Formula 1 the 2015 edition ****Mercedes is suing their Senior Engineer**** (post 172)

Huh Scratchhead

Formula One racing's governing body, the FIA, has revealed details of a new Super Licence points system, making it harder for drivers to become eligible for F1 competition.

From 2016, drivers must have accumulated 40 points over a three-year period, with points allocation based on which other motorsport series they have participated in and the level of results they achieved.

Drivers will have also have to be at least 18-years old, have spent at least two years in junior single-seater categories, hold a valid road driver's licence and pass a test on the Formula One sporting regulations. The existing requirement of completing 300 kilometres in a recent F1 car also remains.

*snip*

If such a system had been in place ahead of 2015, new Toro Rosso signing Max Verstappen would be ineligible to race in F1 this year, having accrued just 20 points by finishing third in the 2014 FIA F3 European championship - the 17-year-old's only season of car racing to date.

Uneventful and expected race today. Except maybe for the little critter that almost got hit(what the hell was that?)

Edited to add: It's evidently a groundhog.

Here's video of it running out of the way of the cars. Yes this was the most interesting thing to happen in today's race.

not much drama up front, that's for sure. some things were under covered in the field, IMO.

Don't forget the couple of spins and light contact, all of which was more interesting than the ground hog

I did gasp at one of the spins but still found this to be one of the most uneventful races I've ever seen.

Cliff notes:

Car was "fighting driver" just before crash
Team failed to tell her how to stop in temp pit lane
She told engineers she could not operate the clutch when the steering wheel was at full-lock
De Villota thought she would miss the lorry, didn't see the tail-lift which was left at eye level
No charges filed because Marussia went into administration last year

Quote :
The car of former Formula 1 test driver Maria De Villota was "fighting" her moments before she crashed into a lorry, documents have revealed.

De Villota lost an eye [bbc.co.uk] at Duxford Airfield while testing for Marussia and died a year later, aged 33.

*snip*

Prior to the drive, the HSE documents said De Villota was sent instructions from the race engineer on the day, but they did not include anything about stopping the car or which gears should be selected when arriving in the temporary pit lane.

She then drove a saloon around the track, but the stopping procedure was again not explained to her.

After two successful runs in the F1 car, De Villota was returning to the marquee garage when her front wheels locked when braking.

As the gears were engaged and the car was fitted with engine idle control, designed to maintain revs at about 4,100 rpm to avoid damage, it was essentially "fighting" De Villota and she was "pushed" along the runway into the lorry, the report said.

De Villota pressed a button to unlock the clutch and disengage the gears before the crash, but nothing happened. A gear change from second to first was also rejected by the engine idle control, the documents added.

She had previously told engineers she could not operate the clutch when the steering wheel was at full-lock, which it was at the time of the crash.

The tail-lift had been left in a position which "not only created the risk of injury, but was also protruding outwards at the level of the DP's [deceased person's] eye", the investigation said.

When questioned afterwards, De Villota said she thought she would miss the lorry and did not see the tail-lift.

A year on from his greatest achievement (points at Monaco), Bianchi's father gave an interview warning that hope was fading. The news everyone feared arrived in the early hours of Saturday morning. Bianchi is the first driver to succumb to injuries sustained at a race since Ayrton Senna at Imola in 1994.

DH records the practice sessions but never watches them unless something unusual should happen. The story popped up on my F1 news feed yesterday while I was home, otherwise we would have missed it. It looked really scary, I'm glad he was ok.

it didn't look as bad as those crashes at the Fontana Indy race Bigeye those were some scary crashes, watching an open cockpit car go airborne and then spear into the ground lawn-dart style is never good shake head

Ouch! That looks painful, just searched for the video. We don't follow Indy racing or any other racing, just F1. DH just doesn't have the time with his job.

I've watched a lot more indy coverage this year than I have in a while. It's been a pretty good season, IMO. The new aero-packages have created ocntroversy, a bit of danger, and overall pretty good racing. I do wish they had a few propoer road courses instead of these street circuits where the views are limited by cameras peering between the rows of concrete barrier on either side. Still wish they'd bring a race to COTA, but the owner of Texas Speedway is completely against it Doh

F1 Crazy Crazy Crazy

I think that's probably the craziest race since the time the track flooded due to the amount of rain coming down, and they had to start/stop the race a bunch of times and had some crashes. IIRC it was Indonesia but can't recall the year.
