are you happy with your decision of college/major?

i got the idea from this but i'm also bitter about what the perception vs reality is between colleges. in california.. the general thought is you go to a cal state if you can't go to a uc. my sister went to the best uc she could get into (at the time) and hated every minute of it. i went to a uc and hated the major options. after completing the sequence and talking to friends i know i made a horrible mistake.

also, if you're not doing something that requires a degree...maybe its better you just get an associates/trade school cert and avoid the huge debt collge has

edited to say.. this is mostly 2000 + era when the cost of a degree is so large, any college degree won't pay off. it used to be you can get anything and make more than a high school graduate. now paying tons for just the sake of saying you have a degree from a "good" school doesn't pay off.

does she qualify for scholarships?
She is a smart cookie. She attends a blue ribbon, class A, college preparatory, private high school. The current stats on graduates getting scholarships is over 90%. She is currently taking 2 Honors/AP courses and will take 3 next year. I'm also hoping to take advantage of any scholarships that she can apply for given the fact that she is half Hispanic.

I've got three brothers with EE degrees and I think it's funny that I'm the only one who does any electrical engineering or even spends any quality time with a soldering iron. (I'm also the one in the family who hooks up the stereo/home theater systems for everybody else, too.)

I don't know how much of a difference it made, but I'm sure it didn't hurt that I entered a lot of science and math competitions during my senior year and did the science fair circuit. ACS has an annual competition for high schoolers and the science fairs are well-attended by companies and organizations looking to hand out awards (scholarships, cash prizes, and fancy-looking medals and plaques) to contestants who have projects relevant to their areas of interest. I don't think it looks bad on an application and those cash prizes are better than gift cards.
I need to push that kind of stuff with her NOW. When we lived in Oceanside, CA she took 3rd place in the Greater San Diego Science & Engineering Fair in plant sciences...but that was when she was in 6th grade. Her current extra curricular activities include Junior Classical League (Latin) & she recently attended a national journalism conference. While these are fine and dandy to add to her applications, I agree that she needs to become more involved in the area she wants to pursue academically. Thanks for the input!

No, she is not a migrant. My cousin is half Dominican and received scholarship/grant money via Hispanic scholarships/grants. He is a graduate of Notre Dame.

To answer the bolded...google is your friend [hsf.net]. It would also be to your advantage to spell scholarship correctly too as applicants are required to have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA. laugh out loud

I'd say that is an advantage for her as she can apply for these scholarships in addition to all of the scholarships/grants that her Caucasian friends will be applying for. laugh out loud

Sbux, I heart ya, but sometimes I just wanna Smack the silly outta ya. laugh out loud

ETA: this [hsf.net]is a better link that lists all of the scholarships available.

I have a grad degree in EE. I have a fairly narrow sub-specialty (in the very large EE domain as the previous posters have commented). So yes, I use my education very often and am happy with the college/major/etc.

I have a BS and Master's in MSE from Hopkins. I have no regrets about having attended Hopkins or choosing that degree. I can happily say I was not a "statistic" in the sense that I never changed my major during school. I won't really be using the degree too much though because I'm going to med school in the fall laugh out loud

When I first moved to CA, the first thing I noticed was that many people are/were embarrassed to say that they went to a State school versus a UC. Why is that?

But yes I'm happy with my college decision and major.... Aviation Science / Aviation Management

im aware of the scholorships. i am hispanic. and an educated one as well. i guess i was irked by a white person taking money for a hispanic scholorship. i mean. theres a reason they make those race specific. to equalize the disadvantage of being hispanic in white america.
not only is your dd half white. but shes not economically disadvantaged. why take money from people who NEED it. annnnnnddd before u tell me how to spell look and see how greedy you really are.

not trying to pick on those older, but i'm more interested in the post 2000 crowd. should have specified. my guess is that a current uc in state tuition would be a lot more than your private education cost even inflation adjusted.

college tuition has ballooned with benefits dwindling IMO. reputations aren't worth near enough unless you get a network to go with that has little to do with the education you receive.
I agree completely with you, even though I am an old guy. Smilie

At bare minimum, it makes a lot of sense to get a 2 year degree at community college, then transfer to a 4 year college if you really want a BS degree.

You are right, in the 80's/ early 90's, you could major in anything and it would be "worth it". Now, there's a lot of new college grads that can't find work, plus they have a mountain of debt.

More than happy with my degree from the College of Business at the University of Toledo, as I was able to get a job far away from the disgusting city of Toledo because of it! (Don't confuse my disgust with the city for my love of the college, completely separate to me.)

No. I'm not happy. I went to a local Technical College, straight out of high school. It sounded appealing, but was horrible for anyone who is at least somewhat intellectual and a recent high school graduate. It was full of idiots who just got denied everywhere else that they went. Sadwalk I got two Associates Degrees in different types of Drafting.

I wanted to be an architect, and then I guess I came to the conclusion it was too much of a managerial type of job. I'm not a people-person. Then a school counselor called up her husband's architectural firm and we found a guy who did 3D modelling of buildings and the pay was really good. So that's what I wanted to do instead! I always wanted to design houses...

So I went to the crap-college, and when I graduated I talked to a lady at employment services with the school. She said most architectural firms won't hire drafters... I looked at her like Huh "So why did you guys tell me I could get a job doing this when I graduate?" Facepalm Angry2 Weeping

And my credits don't transfer. Anywhere.

I'm not happy. Angry2

Regrets? Hope not. I would love to work with something related in the toy industry.

Care to elaborate? There are some things I have done in senior design that I can't see myself doing in a job (reliability bsing etc).

One of my colleagues does technical writing for Harley Davidson. Holy smokes, most boring engineering job ever.
It really depends on what job you're getting into. From what I notice about my job and my friends', is that those who work for DoD or defense contractors generally have tasks totally not related to their degree. These places normally have formal in-class and/or on the job training. Everywhere that I interviewed pretty much said that my degree is just a piece of paper that says that I can think and do stuff well. Granted, I'm still a noob. But still, I see all the vets and I can tell what kind work they're doing.

On the other hand, I find that my friends who have jobs related to their degrees are in places that specializes on something. For example, I know someone who works for Canon and they do R&D on CMOS sensors. Fun stuff right there.

My DD will be a senior next year and just tonight she showed me some pamphlet that listed the cost from local state school on up to Ivy league. She's interested in chemical engineering and I choked when I saw the cost for a state school that has an excellent engineering program (she'd be an out of state student.) $38k/year Jawdrop

Tell me more about this SD you got on your tuition?
Not really an SD. Combo of parents + scholarships Smilie

I am undetermined whether my college experience at such an old age is a good one or bad one...2 years in, 1.5 years to go for Bachelors and then 3 years of Law School. I figure it will take me about 2 years additional beyond that to actually complete my degree -- be that from simply being overloaded and too damn tired or just taking fluffy classes that do not pertain to my degree at all.

Either way -- if I continue the path I am on, I have a projected forecast of being done with college-s by the time I am old enough to collect social security...and wouldn't that defeat the purpose of going through all this crap???
