(NO OT) - DIY: Inexpensive Bracket for Anyone w/Radar Detector, GPS, Scan Tool or Anything Windshield Mounted

10,827 3,722 September 12, 2012 at 01:31 PM in Autos
I wasn't sure where to post this since there is no DIY or How To section on SD but I've posted this 'deal' on many automotive forums that I'm on and it's always been well received. Mods: If there is someplace where this fits better feel free to relocate it there. SD needs a DIY sub-section maybe?

I made a bracket for my radar detector to mount to the rear view mirror rather than the stupid windshield brackets w/suction cups. This same device can be used for a wide variety of things such as GPS devices or engine monitor readouts. The cost is anywhere from free to $2.50 depending on if you ride bicycles or not. It's a simple seat post reflector with the reflector removed. Most have these in their garage and if not you can get them at your local bicycle shop for a few bucks at most. When I went to mine they gave me handfuls of them of various sizes for free just for asking. You will also need a small bolt with a matching washer & nut to attach the factory bracket to it. There are a couple sizes so pick based on the thickness of your mirror stem then use padded tape to make up the difference. Pretty simple actually.

I figured this is a perfect post for those Slickdealers like me who think $90 or even $35 is WAY to much for a simple mirror bracket mount.

Enjoy!

Weird. I know if you click on one of my posts from another thread it will let you there. Must be because this got moved to the Lounge for some reason. Guess I won't bother sharing my ideas with the community anymore in hopes of earning some rep points. It's just easier to not waste my time.
Thanks Slickdeals!

Just stumbled on this and will try executing it today. Going to bike shop to buy a couple of these mounts. Thanks for sharing.

the only problem with this idea is the lack of easy removal / installation for security.

This is not the proper set up for radar detectors. Police aim radar at your head lights. Mounting it high near your mirror gives you a higher chance if missing the signals and getting a ticket. You'd know this if you read the instructions that Came with your unit.

If you're getting this for GPS then never mind

Mounting mine high in a dozen vehicles has worked fine for me.for decades. I don't know about ideal (I'm sure mounting it to the front bumper would yield the best performance but we have to make concessions in order to make having one less obtrusive) but zero tickets for me & plenty of advance notice each time.

That being said, no reason to turn this into a radar detector debate. This thread is quite obviously about something else.

Only laser is precise enough to be aimed. Radar, X, K, Ka can not be aimed at a part of the vehicle. It is usually aimed in the general direction of the vehicle.

Edit: Escort SmartRadar instructions have it mounted behind the rear view mirror (it has no display screen) to tap into the power supplied to most mirrors these days.

from the pic, the hard part seems to be making the end that attaches to a device. Also, it doesn't seem to be quickly detachable, which might be important for states that don't allow radar detector.
Use a wingnut instead if you want to easily remove it by hand. Not instantly like magnetic or grip style for sure.

I love DIY ideas, especialy one that looks this clean. I just wouldn't mount a GPS this high up. Great idea though I can see using this for a bike mount.
