Surprised nobody has mentioned Plex [plex.tv] yet. It has a "channel" for CBS, which is the one major network missing from Hulu. Plex's CBS channel pulls the streams from the CBS website, so you get them about a day after they air, and they don't have any commercials. There may be channels for the other networks as well, not sure. On top of that, you can stream all your own media (movies, TV shows, music, pictures, whatever) to your TV and mobile devices.

I have a Roku 3 with Hulu+ ($8 / mo), Amazon Prime (~$6.50 / mo), and Plex (one-time $5 for the app, or you can pay for PlexPass which gets you additional features). Combined with a digital HD antenna, we get ~90% of what we used to watch (wife liked to have HGTV on in the background, and we miss the Mythbusters). Sports are usually the toughest part of streaming, but all I watch is NFL so its on the major networks.

I used to stream through my Samsung blu-ray player, but wound up buying a Roku 3 and it was very worth it. The Roku 3 is so much faster and more responsive, and is updated much more often. If you have a blu-ray, smart TV, game console, etc you may want to give it a try through that device, but I'd plan on picking up a Roku / Apple TV / Amazon Fire eventually.

We just did this. I bought an antenna for the attic and got a TiVo. I'm in the marketfor a couple minis. We also have Netflix and Hulu once we get nterwebz Ina couple weeks. The new TiVo roamio rocks. Best DVR we've ever had.
The one nice thing about the DirecTV Tivo was the channel guide was included, but I see you have to take the 500 hit for lifetime or the 15/ month for the guide.

I see that as the only downside to the TiVo.

I think the TiVo interface>all other DVR's

I'm getting the Samsung S5 which links up my Samsung TV and the TV also has the apps. But would be nice with our Macbooks.

So many different choices, unlike cable...lol

look into Plex + chromecast/roku/appletv/etc.

We use Netflix for the most part. My parents had Directv, and when I moved out I didn't get cable. We do get some basic channels through our cable internet though.

To watch some other current shows, we have some Pirate friends.

It was supposed to be a hypothetical. You should at least give people the choice. Especially since you have three people on there listed twice. Harhar

I was just about to mention Plex.
We have never had cable in our house. Always been a free TV household, with an antenna in the attic. We get beautiful picture on all the broadcast channels, as well as some secondary channels like ION, QVC, and COZI and several others. Each broadcast channel has several sub channels. For example, 4-1 is NBC, 4-2 is COZI, 4-3 is new york city traffic cams. Over the air is the only way to get uncompressed video. You actually get a better picture than the majority of cable systems offer. If you dont already have a roof or attic antenna, I hear alot of good things about the Mohu leaf antennas. We have the antenna running to two Tivos, an HD and a Roamio, for recording purposes. The Tivos are networked with each other and the desktop computer for transferring shows back and forth. We also have a Roku 3 on one of the tvs. With WWE network, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Plex, and a bunch of channel apps like FOXnow, AMC, ESPN, etc. The only thing I see a charge for is the WWE network. Anything that I can't get through any of the channels and apps I have can be gotten, then either transferred to a Tivo, or served by plex.

Next time, wait to make it until you're not otherwise occupied.

I almost never go to movies. They're expensive, and no one ever wants to see the movies I want to see. But I'll add it to my list to download when it comes out on DVD, though. Wink

What, running? Seriously, that's boring to you?
