If they were going to throw, at least don't throw it into the middle. It was the riskiest play, when they had other options.
Would you have called that play if you were Carroll?
They waste a TO, swap out players... Try another run, and hinge everything on that? They had to pass on either 2nd or 3rd. It made the most sense to pass on 2nd, to save the TO for 3rd.

On another note, amazing play by Butler.

They had to throw at one point instead of putting their eggs all in one basket. Wilson didn't run because it looked like dude was open. Butler surprised him. Hindsight is 20/20.

They could have tried to run it once with their non-goal line running team. But the Pats had done a pretty good job of stopping Lynch when it was predictable he was going to be running it. That would have left them with only one other opportunity to run it in if it failed, since the clock doesn't stop (after the second attempt). They ultimately had two running chances with one of those not being with the right personnel to run it.
It's also foolish to not think about the future downs. If you don't strategize or think ahead, I'm pretty sure you're doing it wrong.

Well it's easy to play Monday Morning QB, in reality it doesn't matter much. Games over.

Out of all the options Hawks had, would you have chosen that play?

Good look at the hard count that led to the encroachment penalty.
Watching that it almost looks like Seattle is trying to get the Pats line to flinch and the one dufus loses his balance.
Without the sound you don't really get the effect of the hard count.

But you sure have strong opinion on why throwing to the middle was a good call. You just don't want to admit you would have chosen to run and the Hawks coaches totally messed up. From the ESPN poll, 80% of the people in New England area said Lynch could have scored; for rest of the country, over 90%.

And what do polls have to do with statistical evidence?
If they chose to run the ball, Lynch may have scored.
If Butler wasn't as perceptive, they would have scored a touch down.
If Lynch had turned on "Beast Mode" and not stopped at .5 yards from the end zone, it would have been a TD.
If ifs and ands were pots and pans...
