Heading off to College, What do I need?

4,324 1,198 May 7, 2013 at 12:40 PM in Chat
Alright, so this upcoming fall, I will be heading off to college and I have a basic idea of what to take.... I assume some of the people here attended college Smilie and I would like some input on what else I would need.... Here is a basic list of what I plan on taking:

-Desktop
-Laptop
-iPad
-Printer
-10 pairs of shorts/t-shirts
-2 pairs of fancy clothes
-mini fridge
-microwave
-Chair (the one provided by the college looks like a POS)
-futon (maybe)
-pencils/pens/markers/etc....
-Quarters
-Sandals/Flip Folps
-Lamp
-Towels
-Powerbag backpack
-Headphones
-Hot Plate (not sure what for....)
-hangers

I figure if I can have a comprehensive list, I can start buying them as I find deals on them. Iam not really picky on most of the stuff. The ones I care about, I already have (desktop and laptop). The rest is basic.

People seriously don't write notes in class lectures anymore?
What happens when you lose battery or get the blue screen of death in the middle of class?
How do you do graphs/diagrams quickly?

Yea, I'm an old fart, but would a laptop even make it through a semester of hauling to class everyday without getting broken or stolen?

Anyhow.. pack as light as possible.. I would only bring one computer (laptop).. you aren't going to need serious computing power.. In fact, please don't waste your college years on the computer/online..There's so much to do at college. Get out and do something. Use the laptop for homework only.. If you leave the desktop at home, you'll have more room at the desk to do homework, spread out books, etc..

Microwave? It depends.. There might be one in the dorm common area..
It is nice to have a mini fridge, as food will get stolen out of the common fridge.
I take all my notes on my laptop itself. I have various apps where I can just sketch a pie chart or whatever on the iPad and save it straight onto my Mac. The reason I need my desktop is that I need it to trade efficiently. Without it, I won't have a source of income.

http://www.amazon.com/Sunbeam-613...B000C3QSPQ great for ramen
plates, bowls, cups, silverware (1 or 2 each, wash immediately after using)
dish soap that you can also use as hand soap
water bottle

Things for dealing with your roommate:
Noise Cancelling Headphones
Book light (unless you do all your reading on your ipad)
air freshener
or the other route:
speakers
air horn

box fan or oscillating
alarm clock

workout clothes/sports equipment

I notice you didn't list TV. That's fine if TV is not your thing.

Colored folders. They're better than binders. I used the accordian style, they're like a quarter inch thick collapsed.
Index cards
backpack that can hold your laptop and books
laundry bag or basket
a suit for interviews
security locks for your devices

A. I hate ramen. I will eat nearly anything but ramen.
B. My monitor has a HDMI so I can watch TV on it, however, currently, I watch 2-3 shows but I have season passes through iTunes so I don't watch TV at all, if I do, it's about an hour a week.
C. Added some of the stuff to the list.

Headphones/Speakers
Fork/knive/spoon/plate/bowl. (swipe them from your local dining hall.)
Xbox/wii/ps3/ps4
booze
a hot plate (hide it when they do fire inspections)
leave your hs logo clothings at home.
PArent's credit card.
hangers
laundry basket
I prefer use and throw utensils. Why a hot plate? I have only ONE shirt with my HS logo. I'd rather have my credit card than my parent's. Added some stuff to list.

Stop by SPAHP office of the dean and say :howdy: once you get to campus. It is an awesome school with a tremendous sense of family.

True dat...hefty price tag. Congrats OP on choosing a good education...and a butt load of debt.
Ran into the Dean at a panel Creighton was hosting. Seems like a great guy. It's only costing me $1200ish a semester, so no debt when I graduate. Financial Aid/Scholarships covered most of it.

He truly is quite possibly the best dean around. Right now he is the interim VP for Academic Affairs for the University as a whole. Once the provost comes on board this summer he'll be back as dean of the school. We miss him tremendously.

What do you plan on studying?

BTW, I'm sending my oldest off to KCMO to a Jesuit University in the fall. I am more than happy to share what we are prepping with.

I wasn't aware there was a correlation between one's ball size and their sandwich making ability...

You give us New Yorkers a bad name...

I plan on majoring in Finance. Its not that big of a deal if I forgot to take something since Creighton is just 1/2 an hour away from my house.

The dorms are really big compared to most of the other colleges. There is room for a pair of futons actually, but it would cramp up the room.... I need a desktop in my room for serious computing power, and my laptop for notes in class. I can fit 3 monitors on the desk I was given so I will downgrade from my Eyefinity 6 setup to Eyefinity 3.

Or upgrade to nine displays if you can afford it.....

If you're in a dorm, somebody else is paying for the heating, cooling and electricity of your place (yes, technically you pay it in the fees, but whether you use 50 kw per month or 5,000 kw, it won't cost you a dime more. Enjoy it while you can....

If I didn't have to pay for heating or cooling, there wouldn't be too many limits on my computing.

Also, what are you majoring in? Do Math or Engineering (seriously).... don't do liberal arts, business (depends), or education. Math, engineering.... the classes will suck and you will have to study more than your peers, but you have to decide if you're there for an education or to party and have fun. If you're there for fun, save the tuition and fees and don't go to college.
