Guess they are finally valuing their service quality at zero dollars!! Having unfortunate experience of being a sprint customer, I wholeheartedly concur with the valuation of their service.

Hi! I have ten specific questions that only pertain to my individual circumstances. I epitomize laziness and my sense of entitlement is impervious to reason. Therefore it is the responsibility of anyone and everyone who reads this to find the answers to my questions.

Personally I would call it a toss-up. I would not be surprised either way. I think it may still end up May 31 but am not sure enough to count on it.

We may get informal indications pretty soon but those have sometimes been wrong in the past.

T-Mobile to Buy Sprint for $26.5 Billion
Quote :
The two carriers have complementary wireless spectrum that may be a strategic advantage as the companies build a faster fifth generation or 5G network. T-Mobile controls a large portfolio of lower-band airwaves that can travel long distances and pass through walls and windows. Sprint has the largest U.S. holding of higher-band, 2.5 gigahertz spectrum that can handle more data capacity but over limited distances.

As I said before:
"This purpose of this free deal was to build up the Sprint subscriber base to use for leverage in a merger situation. Now that the merger will be tentatively finalized in a couple of days there wont be any more incentive for Sprint to keep this free 1 year deal alive."

Previous deadlines were kept rolling because the merger was in the works and was not tentatively finalized as it is now.
It may close tomorrow or 5/31/2018 but I would not count on the 5/31 as of now.
So if you can do it today or tomorrow.... do it!

Given the current regulatory environment of the Trump administration this merger will be approved, but in the slim chance that it is not one can speculate that this deal may return sometime in the distant future.

I beg to differ, somewhat. If Sprint's capacity is 50 million and they have 40 million subscribers, it doesn't cost them much to add 10 million new subscribers. The only cost is additional customer service, not new equipment.

Couple that with a more or less mature market, the only way to get new customers is to steal them, and hope they'll stay on. A certain number will, just like a certain number of people never send in rebate forms they're eligible for.

To my mind the merger is tangential, not the direct reason.

T-Mobile to Buy Sprint for $26.5 Billion
Also wondering. Will Tello survive?

Does T-Mobile have an obligation to continue all of these free one year Sprint plans? We aren't in contracts, right?

No idea what will happen with tello and the myriad of mvno's but Common Sense dictates they would not cut off our BYOD plans short. it would be foolish and rather than having some stick around they would almost definitely ensure that most would leave.
I am not even convinced that this Administration would consider the merger a good thing for America or Americans.
they are both foreign entities (Sprint and T-Mobile). A great many American jobs are stake. Why approve the merger?
Time will tell.
Also if approved, it will take a long while to get the nuts and bolts of the merger together. Maybe after 5/19

that's why I linked to prepaidnews, it's hard to tell but I'd guess the successful ones would stick around. I don't doubt merger would be approved if they are big cheeto donors. I don't trust this admin to look out for our interests.

To my mind the merger is tangential, not the direct reason.

What every one who got on in this deal benefited from is a decision by Sprint to spend their marketing dollars to acquire new customers the traditional way, tv/print/etc. ads, or just give those marketing dollars to the customers directly by providing the service for a limited time for almost free hoping that a certain % of these new customers will be retained.

Five years ago Sprint's cost to acquire a new customer was $315 and it must be more than that today.
https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/225415

So say the current customer acquisition cost is $360 or $30/mo, but Sprint's marginal cost to carry a new customer on its network is minimal at $5-$10/mo, then it makes perfect sense to have an almost free service offer.

Customer acquisition and retention costs have been studied to death in every industry and Sprint certainly has their internal data to justify this free offer.
But the problem with Sprint was that it was losing substantial numbers of customers and money and needed to boost its customer base to succeed in appearing attractive to a merger partner. It could not keep losing customers and money forever.
So this free offer was a quick way to stop customer #s losses to help with a merger goal.

This strategy is ok with remaining in the same technological base of 4G/LTE but it is not ok if Sprint has to advance its network to the next level of 5G where tens of billions will be needed to transition to.

Now, with the combined Sprint and T-mobile 5G spectrum frequencies and combined economies of scale it will help make the merged company a pretty good competitor to Verizon and AT&T and that may help keep 5G cell services prices more reasonable than would be the case with 2 strong players and 2 weak ones.
Also, remember that nothing working with 4G today will be compatible with 5G.
So keep that in mind when you spend a lot of $$$ on an Apple or Samsung, etc., device that'll be obsolete in a couple of years.

Sprint promised one year free very explicitly and we are paying for it. That makes a binding legal contract in my opinion. The "new TMo" company will assume all contracts of the two older companies. This is not an assets-only takeover.

Also the FCC and other agencies will make it a condition of approval that all existing contracts and promises be honored (a prepaid or month to month contract is still a contract in the legal sense). In fact the companies will volunteer that up front to make everything look ready to approve.

As to Tello, again they will make it look like all roses up front to get regulatory approval. A year or two later might be a different story. But Tello, and Mint on the TMO side, are probably looked at as assets. Do you think they are going to throw away those subscribers to the competition casually? They might increase their costs though down the road which might make them less viable. Indeed, the free plan may already be a bid for the same customers. Also even TMO may view it as a worthwhile experiment.

Nice Amoled display. I prefer the 16*9 display. Awaiting Sprint sim. No heat issues yet. I don't game though. Did anyone else partake?
It's a nice phone at that price point (but I didn't get it from the recent deal since I already had one). I'd still suggest babying the battery a bit on that phone model to be on the safe side though (ideally, charge to only ~80% except when more is really needed, try not to leave connected to charger overnight, try not to charge when the device is hot, etc, and keep track of battery wear and usage with an app like accubattery).

Different scenario. Open ended plans vs. BYOD with specific end date
