Is 9 1/2 too young for a phone for basic calls and texts?

3,620 2,238 March 17, 2014 at 11:21 AM in Question (3)
Was thinking about giving my daughter a phone. We have no house phone, only cell phones. Was thinking about getting her one so if she is at the rink and done early, she could call me to come get her or something like that. Or call her friends around the block rather than using my phone?

Wondering what is an appropriate age. She is not overly mature, not immature either.

Yeah, I was glad my kid wasn't interested in ice hockey - it's crazy expensive. It's too warm here for it to be all that popular, too.

I get when the kid is older, and they have practices that are hours long and frequent. I wouldn't want to stay for that, either. But now in elementary school, they're little, I can't see leaving them.
100% American. 100% think football is for pussies.

When I was a coach we eventually put strict rules into place about how practice is NOT daycare. We eventually got parent volunteers to rotate staying at practice and I was a total dick to people who left me waiting over an hour with their kid because they were late picking them up. Or the winners who would just drop their kids off at the track never looking to make sure an adult was there.

Thanx everyone for the legit responses. I think that I will. She will not go over minutes, she is responsible for that. She won't call or text much. Many relevant posts. When I was a kid, and I was done with practice, I could use the pay phone and collect call my mom, who in turn would not accept the charges but knew it was time to be picked up. Pay phones are a thing of the past, so in this day and age, cell phones are the only option. I work 35 minutes away, my mom didn't work. a lot of things are different now than when I was a kid. It was safe to leave the house first thing in the morning and not return until dinner. Not now! at least not where I live. I had a house phone when I was growing up, so if I wanted to call my friends, I did just that. I don't have a house phone at their disposal. If for some reason in the near future, I decide to leave her home on short stints, I would feel better knowing she could call "someone" It was not a question of whether or not a kid should have a cell phone, the question was whether or not 9 1/2 was too young for a simple trac phone type thing as a safety measure. She is at the ice rink a lot. There is no pay phone. Walking home 4 miles is a little too much to ask after 3 hours of skating IMHO. I will get the phone, call it the "house phone" that I can determine when and where she can take it. Smilie
Not an issue of too much to ask! Nine and 1/2 is too young to be walking anywhere - even with a friend and certainly not 4 miles. I'm sure you love your daughter so please keep her safe.

Man, if I hadn't been allowed to walk anywhere when I was 9.5 I would have had to stay home and get drunk in the basement instead of sneaking booze into the movie theater.

Come to think of it, yeah, please don't give your kids too much freedom. They don't always choose the best path. I know I didn't.

Whether it be phones, computers, friends or whatever, pay attention to what is going on in their lives. All of the above can have both positive and negative impacts on their lives. Teach them well.

Walking alone at 9 1/2...two words. Metro Detroit.

He is a correct Llama. I have had to drive kids home when their parents didn't show...and no one was there either. I have had parent's ask me to run practice longer because they had plans, "when is the game over? I am going shopping" and on and on. Not just practices, games that these kids were very proud of. Having a child cry, hug you and thank you for coaching...it makes dealing with the assholes worth it. It makes you sad for what they have at home.

A group of ten year olds that dump the water on your in celebration, as if it was gallons of Gatorade, that makes it worth it. Even if they did have to "trick me" into stooping down.

Just a thought --- buy a phone -- it will be yours -- and let her use it from time to time --- when she gets older she can have "HER OWN PHONE" - but for now maybe she can use yours- (one you buy for her but call it yours) And every one uses texts now a days - I do not call my kids ( they are all adults) we text - that is just the way it is now.

Huh

Are you like my stalker, or did you just read that one post?

If you are going to stalk me, I would be happy to send my schedule to make it easier. I do seem to have a recent opening based on the last couple days.
