Is 9 1/2 too young for a phone for basic calls and texts?

3,620 2,238 March 17, 2014 at 11:21 AM in Question (3)
Was thinking about giving my daughter a phone. We have no house phone, only cell phones. Was thinking about getting her one so if she is at the rink and done early, she could call me to come get her or something like that. Or call her friends around the block rather than using my phone?

Wondering what is an appropriate age. She is not overly mature, not immature either.

with that said, this kid would have no friends around who they could borrow a phone to call for that time? seems like a pretty big wasted expense for such use.

And you needed a whole pocket full of quarters? Come clean about it, momma's boy.

And why should the other parents have to supply phones so OP's kid doesn't need one? Roll

I have a pocketfull of quarters
And I'm headed to the arcade

I don't have alot of money
But I'm bringing everything I made

I have a calis on my finger
and my shoulder's hurtin', too

I'm gonna eat 'em all up
Just as soon as they turn blue

'Cause I got Pac Man Fever (Pac Man Fever)
It's drivin' me crazy (Drivin' me crazy)
I got Pac Man Fever (Pac Man Fever)
I'm goin' outta my mind (Goin' outta my mind)
I got Pac Man Fever (Pac Man Fever)
I'm goin' outta my mind (Goin' outta my mind)

[musical interlude - 4 measures]

I've got all the patterns down
Up to the ninth key

I've got Speedy on my tail
And I know it's either him or me

So I'm heading out the back
Going in and out the side

Gonna eat all the cherries up
And take 'em all for a ride

I got Pac Man Fever (Pac Man Fever)
It's drivin' me crazy (Drivin' me crazy)
I got Pac Man Fever (Pac Man Fever)
I'm goin' outta my mind (Goin' outta my mind)
I got Pac Man Fever (Pac Man Fever)
I'm goin' outta my mind (Goin' outta my mind)

[musical interlude - 2 measures]

I'm gonna faint to the left
Then move to the right
'Cause Pokey's too slow
And Blinky's outta sight

[instrumental break - 16 measures]

Now I've got them on the run
And I'm lookin' for the high score.

So it's once around the block
Then I stop back out the side door.
UHH!!
I'm really cookin' now
Eatin' everything in sight

All my money is gone
So I'll be back tommorrow night

'Cause I got Pac Man Fever (Pac Man Fever)
It's drivin' me crazy (Drivin' me crazy)
I got Pac Man Fever (Pac Man Fever)
I'm goin' outta my mind (Goin' outta my mind)

I got Pac Man Fever (Pac Man Fever)
Drivin' me
Drivin' me
Drivin' me crazy
Pac Man Fever (Pac Man Fever)
I'm goin' outta my mind (Goin' outta my mind)
Pac Man Fever (Pac Man Fever)
It's drivin' me crazy (Drivin' me crazy)
I got Pac Man Fever (Pac Man Fever)
I'm goin' outta my mind (Goin' outta my mind)
P-P-P-P-Pac Man Fever (Pac Man Fever)

Until they start realizing they can talk to sally all night long and now you have a much more expensive plan, or a kid getting constantly punished and their phone getting taken away - oh wait isn't that where they are right now?

When I was that age you didn't need to call home for a ride--you walked. Uphill. Both ways.

And you didn't need to call to say you would be home late. You knew when you had to be home and you got there on time. No excuses.

When parents needed to call their kids they just went out on the front porch and screamed their name a few times. You could tell by the tone if you were in real trouble and had to get home immediately or if you just needed to check in as soon as possible.

Nuh-uh, Jessica only said that because Sally wouldn't let her borrow her flat-iron, but that's because when Jessica borrowed Amanda's curling iron she got gum on it but she said she didn't and that the gum was already there so it really wasn't her fault and and and...

My mom rang a hand bell when it was time to come home for dinner.
