What would you do with $1,000+? *Moderate OT allowed*

12,150 1,493 October 25, 2016 at 09:25 AM in Question
Wife and I have our own spending accounts, basically we can use it for anything we want within reason. Mine is getting fairly robust at over $1k. Any advice on what to use it on? I'm thinking about buying a car on CL and trying to flip it, see how high I can grow my fund.

Any ideas?

We will probably head over to England again next year, the Brexit has caused the Pound and the Euro to plummet against the dollar so it's a good time to go.

Easy flip is guns, every election year they jump up prices fast. Get them now before election. During 2012 election ARs went from ~$600 to >$1,000 for just a basic starter.

Thought about that but I think I'd rather not.

The last time I had over 1k saved, I helped my mother out.

She promised to repay it, of course I never expected her to and she hasn't been able, but I knew that going in. She is my mother and that is that. Smilie

Judging from the depreciation values so far, wait a year and you can probably buy a low mileage one owner 2013 Dodge Dart for a grand. Mad

Good thing I'm keeping mine. Whee

Comfort

DH wants to get a new car. I keep telling him we can't afford it but it's hard to distract him every time a flashy new sports car whizzes by our Subaru. Annoyed

What's on your bucket list? Anything you've ever wanted to do but just thought it was too frivolous? Like dinner at a crazy expensive restaurant? Rent a exotic sports car, take a helicopter tour, take some friends on a limo ride to look at Christmas lights with champagne and nibbles, buy your wife a nice piece of jewelry. Or be philanthropic and donate it to a needy family - maybe someone who's lost their home to fire, or toys for homeless shelter. Think outside of the norm!

We make a point not to wear anything that would make us stand out as Americans, not for any religious reason but simply because most Americans tend to be easy targets for pick pockets, so the thieves target Americans first.

Some great ideas, thank you! I hadn't thought about renting a sports car, might consider that in the Spring.

I have been saving it, but the question is....saving towards what goal?

I'm guessing you've already funded some sort of retirement plan?

Yes I have. Could always be more, but this $$ is what helps keep me sane.
