3rd Annual SD Secret Santa ~ Reveal Who You Had Now!

26,039 1,610 November 3, 2008 at 09:36 AM in Chat (5)

*3rd Annual Slickdeals*

*How It Works*
It's Christmas time! Well, almost! Since the Secret Santa Gift Exchange went over so well last year, we're going to give it another go this holiday season. In case you don't know, this is how the Secret Santa Gift Exchange here at SD works: first, participants sign up and fill out a questionnaire. The questionnaire will be composed of questions that will help the Secret Santas buy a gift that their partner will like! When the sign up period is over, partners will be randomly drawn, and gifts will be purchased and shipped by the Secret Santas. You'll want to keep your identity a secret until all the participants have received their gifts. At the end, we will share pictures of our gifts and the partners will be revealed.

*Rules/Important Information*
1. You must have a join date of May 9th, 2008 or earlier, AND a minimum of 1,000 posts to participate.
In other words, you need to have been a member of Slickdeals for at least 6 months. This gift exchange is meant to be a fun way to celebrate the holiday season with the friends we have made on this board. Unfortunately, a limit does have to be set that determines who should and should not be allowed to participate. This rule is not in place to be "mean" or exclude any specific members. If you don't make the cut this year, stick around and post some more! You will get to know us and we'll get to know you, so when next year's SS rolls around you'll have even more fun participating!
2. You must not share your partner's address with anyone else.
The only two people who will ever see your full name and address will be myself and your partner. Under no circumstances are you to share that private information with any other user.
3. The spending limit for this year's Secret Santa is $20.
This is a reasonable amount to spend on a gift. Shipping costs don't count toward the limit.
4. When you're ready to ship your gift, make sure you buy delivery confirmation.
This will serve as proof that you actually did ship your gift to your partner!
5. You must sign up by Sunday, November 9th.
Shortly after the sign ups are closed, you will receive a PM with your partner's information.
6. You must ship your gift by Monday, December 8th.
This will allow four weeks for you to shop for and send out your gift. I will make posts several times throughout the month to remind you how many days left you have to ship. The sooner you get it out, the better!

*How to Participate*
WAIT! Before you sign up, please read this! It's very important that you realize once you commit to participating, you must follow through and send out your gift. The dates posted are a reasonable time frame for you to purchase and ship your present. If you need to withdraw from the exchange, please let me know as soon as possible, preferably before partners are chosen.

Now, if you understand the aforementioned information and you are ready to sign up, here's what you do:

1. PM afusinatto your full name and address.
You MUST PM me this information before I will add you to the list of participants. Be assured that your name and address will be kept private and will only be shared with your partner.
2. Make a new post in this thread with your repsonses to the questionnaire, which can be found in the wikipost.
Your partner will use your questionnaire when it comes time for him or her to shop for your gift. There will be a link to your questionnaire post in the wikipost. Feel free to edit it as you come up with new ideas!

3. Shop for a gift for your partner.
Shortly after the November 9th sign up cut-off date, you will receive a PM with the name of the person you will be shopping for. Use that person's questionnaire for ideas on what to buy him or her.
4. Ship out your partner's gift.
You have until December 8th to send out your gift. That's an entire month to find something, so no excuses! It's very important you send out by December 8th so your partner will receive it before Christmas!
4. PM afusinatto when you receive your gift.
While you are busy being somebody else's Secret Santa, remember that you will be receiving a gift from your own Secret Santa, too! When your gift arrives, PM me and let me know. You can either open your gift right away, or wait until later to do it. If you can remember, TAKE PICTURES and post them so we can all see what your Secret Santa sent you!

i never really saw it, but all she could talk about was this stuff that someone fed her when they visited her.
which does? dashi is a clear stock made of freshly shaved katsuobushi (dried, smoked mold-cured bonito) and knobu, a type of kelp.

miso is what you get with your meal at japanese restaurants

then its probably a miso variant.... dashi is generally used as a soup base... it could be they used dashi and added stuffs to it.... i use dashi to cook:

4 cups steamed Japanese rice
1 pound thinly sliced beef
1 onion
1 1/3 cups dashi soup
5 tbsps soy sauce
3 tbsps mirin
2 tbsps sugar
1 tsp sake

*benishoga (red ginger) for topping
PREPARATION:
Cook Japanese rice. Slice onion thinly. Cut beef into bite-sized pieces. Put dashi, soysauce, sugar, mirin, and sake in a pan. Add onion slices in the pot and simmer for a few minutes. Add beef in the pan and simmer for a few minutes. Serve hot steamed rice in a deep rice bowl. Put the beef topping on the top of rice.

k well tell him you want it sliced to the thickness of thickly cut lunch meat (sorta like bologna thickness but a tad thiner) and you want the pieces to be about 1 inch by 4 inches.....

also you probably need to buy mirin if you are going to make the gyudon

i think he would use the slicer for that, and trim it to size with a knife. I'm not sure, he handles the cutting of the meat, I handle the cooking Smilie

LOL, ok, I was wondering. We have already had 2 or 3 people with about 60 posts come in and go "where do i sign up?" Or "How do i get in on this?" so it seemed perfectly possible you were actually wondering Smilie

and now you're copyin' da interwebz for a sukiyaki/gyudon recipe? LMAO

i can't stand putting it over rice (i hate all don recipes with the exception of oyakodon)...it's gotta be on the side. as for the beef, most butchers will know what you want when you ask for "sukiyaki" beef.

that's a newb recipe...go look up an authentic nabemono recipe with negi, shiitake, horenso, harusame, tofu, etc.
