In retrospect, posting it to facebook, in the same place that she posted her original rant, simply shows that he saw it, wasnt going to take that disrespect, and let everyone know that he was going to teach his child a lesson, rather than let it sit up there or just disappear, as if it never happened.
Again, i agree its over the top, but its not egregious to post a public response, because it's already out there. The child made that happen.
Again, I agree shooting it was over the top, but as Demo said, he wasnt using the gun in discipline, just as a tool to destroy the laptop. He didnt threaten her with it, he didnt point it or wave it at anyone, he didnt go "And next time it'll be you instead of this laptop". He didnt show a ridiculous amount of "gun safety" issues, and perhaps he lives out in the county, outside of a incorporated city, where firing a gun on private property (safely) is legal and not out of the ordinary.
Poor tool choice, perhaps. Intent to threaten the daughter with it? I dont think so.
Again I will also say there is no doubt she deserved to be punished. I am 100% with him on taking the laptop away for good for her actions.
I imagine most people who own a firearm (s) and have been properly/professionally trained, and legally carry a handgun have a good understanding of the responsibilities involved. I take it very seriously, especially that I have child.
To anyone else responding to me....I'm as entitled as you are to my opinion and I may have different reasons than you. If you don't like I have an opinion, go somewhere else and talk amongst yourselves about it.

Im all for following through on consequences..but what this did was way extreme...i think hecould have handled it in a better way rather than resorting to redneck violence...i would hate to see what he does when she reallly gets out of hand...drugs..stealing..embezzlement...

There are lots of responsibilities of gun ownership - using them within the confines of the law is perfectly acceptable. Maybe where you live its a no-no wherever you are, and then I could see where you're coming from.
I have reason to believe that it is perfectly legal to discharge his weapon, since he probably lives in an area where it is legal to do so. Most counties (especially in the south) do not prohibit discharging your weapon as long as it is not reckless or endangering someone. I don't see it any different than someone taking a car or printer or whatever out to a lot and shooting the hell out of it.
Now, if it were illegal to do so, I would undoubtedly agree that it was poor form.

That's almost like saying people who swear are likely to have anger management issues. there may be a correlation, but its not causation.

Where I live, yes, it would be illegal for me to fire my handgun in my backyard at a laptop. When I was trained, things like that were not mentioned on the list of how to's.
Maybe I think a little different....like what if (even though he was shooting in a calm fashion) one of those bullets for whatever reason hit the person taking the video? I just see it as unsafe and irresponsible as a father figure. There are way to many other options he could have chose......and she could be without a laptop. And that part I agree with.
I see it different than using a car or a hammer etc.....because those are not intended weapons. They could be used as weapons....anything could really.
I mean c'mon, he just updated it so it must have been working. He should have had it on and running and sitting up on a post or something (taking care of course that the area behind is safe for shooting). Then he should have maybe had a target set up for a screen saver or maybe some cheesy old shooting game up on the screen as something more entertaining for the Youtube and facebook audience to watch. As an added touch he should have had a webcam pointed back at himself to capture the shot from the laptop's point of view.
The father's quick and careless decisions severely limited the entertainment potential of this situation.

Lots of people see guns as more than just tools to kill people. (Especially in the south). Lots of people take stuff out to shoot to bits for fun, so realistically if it were legal and that was the kind of mentality there, it probably didnt occur to him that it was going to be so distasteful to others.
Also, there was no one else filming, it was just him. He chose what looked like soft ground to shoot at too.
Whether he chose to use a sledgehammer, chainsaw, his knee, or a gun, ends up with the same result.
To him the gun is probably just another tool to meet that goal.
And if like my previous post, if in his community it was common or somewhat accepted and legal, it probably didnt have any stigma associated with it.

"Laptop dust, don't eat this." as he gives her a baggie of dust when she asks for her laptop.

I just hate when people jump down my throat when they have no idea that I have good reasons to back up my opinions. I hope you understand where I am coming from now and respect my choices of gun saftey. It would really tick me off if guys like this that are viral on youtube screw with our right to bear arms.

they'll probably call him a terrible father for making his daughter go through this emotional trauma and that only the most insane people would shoot a non-living object, "first its laptops, then its concentration camps"...
then someone will demand for CPS to take his child away and have him sent to jail.
