Student loan mysteriously paid off?

637 146 December 20, 2011 at 05:49 PM in Chat
I recently went on my student loan website and realized that it's mysteriously paid off on 12/8/11. I'm the only one who knows my account information and very few people even know I have student loans. I researched the web extensively on student loan forgiveness and I definitely don't fit ANY of them by any stretch of the imagination. Has anyone else experienced this? The only thing I have come across is that my FIRST student loan disbursement was on 12/7/01, so 12/8/11 marks a 10 year anniversary. The website gives absolutely no information on how it was paid off, or why. Under "payer", it says "other", nothing else. I've also examined my portfolio to make sure I didn't pay it off myself under a drunken stupor, but nope, nothing there either. Maybe this is just a Christmas present from the government?

ETA: My loan was in good standing and on automatic payment. They automatically take out of my checking account every month on the 28th. I'm anxious to see if they will this month.

Only one way to find out. Call and ask. If it's an accounting error you don't want it to go unnoticed because you'll think it's paid off only to be hit with late charges and massive interest down the road.

Sadly, if she realizes I paid it off she will think I did so in order for her to be in debt to me. I have no interest in getting the money back and will refuse it if she tries. I am fortunate enough to currently be pretty secure financially and she is now a single mom working her ass off to get by and I don't know if she gets much help from her son's father. I've helped out other friends when things were tight and I've had friends help me out when things weren't so good for me so I really didn't give it much thought before sending out the check.

wish we could rep in the lounge worship

LOL. Well that's a nice gesture on your part! I don't think anyone would do that for me though... I don't have any co-signers and no ex-spouses. My parents are the only possibility, but I don't see why they would do that out of the blue, without telling me, especially considering they are trying to refi their house. I am, however, going to check with them just to rule out the possibility.
it says paid, but it also says "Other" which likely means (sorry to say) that it was passed on to another lender because it's officially 10 years old. Comfort

but let us know what happens!

Just for shits and giggles, try using your same login over at salliemae.com in the student loan section. From my understanding, they bought out all the CitiBank accounts, and not sure if they're doing the same with other banks.

I only received info about the switch via snail mail. So, if you recently moved, or they have an old address on file, you may of never got the notification. My fingers are crossed for you though hoping that it is just a payoff/mistake/etc.

Your link makes me believe that's what happened. although my account info doesn't work there, it doesn't disprove the theory.

When I tried to log in, this is what it said:

The user ID and password combination you entered is incorrect. Please recheck your typing and try again. Remember, your password is case sensitive.

The information you provided for your student loan account does not match our internal records.

I dunno...I went back to your screenshot and see you have US Dept of Ed. loans...however I didn't see anything in Google regarding a buyout...maybe your golden?

My advice unless you own a home...MOVE...and keep moving every 3-6 months. "Plausible deniability" If the bills can't catch you, they must not be yours Smilie

Oh I definitely will! What's been puzzling me the most is the fact that, with my extensive google searches, I haven't found another person that has stated a similar experience as me. If this was some kind of forgiveness, surely I can't be the only one wondering what's going on? I initially thought of a loan transfer as well, but with it being a government loan, I wasn't sure if they'd do transfers. =/ I suppose 12/28 will answer everything - that's the scheduled date of the month to deduct money from my checking account. *fingers crossed*

The exact same thing is going on with my account. I just found this by searching for "student loan mysteriously paid off". My account also has perfect payment history and it's also with myedaccount.com. I did not get any notice of any kind about a transfer etc. It shows paid off on 12/8/2011 (the amount is around 12k).

so i'm not ENTIRELY alone i guess. and the 12/8/2011 date is just a coincidence that it's a 10 year anniversary to my first disbursement of money. Sounding more and more like a buyout. but if it's not, then that's a sweet Christmas gift for us!

well i had more - i already paid some of it off. I also didn't take out loan every year, and had scholarships, help from family, and income from working. but look at me now, i'm unemployed so those student loans didn't really help me get very far. lol.

Ah... YEAH. I know my student loan isn't as much as some people, but $6k is still a lot of money! This is so bizarre...

OK. Since I am in a giving mood this Christmas season, I will have a drawing whereby I pay off one Lounger's debt. Please PM me your pertinent info including account numbers, login, etc., and I will pick one winner at random who will find their debt paid off tomorrow.
