Do you lock your luggage when staying in hotels?

Well DW and kids just left after a couple weeks vacay... I am staying behind to do some work. It just occurred to me.... DW locked her suitcase every time we left the room (one of those TSA locks) and I'm thinking.... what the hell is the maid service going to steal? Underwear? I leave electronics out all the time - laptops setup, phones charging, etc etc, and never have an issue. I have had change taken but that could have been a misunderstanding about tips.

Only thing I ever had stolen by housekeeping at a hotel/motel I was staying at was cigarettes back in the 90's when we were on a family trip to Wildwood, NJ. It was a fairly nice place maybe half a block from the ocean. I left them out on the table when we went out for a little bit, came back and they had magically walked off.

Oh well. If anything the staff helped me out by stealing the cancer sticks. Thankfully that was the only thing they stole.

Quote from Iaaaiws :
Stayed in a real beauty low-budget motel this past weekend.

The rooms themselves were actually quite nice. Although quite dated everything was clean and functional. Pretty much just a simple rustic decor with different touches like little knick-knacks and even some books on the desk.

The doors still open with a key but at least there was a high-tech security lock system in place once you were inside.

No silly GFCI outlets over the sink in this place. In order to survive in this place you need to utilize some basic common sense. No nanny-state watching out for the stupid here.

Staying there was like a trip back in time but for around $60 including taxes it got the job done. There were several of the typical chain-type places but at over twice the cost for just a night's stay it wouldn't have been worth it.

*edit* My only real complaint was that the only grounded outlet was behind the desk. I wanted to be able to plug my laptop in and put it on the table next to the bed but the only outlet there was a two-prong like the one in the bathroom picture. Annoyed
Shit man, looks like someone boosted your laptop and phone between pictures one and three. EEK!

the only time i've locked stuff up was when i was in a resort in jamaica, and even then, it was just passports and a few other things that would be a huge hassle if they were to be taken. other than that, i just leave stuff out and hang the DND.

i figure it's a self-preservation thing: if they steal anything of consequence, i'm going to know it as soon as i get back to the room and report it, and i'll make sure they get fired. the policy has served me well so far since i've yet to have anything stolen.

maybe i'm weird, but if i were cleaning rooms and went into one where it was obvious the person went to a lot of trouble to make sure they locked up their valuables, it would offend me a bit. not saying i'd do anything bad to them, but it would leave a bad taste in my mouth. leaving things out normally shows a level of trust in the cleaning person, and i'd appreciate that.

I travel about 30-40% for my job. Have been for about 5 years now. I have never locked my luggage. But, I also never leave anything of value in the room. It all goes in my backpack and I take it to the office with me. The only gadget I leave behind is my Kindle PW. I also put the Do not disturb sign on the door when traveling alone. I don't need them in there unless I am traveling with the wife and kids. They use a crapload of towels when they are there with me.
