Anyone following the Carnival Triumph cruise ship story?

41,164 2,080 February 13, 2013 at 07:32 AM in Travel & Vacations (3)
Carnival Triumph engine fire; lost power; tug boats pulling it to Mobile, AL.

linly [cbslocal.com]

The 500 or so McDonald's franchisees and executives onboard should at least be used to the conditions if they've spent much time in one of their restaurants.

We cruise on Carnival 5 months from today! laugh out loud (different ship though)

When I read stories like this, I have to wonder about the ships design & maintenance procedures. I mean, how hard is it to have a working fire suppression system and a backup generator capable of powering ship ballast and plumbing (unless they have multiple engine/generators already)? I used to design and build electric power plants, and I'm thinking that somebody proverbially missed the boat on this one. I suspect cost cutting was more important than designing and maintaining a more reliable system.

Largest naked cruise in history set to sail

http://www2.macleans.ca/2013/02/0...-set-sail/

Sometime in the late afternoon on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013 — an hour or so after the cruise ship Carnival Freedom leaves its home port of Fort Lauderdale, Florida — the ship's captain will make an announcement on the ship's public address system.

The captain's message will go something like this:

"Ladies and gentlemen, we are now in international waters. Please feel free to disrobe."

You don't have to go to international waters to be on a boat and see neked people.

Notice that was from 2004. There is now another nude beach about an hour East of Galveston. Oddly enough, it is very close to a state park. OMG

Carnival didn't design the ship. It was designed and built by Fincantieri in Italy.

I'm not saying I agree with it (if it's true), but what's worse, tax payers paying for a rescue after an accident (which is no different than fire and police service to your house, coast guard rescuing people, etc.), or tax payers paying for people that don't want to work and have baby after baby, or paying for people that are in the country illegally, or paying to house and defend criminals, etc?

I think right now it's not known if they're charge Carnival for the tow or not.

Oh please. Spin it anyway you want but it isn't like carnival has a big part in this. My dh is in a similar line of work as zzyzzx. Customers want you to half ass do stuff all the time to save them $$.

I did not blame any specific company in my post.

True. It does look like Carnival went cheap (with design and back-up systems). Some design flaws that come to light when the engines were damaged by fire.

I think it is the right time to talk about it, especially when Carnival company was quick to hand out $500 refund to people on the ship to shut them up! Why not talk about their towing bill?

I also get what you are saying about tax payers picking up tabs on people who dont want to work.. So I guess next time my car breaks down Instead of calling AAA and paying them I should just charge the tax payers? After all they would be rescuing me from being stranded on the road?
