Meeting people from the innerwebz

10,953 434 July 28, 2012 at 06:48 PM in Question
Has anyone ever met anyone they only know from online? How was it? Awkward? Fun? Unexpected? Interesting?

How would you feel about someone you've only talked to online and on the phone staying with you the first time you met them?

Someone I have been chatting with online/on the phone for 6 years is coming to town and staying with me for 3 days. I feel like I know her well online, but I'm not sure how I feel about her staying with me for 3 days. I'm excited about it, but apprehensive at the same time. It doesn't help that I have a touch of social anxiety to begin with. Then you hear horror stories about people who you thought you knew online being false. Thoughts? Is this unwise? Experiences?

There is some lingering talk of 4-5 people from the Gamer's Lounge meeting up at PAX East next year. Should be fun if we can make it work.
I went to PAX East the first two years it was in Boston. It was farking insane! I hope they got a bigger space because there was not enough room for all the people who had legit passes, nevermind everyone who wanted to go. It was a hell of a good time, though. Be prepared for long lines at the popular exhibits. In 2010 we waited about 30 minutes to get our hands on the 3DS for example. And my buddy waited a LONG time for the SWTOR exhibit.

I'm not sure how much waiting around I would do. Maybe just walk around, look at stuff, try to get free junk, people-watch, etc. I use to work at that convention center and I know how huge it is, but I have never seen it that full. Should be fun!

Are you talking about the Heinz convention center? Or did they move it? There was talk of that for this year but I wasn't going so I didn't pay very close attention. Plus it happened on Easter Sunday so there may have been lower attendance.

There wasn't as much swag as I'd hoped for either of the years I went. It was harder to coax the good stuff out of the vendors too. They wall wanted you to sign up for mailing lists and most of them had raffles instead of straight giveaways. So you had to hang around when they were doing the drawing which was pretty annoying.

The first year I went they had these Sumi beanbags out everywhere in the halls - those things were SO freakin' comfortable! We had 3-day passes & I'm not a HUGE gamer so I spent a considerable amount of time on the beanbags, people-watching, while my buddies played in Halo tournaments or tried out L4D2. You should've seen the line for the Magic tournament! Faint

I think Wil Wheaton spoke at that one too but we missed out by a long mile on getting into the auditorium. We sat in on one panel which included MC Frontalot and I got a picture of him which was cool. He's a funny guy.

I'd go again but not for the whole 3 days. Hotels are expensive in Boston! If I had a buddy to stay with it would be a little easier I think.

I think it is at the BCEC now, which is pretty easy to get to from the T if I recall. I only live about ~40 mins. from Boston so that makes it a lot cheaper to attend.

I met my husband through myspace. After talking online and over the phone for a few months I bought plane tickets to visit him for a weekend. We decided we were getting married that weekend. laugh out loud

I've met friends and other people from online. Usually it is strange to meld worlds together, especially if you know them well from a forum. But after the weirdness fades, its fun!

I've met Andy (w3kn) and I've met a lot of people from the old Buffalo Sabres forum IRL. I tend to try to go not alone, except when I met Andy, his wife, and darling baby girl. They aren't (that) scary. laugh out loud

We should meet some time. I could provide a reference to prove I'm mostly sane from my current guest.
