Yeah, the law is kind of screwy.
12+ — Buy rifle ammo with a note from a parent (may be some caliber restrictions; can't remember)
18+ — Buy any rifle/shotgun and any rifle/shotgun ammo
21+ — Buy pistol / pistol ammo
Now here's the funny part, you can buy 9mm 'pistol' ammo at age 18, as long as you say it's for a rifle. :|
Also, I think you can be any age and buy a black powder/mussel loader gun.

I carry a Ruger LCP or a Glock 36. The other list is a bit longer...AR15, Remington 870, Ruger 10/22, Mosin Nagant M44 Carbine, an old 20ga break open, 16ga break open, and a Winchester 30/30. I had a Romanian WASR10 but sold it last year.
