New car shopping :whee:

41,172 2,080 June 9, 2012 at 05:23 PM in Autos
There is at most a 50/50 chance we'll buy something this year, but we hadn't driven any new cars in almost five years so we thought we'd check some out.

Wife drives an '08 VW Eos - that's the car we would replace. Shockingly, it has been a very reliable car, and has only 36k miles on it. So we're in no hurry to sell it. But we decided to drive a couple of cars today, just for kicks: an Infiniti G37 and a Lexus IS350 and IS250. As expected the Lexus was a bit more sedate, but more fun than to drive than expected. Wife prefers the IS350 to the G37...

We would most likely buy a late model used, around a '10 model. I love my '06 TL and so does my wife, so we would also drive an Acura before making any decision (though we're not driving the new butt-ugly TL - it would be a TSX, or even the new ILX if we bought new).

What other comparable cars should we try?

They are doomed for failure. If they were priced 5k cheaper they'd be a hit but who'd get one with the mustang/camaros being priced the same which are much better cars than the ft86/brz.
They are not marketed at the same people that the V6 Camaro and Mustang are marketed at. I think it will be a fairly successful car.

Huh
Wife doesn't care for the previous RDX, though the new style looks better (and is out of our price range). I think for an X3 (definitely an option), we'd be looking an an '06-08, depending on mileage. She doesn't like any Hyundai models, and I don't think I could buy a GM product, though I'd consider Ford (but not an Edge...wtf?).
I was not messing with you....why would you say that?? Sadwalk

A new candidate... '08 Infiniti EX35.
Wife liked driving it...exterior style is probably "meh" at best

Good luck MLV! Sounds like fun! woot

On another note... how they heck do you guys remember models of cars when they're just a series of letters and numbers? laugh out loud I can never remember those. Crazy
I agree. I think they started this trend to make it sound more like the high end sports/racing cars, which have used numbers for much longer. Just a guess though.

Yeah, I know. I just think it's SO BORING to name cars with letters and numbers.

We can't have exhausted the animal names yet. Those are way cool! Like Mustang and Sting Ray and Impala and Ram and Bronco and Cougar and Jaguar, etc.

What's wrong with those?! What about Lion? Or Tiger? Or Wildebeest? Or Giraffe? I don't think those are taken yet. Just SOMETHING other than just numbers.
Lions and Tigers and Bears! Oh my!

And yeah...the letters/numbers are boring IMO.

Yawn

Hermit crab?
Naked mole rat?
Butterfly?
Quote from Maleficent :
I don't think crab or rat would be very popular. LMAO

How about Panda? People freakin' love Pandas. Butterflies would be good, too. laugh out loud
They would be in China. nod (year of the rat, year of the crab, etc.)

Looks like we're going to wait on the new car. Decided I don't want to drain my cash and/or take out a loan. So my wife will stick with the VW for a while.
Look at me! I have cash!

I think gnu would be a great name. Then it would never be old!

Yeah, I have an X5 and a Murano. Despite only having 10-20 more horsepower, the X5 feels much more powerful than the Murano. I guess it's the gearing and ECU programming. When I depress the gas pedal on the X5, you can feel it go. On the Murano, it's like it doesn't want to do anything.laugh out loud
What year model Murano do you have? I have an '04 and it has lots of get up and go. I go look at new cars and I still just like my Murano, so I keep putting of buying a new one.

I have an '06. It's our daily commuter. Knock on wood, it's been a fairly reliable car for us. However, since it has documented CVT tranny issues (Nissan did extend the warranty on the transmission to 120k miles though), we're planning on getting rid of it since we'll be approaching that mark in about a year or two. We plan on getting a Prius in the next few months and trading in the Murano.....just thinking about it though.

Any tranny issues with your '04?

No, as a matter of fact, we just had it checked out and the mechanic said everything looks good (again, knock on wood) laugh out loud

Have you checked out the new Cabriole? It's the new convertible Murano. It's so kinda fins, but it should be at $42,000! EEK!

I like the new Murano (regular SUV version). Looks nice and more updated in styling. But, we wouldn't go with it again since we already have another SUV (an X5) and now want to get a "greener", more fuel-efficient car for our daily commuter.

Do you know anyone that had issues with the CVT tranny? I think there were more issues with the earlier models like pre-2005. And, that's why Nissan extended the warranty for the CVT for all the cars.

No, I haven't, but I know that there were some issues. I'm just hoping that ours isn't among those with problems. I love the car. I use it for work (I'm a decorator) and the amount of room in it is amazing! I can get 11' trim boards, huge rugs and my 7' ladder in it. I've even gotten 6 dining chairs in the thing!

The new little Fiats are really cool! How much room do you need?
