Next year?!? You are giving Nintendo (and their customers) way too much credit.

Yeah, i'm not a fan of the lack of touchpads either, it's been a godsend navigating desktop mode on my OLED Steam Deck and insanely useful for mapping buttons and macros on for certain games

What I needed is the steam deck's efficiency, with the screen and controllers of the Go, and the body color and touch response of the Ally...

I ended up just getting the chunky Go. Best Buy also has some great open box deals for it.

Nintendo's been around a long time. They fill a niche market and don't see their consoles at a loss during initial release. Don't want their product, don't buy it. If it weren't for Nintendo gaming today might be a lot different. First they brought the gaming market back from the Abyss with the Famicon / NES and they served as a major motivating factor when they spurned Sony when they were looking to collaborate on the Super NES CD-ROM.

But Nintendo will end up selling 150M units while Asus will be happy selling a couple of mils

But the gyro aiming is fantastic and a way better option than touch controls. The only time I think touchpads might be helpful is for the desktop, but since the Ally automatically switches control modes quite accurately, I have no problem navigating the desktop via thumbstick and touchscreen. All of these devices are amazing, IMO, and I've been gaming way more since I got my Ally. I sit at a desk all day, and I never want to sit at my gaming pc desk.

If you watch a lot of Steam Deck videos many of the players use the touchpads on FPS and TPS (3rd person) games however I have never thought that felt natural (or even bordered on playable to me). Gyro on the other hand is a gamechanger. The Nintendo Switch had gyro built into some games but most sadly lacked it on a majority of them. Made it really hit and miss for me. At this point I can't stand playing a FPS on the Xbox / Switch / PS4-5 at this point because of the lack of universal gyro support. Even OLD OLD OLD games with the Steam Deck gyro aim is just a single toggle setting away.

Admittedly I have no experience with the Ally but these open box prices are really tempting. Glad to know the Ally seems to have good gyro support. I still might be disappointed with the lack of touch pads for Windows though.

I snagged an openbox one from bestbuy for ~$300. I was debating returning it but after some time tinkering and setting things up I'll prolly keep it. It's an amazing device for that price. Was sold as "good" condition but was mint and came with the box and everything. I'd recommend inspecting before you leave bestbuy with any openbox purchase.

I was really leaning toward an odin 2 pro for battery life and portability but with less horsepower. We'll see how fun the ally is lugging it on a plane and conserving battery life.

For those whose had both a SD and other handheld, how critical are the touchpads? I'm planning to just play controller friendly games and then dock for anything needing a KBM
