I remember hearing something along those lines in school...high school I think. I tried using that on my parents and they sure shut that BS down real quick. So..I pretty much dismissed crap like that from school in again.
Stuff like that really puts parents in a difficult situation. You don't want to undermine your child's teachers, but you can't humor that attitude either. The things he came home with were amazing at times. Annoyed Fortunately, at 20, he's finally growing up. It was a long 5 1/2 years.

BTW, did you know that when you turn 18 you are an adult & can do whatever you want? You no longer have to adhere to parent's rules. shake head All the kids I have contact with around here seem to believe that. What am I missing? When I turned 18, my curfew went from 9 - 10pm. laugh out loud That's about it. Our school staff didn't intimate that turning 18 meant our life was going to change completely either. As long as I was living at home & my parents were paying the bills, I played by their rules. It took us a while to beat that in our DS's head too. You get to ignore what your parents say, when you're living on your own & paying your own bills. Our DS comes & goes as he pleases, but when we ask him to do something we expect him to do it. One of his female friends thought she could go away for the weekend, w/o telling her parents the day she turned 18. They had told her no previously, but she was an adult now. Rolleyes2 She was planning to go down to our place in Miami with my DS. We told him absolutely not. She wasn't going anywhere with him, especially not to one of our properties, w/o parental permission. Where do they get these ideas? Maybe, we're just mean parents & I'm the one that doesn't get it.

I like the blues. Since I already have 2 Carolina (light) blue bras on my wishlist, I probably shouldn't buy anymore blue bras now. They need to stop introducing so many bras I want. Stick Out Tongue

you know, i have to chime in and say - perhaps it's neither parents nor teachers. by the time you're in jr high or high school, there is one influence that's greater than parents and teachers combined - that of your peers. imo it's the other kids that are the cause. i feel like most kids just want to belong and are so susceptible to what other kids say. all it takes is one queen bee to say 'we're adults when we're 18! i'm going to do whatever i want!' and if he/she is popular enough or has enough clout, everyone will follow and say this, no matter what their parents or teachers say. i think it's unfair to blame parents or teachers at this point - all it takes is 1 powerful bad seed to turn a crowd.

I totally agree. Even though kids are 18 and the school tell them they're adults now, they leave out all the other information like still living with parents, etc... which is quite important.

And no, I don't think you should ever think that you're mean parents. Otherwise, I think it kind of fuels the kids bullying elders like the Klein grandma. I was reading in some article that she doesn't think the police should punish them. And that she just wants a little respect or something about having their parents teach them a 'little" something. I was kind of appalled when I read that comment from her. Maybe she thinks she's being kind hearted, but those kids need to be punished and need to be made an example.

Apparently, the kids and their families are getting all sorts of death threats. I think society is being pretty mean to them and showing that what they did was wrong. I hope the kids get punished with community service or something, but it will be a long time before they live this down. They are so cruel.

The new thing in Chicago is that the middle school kids are all getting together in gangs of like 20-30. They are then beating people up. They beat up two doctors leaving Northwestern hospital and didn't take their money. Last summer, they beat up a tourist right in a Walgreens on Michigan Avenue.

It's pretty horrible to think about what these middleschool brats are capable of doing. I am glad society is reaching out to Karen and punishing those brats.

Peer pressure can be a big motivator. There's no denying that. I'm just going on personal experience. I was told in person by one of my DS's school counselors that me being in the meeting, after my DS turned 18, was a courtesy that my DS requested. If he had said not to include me, I never would have known about the meeting. In their view, after he turned 18 he made his own life decisions. The school was definitely teaching them that. Obviously, I'm more old school than most of you, but I don't think a child in high school should be making all the decisions that affect their future. Not to mention the fact that dad & mom are still paying for that future.

I really didn't mean to offend anyone. I love you girls. hug As I said, I have many close family members who are teachers, & principals. I respect the profession. I just don't agree with the things my DS was told in high school. I was glad to see all schools aren't giving kids these ideas. My sisters & I don't talk about their jobs much, so I don't know what they're teaching kids. Even if we did discuss it, both of them teach in elementary school & my niece teaches in middle school, so they aren't dealing with these issues anyway. Battling peer pressure is bad enough. Having the school officials undermine the parental position is too much. It caused us & other parents unnecessary headaches.

What a crappy perk. The past two Augusts, sephora has had a bag (or box) filled with several deluxe samples. I hope they have that again.

I'm actually really glad that's happening to those children and their families because frankly, I think they deserve it. Their parents didn't teach their children how to behave and they didn't address such behaviors when it was manifesting. I guess sometimes society can pull together and do the right thing like help Mrs. Klein go on vacation and bully those families and children right back.

This reminds me of that one girl at UCLA who was insensitive enough to make fun of Asian people talking at the library right after the Japanese tsunami. And what happened to her? She got her 15 minutes of fame, she had a ton of death threats via phone, email, etc...and was even scared to show up to take a final and in the end, she dropped out of UCLA.

I believe in Karma. And I think it works. And yes, I do realize I sound insensitive, but I get so incensed at situations like these.

About the teenage gangsters, that really sucks. I hope they get caught and get corporal punishment. That's just terrible what they're doing. Makes me not want to visit Chicago.

oh i'm not offended in any way. that is pretty awful that they suggest to do an official meeting without parents! i guess schools have really "come a long way"... when i was in school, while i think it was still the same law of 18 yr olds being able to "make their own decisions", the school never advertised it. it was always a rumor spread around by my peers. so i guess "in my day", it was mostly peer pressure. it sounds like your DS's school was a big part of the culprit for you tho. this is why i'm scared of schools. i want to take my future kids and put them in school in asia, where it's nice and disciplined. laugh out loud

"Makes me not want to visit Chicago." That's exactly the big concern. They're very concerned with tourism. The Walgreens beating happened during the day, and they are hiring police officers to work overtime because they're so worried about it getting so bad.

I agree with the rest of your post as well. Empowerment is good, but it's important not to get too out of hand. I hope the parents get slapped into shape as well. Maybe they should also be punished. Actually, maybe that's the way to go. If kids do something so horrible, the parents should be punished as well for not teaching their children to be respectful citizens.

I remember that UCLA girl's youtube clip. I didn't realize she dropped out. Oh well.
