A and i talked about getting back together yesterday. he says he's not sure. i told him i see us going down a road where i know i'll end up hurt in the end, and i dont want that. he said he doesnt want to hurt me and doesnt want to be hurt. last time i wanted to get back together with him (which was about a year ago) he denied me and it broke my heart.

My advice, for what it is worth, is that you need to put yourself out there and try to find someone better. Look for someone better from the start, and maybe in better places that you have before. Don't settle and don't go back to where you've been and it didn't go very well. You broke up for reasons and you're allowing your desire to have someone, anyone, in your life cloud your judgement and forget the reasons why he wasn't right for you.
Often times we need to find ourselves and be okay with ourselves in order for others to find us and/or be attracted to us. Clinging, needy, and desperate aren't qualities most people, female or male, are looking for. I'm not saying you are those things, but it's often when we stop looking and try to be happy in our own lives the way that they are that someone great comes out of no where and enters our lives.
Good luck and try to stay positive.

the more i look the more i realize that A may not be my idea of a perfect man, but he's a good one. he tries to make me happy. he loves me more than anything. he doesnt and hasnt dated anyone for years becuase all he wants is me. he has issues as to why he wont just jump in and be with me. whatever those are, he's a guy and hasnt jumped in and told me about them.
it's not that i dont want to take this path. i'm just scared i'll end up hurt. nobody likes a broken heart, so i tend to push people away and just not get attached to keep myself from getting hurt in the end.
Opening up and letting someone into your heart is easier said than done. So if you are in the midst of a budding relationship, cut yourself some slack. Don't be so hard on yourself, worrying about what you're doing right and what you may be doing wrong. Just be you! That is the only thing that matters. Sure, you can be totally flirtatious, but if you're not feeling like batting your eyelashes, then don't. Be genuine and act the way you feel. It's very unwise to play a role.

This isn't what you want to hear, but I think you should move on and look for a better class of guys in a higher class of places than you have in the past and while no one like to be hurt you can pass up some amazing opportunities and people by not taking chances.
In the end, you will do what you want to do no matter what any of us say. I just hope that you're open enough to consider the advice of us that have been there before and learned a few things through our pasts. I've never been happy about the being hurt part of past relationships, but I don't regret any of them and learned from them all. As for "perfect," you will never find a perfect person and the sooner you give up that notion the sooner you will find happiness in someone that's good, decent, and caring. We all have our flaws.
One last piece of advice - every relationship takes effort, work, and foregiveness.
The people I know that think otherwise never find it and are seldom happy with anyone for very long.
