realized that it's mysteriously paid off on 12/8/11. I'm the only one who knows my account information and very few people even know I have student loans. I researched the web extensively on student loan forgiveness and I definitely don't fit ANY of them by any stretch of the imagination. Has anyone else experienced this? The only thing I have come across is that my FIRST student loan disbursement was on 12/7/01, so 12/8/11 marks a 10 year anniversary. The website gives absolutely no information on how it was paid off, or why. Under "payer", it says "other", nothing else. I've also examined my portfolio to make sure I didn't pay it off myself under a drunken stupor, but nope, nothing there either. Maybe this is just a Christmas present from the government?

ETA: My loan was in good standing and on automatic payment. They automatically take out of my checking account every month on the 28th. I'm anxious to see if they will this month.

A few months ago I paid off one of my ex-wife's student loans. It was through our local school district where we had both graduated high school and when we got them they let us co-sign for each other. Apparently she hadn't made any payments in a while and they sent out a notice about the loan being delinquent and I got a copy as the co-signer.

I called the number in the letter and asked for the payoff amount and just sent a check to pay it off. I never let her know I paid it off but she would have gotten a statement saying it was paid along with the original paperwork marked paid.

I wonder if she will ever mention it? laugh out loud

You did a good gesture for her, but also kept yourself from going into arrears as well; not too many men would have done so Nono

Sadly, if she realizes I paid it off she will think I did so in order for her to be in debt to me. I have no interest in getting the money back and will refuse it if she tries. I am fortunate enough to currently be pretty secure financially and she is now a single mom working her ass off to get by and I don't know if she gets much help from her son's father. I've helped out other friends when things were tight and I've had friends help me out when things weren't so good for me so I really didn't give it much thought before sending out the check.

There are people going around and mysteriously paying off Lay-away Plans for people who cannot afford the payments and are delinquent on them - maybe this is happening with Student Loans Dontknow

But with the Lay-away Plans for KMart, people specifically are going in and asking who is in arrears that holds toys, and items such as this - and are paying the accounts off - and KMart is calling the people to tell them their Lay-away Plan has been paid off - and to come pickup their items - and whomever the good Samaritans are - are nameless - I think this began in Michigan - and has now spread across the USA - but funny thing - WalMart does not seem to be included - as KMart has always had a Lay-Away Plan - and WalMart did not always have one.

So possibly someone paid your Student Loan off as a goodwill gesture for Christmas like the above Dontknow (but don't believe so Nono2)

It's not often to find people like that. You're a selfless guy. One of the best atributes (IMO) is to give with good intent without expectations of repayment. To me the repayment is to know you helped someone who needed it and made their life a little better. hug

As a cosigner you are obligated, yes?

LOL. Well that's a nice gesture on your part! I don't think anyone would do that for me though... I don't have any co-signers and no ex-spouses. My parents are the only possibility, but I don't see why they would do that out of the blue, without telling me, especially considering they are trying to refi their house. I am, however, going to check with them just to rule out the possibility.

I really have no idea how much of it they could have come after me for. The loan was a combination of 5 separate loans (one each year for five years when we were going to school). I think we co-signed for each other for 3 of those once we figured out we could do that. I'm sure they could probably have worked the numbers to hold me responsible for at least a good chunk of what was still due.

Also I'm not sure exactly how the divorce would come into play. I would have to read the details on how the outstanding debts were put down in the paperwork. I don't know if me being released from responsibility for those loans would override being a co-signer or not.

This way I don't need to worry about it. But yeah, it wasn't a completely selfless act--I was also acting in my own best interest.
