Are Smartphones really worth $1200 per year to use???

ON TOP of the phone itself ? I don't think so.

What is it? Social status? My friend has one so I NEED one?

I'll take my dumb phone and laptop any day.

A summary from last time:

Quote from Maleficent :
I think you're just so intent on going against the grain (even though it's illogical, cumbersome, less convenient, and provides no actual benefit to you) so you can delude yourself into feeling "unique" and "special."

In fact, you're so hellbent on going against anything with any sort of mass popularity so you can be "different" that you actually make yourself believe that the crap you have is somehow "better."

And the funniest part about that is that it makes you so angry, you have to lash out at anyone that uses the devices that you hate so much. Which in turn makes you look like a complete idiot to everyone else because of your gigantic delusions, and then you become a social pariah.

Well... bravo, buddy. You certainly set yourself apart from the crowd. Thumbup

Dontknow I haven't seen anybody answer it yet. Everyone just says that whatever they happen to pay is worth it to them. Nobody seems to answer whether it is worth $1200

That's because OP is delusional and no one actually pays that much, and he intentionally words his rhetorical questions in a stupid manner. He can't understand why anyone would pay for a smartphone and/or data usage, despite being given dozens and dozens of reasons both in this thread and in the last one.

Ok let me rephrase it..

Is it worth $1200 in just DATA (not phone costs or minutes) charges per year for a family of four to have smartphones OR is it a waste of money because you already have an Internet connection and could pay much less with phones that had no data contract?

$25 x 4 x 12 = $1200 for those with lower data rates.

or

$30 x 4 x 12= $1440 for those paying ATT rates

Discuss.

smart phone uses:

replace GPS with live traffic updates: $200
replace home phone: $30/month
replace dumb phone: $10/month
replace basic camera: $100
replace laptop data when not near wifi: $45/month
PDA/calendar reminders (sorry, dump phone calendars suck too much to be of any use): $50/month
piss you off: priceless
so the sum is $300 + $95/month, but I only pay $30/month + the device itself

I agree that post-paid plans are way over-priced, but you can't just say you don't like big screens yet you need to replace your phone with a laptop for skype

why does a family of 4 each need their own smartphone? - maybe the issue is parents shouldn't be buying their kids too many toys, if each person works and buys their own, then the problem is solved

GPS does not cost $200 and they last a lifetime
Home phone does not cost $30

My phone has a calander AND reminders big whoop.
I don't need data away from wifi
Cell phone cameras suck in comparison to regular cameras.

Oh lets say teens.
find me a GPS that has live traffic updates and costs less then $200, and also a home phone line that costs less then $30/month without being in some sort of crap bundle - also they only last until they stop receiving support and/or are stolen

being punctual and remembering things is important to some people.. hell people carried PDA's and address books at some point

yes cell hone cameras suck in comparison to regular cameras, but 90% of the time they are sufficient, and 90% of the time you don't have your regular camera with you - plus it's an extra device in your pocket, and then you need spare batteries

you don't need data away from wifi? I suppose that works if all you do is stay at home all day

teens can get a job and buy their own phones just fine...

how about comparing to a pre-paid no-data plan since you don't want/need mobile data? - buying something you don't use and then complaining about the price doesn't make a lot of sense to me

I have wi-fi at home and work and just about anywhere but I don't use my laptop while driving!

My COX phone costs maybe $12... I also pay for Cable Internet, TV

Again my phone has a great calendar with appointment reminders even a steps calculator with calories burnt and a sucky camera just like yours.

BTW the garmins do better than Androids sucky gps

And yet... no one actually pays the rates you're talking about, but you can't seem to let those numbers go!

If you can pull numbers out of your ass and make them apply to everyone whether it's realistic or not, why can't slapshot136?

sorry, that GPS doesn't have recent maps.. unlike a smartphone GPS that won't get out-dated maps (and the maps on it are already out-dated, notice how amazon says that it's an older model? guess what, off-contract old smartphones also go down in value rather fast, since they are also tech items.. - and even if you do get the lifetime maps (and bluetooth, what smartphone doesn't have bluetooth), you still have to manually update the maps by plugging it into your computer)

cheapest non-promotion price is $32 for local AND long-distance calling, $25 on a promotion, but that involves you calling in each 6 months to get a promotion

still didn't answer what phone you have/use, but do you have to send a data message with the picture to someone since you can't download it via a usb cable and/or bluetooth?

Garmin updates 4 times a year and is a lot more accurate than Abndroids

if it's anything like your spelling, I wouldn't want it - you still have to manually perform the update by going to garmin's website, installing their little program, saying no you don't want the crapware toolbar, uninstalling their program, and then repeating the process every 3 months

price of lifetime maps? $90

Big whoop things don't change that fast and Garmins maps and POI's are far superior to any cell phone GPS

And Google Maps has always been pretty frigan accurate for me. Accurate enough, at least, that I'm comfortable using it all the time as my regular GPS.
