Trader Joe's food review thread

31,436 2,810 August 24, 2008 at 07:09 PM in Grocery (3)
I've been trying out various food products from Trader Joe's. Thought a food review thread might be fun. Please do add your own reviews of Trader Joe's foods/products.

So far...

Trader Joe's Chocolate (Product of Belgium): Really nice and a good value too.

Shepard's Pie: This one was a huge disappointment. It was watery, almost like soup and had very little meat in it. Hubby couldn't even eat it. The pic makes it look so good, the reality was a shock.

Chicken Enchiladas in Salsa Verde: Very tasty, have had this one a couple of times. Not bad value either. Cheaper than TV dinners at other stores. *Note: The only pic I could find is not the best, it looks much nicer IRL on a plate.

Chicken and Chile Verde Burritos:
Not bad, would eat again but not as nice as the enchiladas. Would be nicer with a sauce on top.

Chicken and Gorgonzola with Lentils:
Not my thing, found the chicken a bit bland for me, although the lentils were nice.

Mandarin Orange Chicken: This one is very nice and pretty easy to fix. Just put a 1/4 cup of oil in a pan, brown the chicken and then dump in the sauce and serve over rice (sold separately). To make it a little healthier, I took the chicken out of the oil, patted it to remove the excess oil and then mixed in the sauce. You can also bake the chicken in the oven, the instructions are on the package, it's just been too hot to fire up the oven here. Just bought more today. It's enough for a family of four or you can just do half for 1 or 2 people, as it comes with two sauce packets.

Basically, it's become a culinary trend and suddenly it's everyone's favorite pepper. I blame it on Bobby Flay. LMAO

No offense BTW. Smilie

i had a long reply typed out but it didn't submit. IMO just sounds good as a pepper and people try it. if you had your choice of all peppers people would think that'd be good.

still think every trader joes client tries it at least once.
That's the problem. DH tried the 2 buck chuck once, didn't like it and gave up on TJ's wines. Also, World Market has better prices on their wines, excluding the 2 buck chuck.

I love the Tabasco brand chipotle sauce. It gives a smoky heat to a tuna fish sammich. I just mix it into the tuna along with, mayo, a dash of lemon juice and some hard boiled egg. yummy

None taken.

That hummus is the only chipotle thing I've tried. I don't really care for peppers or spicy foods.

I use it as a base on occasion for a veggie pizza instead of pizza sauce laugh out loud

Otherwise roasted garlic hummus is the only one I use as an actual dip nod

If you like the flavor of masala, try the TJ's Masala Lentil Dip. I use it like I do hummus, spread it on flat bread with some mache (or sprouts) and sliced cucumber and a little tzatziki sauce. Tasty!

They were doing samples of the Nature's Path Pumpkin Flax Granola, it's very tasty. I bought a box of it for $2.99. I've seen the Nature's Path bars at the grocery store before and IIRC, they're pretty pricy, so this was a good deal. woot

They have a ton of new stuff. Saw the chocolate covered chips but didn't buy any. They also have an asian style "shrimp corndog" which is bascily a tempura battered shrimp on a stick with some asian flavored sauce to dip it in. Was temped to get that one but was hoping some other SDer would try it first and report in. There were also some chicken manitas that looked very tasty. Lots of other stuff too but these are the only ones I remember.

Supposedly, there will be a Trader Joe's opening in Plano, TX not even a minute away from a Whole Foods, Tom Thumb, and another grocery store. I wonder how that's going to work out.

Wow, they're opening a bunch of TJ's in the DFW area, as well as a lot of other places. The one on Lower Greenville will probably be close to the Whole Foods that is down there. I wonder how close Aggie Mom is to The Woodlands? Scratchchin

Doh A week or so ago, they were doing tastings of the wild mushroom and black truffle flatbread with mozzarella, it's in the frozen foods section. It was very tasty but I forgot to post about it when I got home. Just realized this when I got one out for a late lunch. It would also be nice (cut into smaller pieces) as an appetizer. They had a couple of other flatbreads but I don't recall what was on them.

I've changed my mind about the Spicy Shrimp Bao, that I had posted about previously. On a second try, they just didn't taste that great. Maybe they would be better by themselves, instead of with other Chinese dim sum but we're both off them now so won't be having them again. Sick

Finally tried the Spicy Shrimp Bao [traderjoes.com] that I bought a while back. They're had really good Thai flavors and were very tasty. They went well with some of the TJ's sweet chili sauce but were good without the dipping sauce too.

Tried the new TJ's dark chocolate, butter cream filled bars today. Meh, not my thing but then I'm very picky when it comes to chocolate. This may not be new but I hadn't noticed it before. They had a chocolate covered soft peanut brittle that looked pretty good. It's with the cookies and stuff over the frozen food cases.

They were giving out samples of a mini turkey meatball with the primavera sauce over it and it was very tasty. They must have done something different to their turkey meatballs as they weren't nice at all when they first started selling them two or three years ago. Now they have a nice flavor and texture to them.

I tried the new gluten free chocolate chip cookies, they were great, but then I got super sick from them. There is no info about shared equipment or anything....If you are celiac or super sensitive, don't eat them!

Just tried the reduced guilt Chicken Breasts in Poblano Sauce with barley and sweet white corn risotto tv dinner. The chicken had a weird, stringy/spongy texture to it and the flavors were not nice. Couldn't eat it. Sick

I gotta say I can't eat other brand string cheese because TJ beats em all. I didn't have a chance to go and bought some other brand at the grocery and it's not as good. Frown But I don't want to waste a whole pack so I must suffer. Sadwalk
