Tire mounting

39,439 5,562 September 24, 2012 at 09:05 AM in Autos
I got in on the DTD deal a couple weeks ago as my car will need new tires by the winter. So now I have 4 tires sitting in my garage waiting to be installed.

I'm looking for a place to mount/balance them and to my surprise, a couple shops have refused. Their excuse is "if we tear it, then we owe you a new tire" .... Uh OK. I understand that some shops could refuse on principle (e.g. they want you to buy the tires from them for profit), but work is work - if it takes a tech 1 hour to mount and balance 4 tires and you pay him $20 and charge $100 - that's $80 in your pocket. I'm also looking for a 4 wheel alignment, which is pure profit. I can understand perhaps turning down this business when your shop is packed (better to sell tires at a profit, too), but why do it when you're not busy?

Has anyone seen this excuse before?

That is so ridiculous that its not even funny. So you buy a brand new car in California and move to Chicago and now the Chevy dealer refuses to service it? that makes sense because?? Guess what, that shop just lost a customer for life.

I get the warranty on parts, since you didn't buy it from them but to place it?

discount tires rotate and balance tires/wheel all the time even if you didnt buy the tires from them. its cheaper for me to balance them there than to go back to the dealer where i bought my car.

if that was the case then jiffy lube, midas, car RX, etc would be out of business

Dealership's have the right to refusal for service on any vehicle that was not purchased from them, or were you not aware of that? I know someone who this personally happened to where they bought the vehicle a couple of counties away from where we live; and took it back to a local Dealership where they live "here" - and the Dealership refused to service "said vehicle" because it was not purchased there - and told them to take it back to where they purchased it. Hard to believe isn't it OMG OMG

After 35+ years in the business, we have seen just about everything LMAO

Why the hell would you want to buy a part someplace else, have a shop that didn't sell it to you install it....part goes bad or is defective....then you fark around with getting that part back to where you purchased it....then go back to the shop and have it redone? Please.
Dealer parts can be crazy expensive. And often they're just the same, cheaper part but with the dealer name on it.

Or they are "Jobber Parts" where they call around to get the best prices - depending on where you get your vehicle fixed - and even with Dealerships - they don't necessarily put OEM parts on vehicles - they too may be out of a part - and will call an Automotive Parts Warehouse to bring a part in nod

Yeah, I'm under warranty so it's all good. The wheel weights wasn't warranty but I'm not trusting some random parts or shop to put them on correctly.

Did you complain to the Management Mad

They should have cooked it for you, for gawd's sake,
you provided your own steak, the least they could do
is cook it for you, after all, they are only paying the
labor for the Chef to cook it Ranting

Then if you ended up with EColi, you could sue them Bleh

I once had a shop install a sensor I couldn't reach. A lift was essential.

They did it for the standard time charge, and tacked on an absurd fee for lost profit on part or something like that. Awesome!

Just take your tires to the local high school shop. At least around here supervision is top notch, equipment is leading edge and the kids are enthusiastic to help. Bring your own parts and no charge to install!

To clarify, I meant OEM dealer parts. People may not realize various OEM parts are just a different part with the OEM/car maker label on it.

Like,
"I paid $40 extra to get an OEM serpentine belt so I know it's good."
"That's great, but that belt is just a Gates belt with an OEM sticker on it."
