I have a Freedom card that I nabbed last year but was curious how this compares to the Sapphire/Sapphire Preferred. Can anyone that has/had both comment on either?
Im in the process of buying a house, why shouldn't I get this offer?
It knocks your score down and depending on your current score it could mean 1/8 or 1/4 of a percent higher, which if you amortize it, depending on your loan size, could be in the thousands you'd be losing versus making $300 here and losing thousands due to a small decrease in your credit score. I only know of one score that was disclosed to me and that threshold is 740, if you get 739, it could cost you 1/4 point. and opening a cc could bring your score down by as much as 30 points (this happened to me, but I opened like 2 cards). Also, in refinancing or financing a house, they take the lowest score, this is from my experience also, maybe different lenders are different, not sure, just basing on my experience. If your score is like 800, then you have nothing to worry about.
i was wondering how the $300 dollars back works? Can someone briefly explain? Do i fill out a form or something.
Once you spend the 500 you will automatically receive the bonus points. You won't receive them immediately, but you will receive them at the end of the billing cycle. At least that's how I received mine.
I'm in the same situation as you..grad student working part time as a coop but good credit score. I got instantly approved so its worth a shot!
Me toOO!! Got Instant approval. This is so exciting. My first instant approval. Before I had to call citi and fight them for my first credit card lol, farkers were insinuating that I had a credit card and was delinquent/overdue/other garbage. I have never had a credit card prior to this citi card I have.

Freedom is an awesome general use card - the cashback for the 1st quarter was 5% back on all gas / amazon.com purchases and this quarter is 5% back on groceries. Lot of savings for most folks. I use it on on almost all day to day purchases. $300 cashback after $500 spent for signing up and no annual fee is crazy good.
Sapphire Preferred is a great traveler card. No foreign transaction fees and 2% back on all dining and travel related spending. They also let you use have an extra 20% in points for travel spending through their rewards page and give you a 7% annual dividend on earned points. I use it only on dining / travel. Sapphire has a $500 cashback sign up bonus (after spending $5k/3months). The card is physically made of a titanium blend (confirmed when asking CS), no CC#'s on front, and kind of heavy in weight which some folks may find "cool". First year fees are waived but it does carry a fee on years after if you decide to hold on to it.

Yep, this deal is ridiculously easy to take advantage of. No form to fill out, no hoops to jump through. Get the card, spend $500, and boom, your points appear on your account. It's about 5 clicks to redeem the points for a check.
AND it's a good card with the 5% cash back each quarter. These cash back deals on this card are pretty much a win all around.
A few notes:
- Not getting instant approval does NOT mean you're denied. I have decent credit and did not get instant approval, but I got the card with a pretty high credit limit.
- It's never a good idea to screw with your credit while you're in the process of a major purchase - a house, or a car, or whatever. Don't apply for credit cards. Wait it out.
- Don't cancel the card once you collect on the deal. Accounts that are held for short periods of time can hurt your credit score. Just hang on to the card - you don't even have to buy anything with it.
