You threw away what?!

237 50 June 21, 2012 at 05:05 PM in Finance
I decided to put my log book on this forum so you can all see the crazy amount of free stuff in good condition that I find while walking my dogs at night in NYC. My girlfriend and I recently moved into a new apartment on the Upper East Side and we had been noticing how much brand new (or antique) stuff is left out on the curb.

So for fun (and because we are both as cheap as they come), we started grabbing stuff that is in good condition. Either we use it, try to sell it, or give it away.

Oh, and keep in mind, bottles and cans have a $0.05 deposit on them so we return those.

We just started keeping track, here is what we have so far:

6/18 - 18 books, 1 milk crate, 4 deposit cans ($0.20)
6/19 - Aero-Swiss Humidifier (Valued over $100), Keurig Coffee Machine ($120), Small Dust Buster, Best Fitness Leg Developer (Over $100), 11 deposit cans ($0.55)
6/20 - 7 deposit cans ($0.35)
6/21 - 37 bottle deposit cans (took the dogs on a long walk this afternoon) ($1.85)

That's the last four days, I'll update this as we get new finds.

Anyone else do this either out of necessity or as a hobby?

Stephen

Sorry we haven't given much in terms of updates the last few days. It seems like the extreme heat may have slowed down people's motivation to get rid of stuff. The last two garbage nights were a bit of a let down, but we have high hopes for tomorrow, especially since it should be a high rental apartment turnover day.

We also took a bit of a break because yesterday was Chelsea's birthday, so I was busy doing my job of making it the most special day of her year. We did a bunch of fun stuff and got to go out of the city and do some swimming yesterday. I did some cleaning out of my grandmother's attic and had a pretty interesting fine. I'm working on the post about that (as she told me she found it at a garage sale like 10 years ago so I'm going to count it as her dumpster diving -- apparently both of my grandmothers are of the thrifty persuasion). Hopefully I can post that tomorrow.

Here are the random things we've taken in since my last post. We actually needed all three of these items: a mixer (Black and Decker, works perfectly), a frying pan that will work great for stir fry, and a pitcher (which we have really needed given that our sinks only put out boiling hot water... not good for drinking on a hot day).

Until tomorrow,

Stephen

Breaking Garbage News!

It's a great one out there tonight. Chelsea and I went out to get a snack and were overwhelmed! Here is a picture of her with the pile from just ONE building. It's about 150 feet long and 15 feet wide. She is 6' tall to give you an idea of scale.

We have been needing a coffee table and the garvage gods had our backs yet again. The only problem with this little piece was that it was missing the glass... Well, luckily I have a side table that I inherited from my grandfather's estate that had a piece of glass on it that I didn't really think fit with the antique look of the table (Second Picture is the table after I took the glass off of those four pegs).

I remembered that when we were outside and we decided to take a gamble and carry it back and up the stairs. It fit almost perfectly!!

I just wanted to post a quick update before I go back out there and see what is going on. Chelsea is writing an essay for her summer class so I will be going out solo and without the pups (they already had their pee tonight). She is usually the voice of reason that says "do we really need that _______?" that i'm so excited about... until I actually realize we probably don't need it.

I'll post when I get back!

Very jealous! Those are some great finds!

BTW, you were talking the other day about items that were perfectly good but that you didn't need and didn't have room for to store long term. How about taking those items to a battered woman's shelter or charity shop? It would save items from the landfill and give someone who is starting over with nothing a few things to help with their new life. When a woman leaves an abusive spouse or boyfriend, she often leaves with just the clothes on her back.

Welcome to our city!! I PMed you my number -- you can program that in your phone and if you have any questions or whatever, just give me a call. I'm not working right now, so I'm around.

Thanks Zoe!

We actually do have on our agenda to donate items to charity, something like housing works (AIDS organization), goodwill or salvation army. I'd be more than happy to share the wealth to an organization like that though. The only problem is that we don't have a car here and carry everything ourselves -- to store it means bringing it up 85 stairs to our apt and then back down 85 stairs and onto public transport to wherever it is going to go. Those organizations only do pickups when you have a lot of good stuff to get rid of at once unfortunately
