Have you ever had issues with Enterprise Rent a Car adding unexpected fees?

We rented a car a couple of weeks back. (this was due to someone backing into the door of my wife's car) I was quoted one price for adding insurance, then the fellow at the counter pushed over a paper and said, "sign here, initial here, here and here", and we'll get you your car. I had my youngest son with me at the time, and he kept asking me questions and such, plus it took about twice as long as normal because they tried to give us a car with a VERY smoky smelling interior at first. Anyway, we dropped the car off at the car repair place like Enterprise's Employee instructed us to, and later we get a call telling us that we owe something like $430 "as of today". I couldn't figure this out at first, and then realized that because my wife lost the credit cards out of her purse again, we had to cancel all of the cards and get them replaced. Evidently Enterprise hadn't been able to charge it to us.

I looked over the paper, and the $16.99 a day for the insurance had magically changed to $18.99. Plus, the 3 places where I had initialed evidently added on extra fees of $3 per day, $5 per day, etc. that no one had ever discussed with me. This will teach me to try to take the time to read things over, even when I'm being distracted. Why would a business do this sort of thing, knowing that it would lead to bad word of mouth advertising and loss of return business? Evidently I was quite naive, because I thought they had to actually discuss additional fees with me before they could try to add any. Still, it's my fault I guess, because they did get me to initial them.

Have any of you folks ever had things like this added on, or prices changed from what they told you?

I've never had this happen, but I make it clear I am not accepted ANY other charges - no prepay fuel, NO insurance, etc. I don't imagine they make any/much money renting a car for around $20/day...but I know they make a killing on the insurance/waivers/etc.

The only exception I've ever made was last trip, I paid to have them process the tolls, so I think I paid a few dollars for that convenience (plus the actual toll cost).

Many companies will do it and just say you agreed.

I have not. In contrary, the enterprise store nearby my house is staffed with super friendly and honest people. I have been renting cars occasionally from them for years without a single problem. One time they were nice enough to give me 1/3 of gas to compensate the long waiting. (there were two customers before me)

Nope, never.

They always ask me "do you want insurance?"
Me: "Nope"
"But you need to pay your deductible if you get into accident, whereas here for only $20/day you don't have to pay your $xxx deductible"
"Nope"
"OK, initial here, here and here saying you decline coverage"

I also try to read what I sign Wink That $430 and counting is approaching some people's deductible limits. The difference with the Enterprise insurance is that you pay for it no matter if you get into an accident or not.

That's what Trump said today when he announced his new immigration policy.
