Anyone following the Carnival Triumph cruise ship story?

Carnival Triumph engine fire; lost power; tug boats pulling it to Mobile, AL.

linly [cbslocal.com]

The 500 or so McDonald's franchisees and executives onboard should at least be used to the conditions if they've spent much time in one of their restaurants.

We cruise on Carnival 5 months from today! laugh out loud (different ship though)

Carnival has had a poor couple of years. I'm suprised I haven't heard more about last years disaster more. They must have friends in the big media.
Are you referring to the engine fire on Splendour in 2010? That's the last big event on a Carnival-branded ship that I'm aware of. If you're talking about the Costa Concordia, I think that was pretty thoroughly covered in the media.

I think it's awful they're putting these poor people on buses. Mobile does have an airport. They are taking the cheap way out, and the customers should be treated better. Just my opinion, and I realize I'm a little prissy, but I doubt any of the carnival executives would get on a bus after this cruise from hell. I just think after all that to put these people on a bus is horrible.
How would they get 3,143 airline seats on short notice? Do think the airlines are going to call in off duty pilots and planes that are down for maintenance and add flights for these people?
You sound just like all the people (mainly girls, it seems!) on yahoo comments that said it's stupid that they couldn't send another cruise ship to pick up all these people when they were out at sea. And they said the same thing...that they're trying to save money. You have to think logically, not emotionally.

I wonder if and how the end of the cruise staff tipping was addressed. I'd like to think that I would tip. A full refund, credit for future cruise, $500, and transportation to be able to return home. In addition, although the passengers shouldn't have wrote messages on bed sheets and towels as banners for the media or wore ship provided bath robes off the ship, I hope Carnival doesn't audit them.
Actually they're offering more than that.

Late Wednesday Carnival Cruise Lines announced that all guests on the current Carnival Triumph voyage will receive further compensation of $500 per person.

As previously announced, all 3,143 guests on board will receive a full refund of the cruise along with transportation expenses and reimbursement of all shipboard purchases during the voyage, with the exception of gift shop, art purchases and casino charges. All passengers will also receive a future cruise credit equal to the amount paid for this voyage.
Even minus those exceptions, there are a lot of things people could have spent money on on the ship.

Passengers fleeing the crippled cruise liner Carnival Triumph aboard a charter bus to New Orleans found themselves stuck -- again -- when the bus taking them from Mobile, Alabama, broke down Friday morning on the side of the highway.

"You wouldn't think after the ship nightmare, that on the bus ride to New Orleans, the bus would break down," Carnival passenger Jacob Combs said Friday, after the bus finally arrived in New Orleans.
That's just bad luck!!

The cruise line said it would give each passenger $500, a free flight home, a full refund for their trip and for most expenses on board, as well as a credit for another cruise.
It sucks that they have to take a bus out of town, but at least they are actually offering people a flight home after that. I don't understand why they are shipping people out of town first, but I haven't really been following closely.

This article [cnn.com] seems pretty informative.

That's why I'll never set foot on a cruise ship.

That is nice, free paid drinks, spa services, internet use before the outage, etc. if they charged for them Depending on the individuals, they may not had came ahead due to lost income from the extra days away from their employment.

Ah that's funny and sad. At least it was only a 45 minute delay on top of the ~2 hour drive. I imagine many just wanted to get home ASAP and the airport in New Orleans is the nearest one with the most available on-going flights. Judging from the departing flight schedule at http://www.mobairport.com/ many did take up the Carnival for their reimbursed meal and lodging offer last night. The airport's last departing flights are before 7pm which was before the passengers disembarked.

ABC News just reported that... Tax payers will be billed for the towing the ship, NOT the cruise company! WTF is that all about????
