Anyone following the Carnival Triumph cruise ship story?

41,164 2,080 February 13, 2013 at 07:32 AM in Travel & Vacations (3)
Carnival Triumph engine fire; lost power; tug boats pulling it to Mobile, AL.

linly [cbslocal.com]

The 500 or so McDonald's franchisees and executives onboard should at least be used to the conditions if they've spent much time in one of their restaurants.

We cruise on Carnival 5 months from today! laugh out loud (different ship though)

For me the boat got real boring real fast, the food was not what I'm used to eating, the room was way smaller than I'm used to , and you spend too much time coming and going and not enough time in port.

I thought the shows were cheesy. We went to a couple and the gave up on them!

Totally agreed!
"coming and going"...you mean cruising?
None of these comments do anyone much good without knowing what cruise you were on. Why not tell which boat, cruise length, and when?

I guess that's the difference then. This was a work thing and they went cheap on the cruise. It definitely had that party atmosphere for the adults (saw a lot of drunks and one brawl) and the kids who were on board were allowed to run wild with no parental supervision. There weren't any extra fee restaurants at all, just one bar, a tiny casino, one gift shop, an overpriced spa and one really bad show for the entire trip.
Not only those things, but the shorter, cheaper cruises on average draw a much different groups of passengers than the longer, more expensive cruises. I've experienced it somewhat on a 5 day cruise and know someone who got an even bigger dose of it on a 4 day cruise out of New Orleans. If I paid for a cheaper cruise, I would expect there to be less to do, the ship to be not as nice, etc, but it's the typical passenger that I can't deal with. Do a 7 day cruise and you'll be fine. Go on a ship that's at least 90,000 gross tons.
What ship and cruise length were you on?

Yeah, I'm claustrophobic so having a small inside cabin with no window didn't help matters any. I'd rather fly to the destination and spend more time there, rather than being stuck on a boat watching nothing but water for three of the four days. I took a book to read but the deck area was so noisy with all the kids and drunk (or just rude) adults, that I couldn't focus on the book.
Get a balcony cabin. On any decent size ship these days, they're all roomy.

For most people cruising is the main point of, well, cruising. The ports are a plus. Some people don't even get off at some ports (and some don't at any). I've skipped a port before. Yeah the problem is you were on a cheap 4 day cruise. If you're not on a nice ship, with decent people, you're not going to have fun on the cruise portion. Don't go cheap.

I just think that it all varies all the time, even within the same cruise line.

Like the NCL Star - they had arts and crafts every day, and we went to almost every one of them. I really appreciated that! But it might have been the highlight of that ship (the ports were the main highlight of the trip, of course).

I know even though my mom enjoyed her last NCL cruise this year, she said she definitely likes the entertainment and shows on Carnival more. She said she would get bored at night on the NCL cruise, and didn't on Carnival in the past.

And when I went on the Carnival Triumph I didn't have nearly the same experience as these folks did Faint It was one of my favorite cruises! The cruise director [at the time] was the best I've seen on a ship yet.
It was probably Jen Baxter, a red haired British girl. She was our CD on the Triumph in 2010, and was still the CD during the recent trip from hell. She was great.

Oh, no it was John Heald - after someone else asked in the thread I went googling to find out.

I was reading on the Cruise Critic forums last night to see what people there think of the original topic. Roll I need to go finish reading those threads.

It was crazy how many threads were started about Triumph on Cruise Critic. I'm glad it's getting back to normal - I spend some time on there when I have a cruise booked.

Oh, OK. Must have been quite awhile ago. It's been about 10 years since John was CD on the Triumph, hasn't it? He was also CD on the Splendor when it caught on fire.

Nice come backs. You sound like my 8 year old nephew.

You can say cruises blow all you want, but regardless of your 7000+ posts here (I'm sure they're all excellent posts), I don't think anyone here is really putting any credibility in your statements, considering your posting manner, and the fact that you went so long ago, you don't really remember it, and you won't tell us what cruise it was on.

I've already told you why I don't like them. You just don't listen.
