Exchanging gifts with in-store credit ?

1,160 604 July 5, 2016 at 08:07 PM
It's been a while since I last did this, so I wanted to confirm if stores like Walmart and Target still do this .. Can you exchange brand new retail stuff for instore credit at either Target or Walmart ? If yes, are there any requirements, conditions or limits that I need to meet ?

Also, I do not have the original receipt of the item I will be trying to exchange.

Yes, you can. Last summer we watched some guy return three (clearly shoplifted) $30+ razors without a receipt at Target and the cashier didn't even bat an eye.

First of all for anyone wondering, I'm not a shoplifter. Rather I'm just trying to flip some legally acquired items to money/credit.

Don't they have a store policy that they would like to see the receipt (even one from a different store) of the item being exchanged if its retail price is over $50 ?

I don't know the exact amount that requires a receipt at either store as I rarely return anything without a receipt over $10. If you show them a receipt from a different store, however, you are guaranteed to have them reject the return/exchange.

You do know that returning something to a store you didn't buy it at is fraud, right?

If that is the case, why do retailers allow exchanging gifts for instore credit ? The whole point of this service is that people can exchange unwanted gifts for something worthwhile.

They are referring to someone buying something at Walmart for $30 then trying to return it to Target where the price might be $50 and not give a receipt. It would also be fraud if you got said item at WM for $30 and then the price went up later then trying to return that item w/o a receipt for lets say $50. Both cases are return fraud.

Many stores offer gift exchange for an in-store credit as a courtesy/ convenience for shoppers. It is intended to be used for items that were purchased at that store. You cannot just return any brand new item to whatever store you want. It would need to be returned to the store it was purchased from and within whatever other return policy guidelines that store has (X days, X condition, etc.).

If you are just trying to find whatever store has the highest price for your return instead of the actual store it was purchased from, that is fraud.

I got that idea from the (even if from another store) line in your post.

They'd only accept their receipt and then, if you don't have a receipt, stores like Wal-Mart will only let you return three items per year without receipts, using your driver's license/id to keep tabs.

That's where gift receipts come in handy.

I don't know why this thread is going into fraud discussion, etc. My intentions aren't fraud related. I'll try to describe my issue once again below. If you guys think it's fraud then I won't do it.

I had a promotional credit with Dell which was about to expire soon. I wanted to use it up so I bought a couple of PS3 games which I thought I can either sell on eBay or flip them for money. Years ago I returned a gift at Walmart and told them it was an unwanted gift from someone. Since the item was brand new with its seal intact, they took it in and gave me in store credit equal to the MRRP of that item. I just wanted to do the same thing again now as it's easier to do than invest the time to sell of eBay, etc.

Yea, that would still be fraudulent intent. If you return it to Dell, then it would not. Walmart does not exist to convert your purchases from somewhere else into money for you.

Thanks for clarifying. Returning to Dell is not really a practical option as it's essentially undoing the whole thing, but even if I did that, what other options do I have in converting the promotional credit into money ?

Pretty much buying something on Dell and selling it for cash. What you suggested earlier is the definition of fraud and it's why places are getting much stricter when it comes to returns.

Buy it, sell it for what you can or buy something that you can actually use - or give it a friend as a birthday gift or whatever.

Try Amazon.com. They buy back many items whether you got them from there or not.
