Looking for your $.02

Looking for opinions:

If you have a specific skill or trade do you feel it's okay with charging immediate family members for your labor/time. For example, if you are a mechanic, would you charge your son or daughter, father or mother for your labor? Or do you feel like since they're your family (and let's of course say for arguments sake that everyone likes each other and has a good relationship of course Wink) you should give your help where you're able to and leave it up to the person on the receiving end to give if they should feel inclined?

I was being sarcastic dear...since that is what several have implied in this thread...that my logic of thinking a family member should offer THEIR LABOR as a gift of love is so far fetched.
Turning wrenches and busting knuckles on hands covered in grease is not a gift of love, it is work.

If you want a gift of love from your dad ask him for a hug.

If he didn't ask for money for his time I would MOST CERTAINLY offer something...helping him around the house, in his garden...
1. You wanted people to agree with you to help you feel better about being a bad person.

2. How very quid pro quo. So until or unless someone does you a favor you don't owe anyone anything. Got it. Thumbup

3. No one owes you anything at this stage of your life. Especially not your parents. Grow up!

Iagree

We just spent the evening figuring out where a wiring problem was at my FIL's - this after the electric company replaced all the meter's on the homes in our area yesterday. My FIL waited until 4:30pm today to tell me that half the power was out in his home Doh Yes, the electric company is closed by that time; so I had to put in an emergency call to them. They finally come out to check the two new meters (his home has two) and determine one is bad. They send out another person to replace said meter, this person refuses. Original person replaces bad meter with an older style; still no power to half the house. He then checks the breaker panel, and finds there is voltage, and puts the original meter back on. He then explains to my husband that when the new meters are installed, many times they tend to "blow" something in the household, such as a wire nut that is installed somewhere in the home in a wall OMG And, he tells us just to get an electrician out will be around $80 to $100 before they even begin to figure out what is wrong.

So my husband and I thank the man from the electric company; and say we will figure this out, as we know what has been installed recently and will start from there. It's going to be a long freaking process to go item by item, to find what "blew". We finally did figure it out; it was a switch in the kitchen.

But I'd like to know from OP, with the going rate of "Electrician's" what should we charge my FIL for this job, considering the rate they charge; and the time we consumed for this Scratchchin After all, it's not my husband's primary type of work, although he was able to do this and find and fix the problem. $500 sound about right to you OP Scratchchin Or should we have called in an Electrician and had my FIL charged out the wazoo instead Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

See, it's all about what we can do for him, not what he can do for us at this point in his life; getting it yet????????????????????????????????????

Bunny you are so correct about "Turning wrenches and busting knuckles on hands covered in grease is not a gift of love, it is work." Many people just don't get it, sigh.

It's 8:40pm, my husband is finally taking a shower after getting all this done, after a day of work; and now I'll make us dinner Wave What did OP do for her father today Ermm

I thought he could use it to join me and Alvy with the $5 bet, and maybe buy a pair of shoes at Nordstrom's Sadwalk

Charging them is the smart move and will prevent them from taking advantage of your generosity, but in the end, this is an individual choice. Make no mistake though: If you do it once for free, they will expect it free every time (unless you have made some sort of explicit agreement to the contrary).

1. Did he charge you the full going rate for labor and time?
2. Did he have to pay for parts?
3. Could it be that he is fearful that you might take care of him when he can't care for himself and is saving to make other arrangements so that he can have peace?

I do not know you. Never had a conversation with you. Don't frequent the DS forums anymore. My perception of you is based solely on this forum. In the interest of not being banned from SD, I will keep my perception to myself.
