Exchanging gifts with in-store credit ?

It's been a while since I last did this, so I wanted to confirm if stores like Walmart and Target still do this .. Can you exchange brand new retail stuff for instore credit at either Target or Walmart ? If yes, are there any requirements, conditions or limits that I need to meet ?
Also, I do not have the original receipt of the item I will be trying to exchange.

Don't they have a store policy that they would like to see the receipt (even one from a different store) of the item being exchanged if its retail price is over $50 ?

You do know that returning something to a store you didn't buy it at is fraud, right?

Many stores offer gift exchange for an in-store credit as a courtesy/ convenience for shoppers. It is intended to be used for items that were purchased at that store. You cannot just return any brand new item to whatever store you want. It would need to be returned to the store it was purchased from and within whatever other return policy guidelines that store has (X days, X condition, etc.).
If you are just trying to find whatever store has the highest price for your return instead of the actual store it was purchased from, that is fraud.
I got that idea from the (even if from another store) line in your post.
They'd only accept their receipt and then, if you don't have a receipt, stores like Wal-Mart will only let you return three items per year without receipts, using your driver's license/id to keep tabs.
That's where gift receipts come in handy.
I had a promotional credit with Dell which was about to expire soon. I wanted to use it up so I bought a couple of PS3 games which I thought I can either sell on eBay or flip them for money. Years ago I returned a gift at Walmart and told them it was an unwanted gift from someone. Since the item was brand new with its seal intact, they took it in and gave me in store credit equal to the MRRP of that item. I just wanted to do the same thing again now as it's easier to do than invest the time to sell of eBay, etc.

Buy it, sell it for what you can or buy something that you can actually use - or give it a friend as a birthday gift or whatever.
